Socialism is taking my generation by storm. But just like a hurricane, socialism didn’t gain traction overnight.
It’s important to look at the typical millennial trajectory, and why unprecedented government intervention into our daily lives is now widely seen as the only solution to the problems that bedevil us as a generation.
Millennials grew up in an age of college-prep academics, where the only choice was to go to a college or university. We took this journey on the faith that a college education would give us the necessary skills to kick-start our careers.

In other words you blame everyone else for not thinking through the relationship between your education, your career choice and the employment market when you graduate.
Major: Yale, French lit. Job: barista.

Average professor stays in the job maybe 30 years -- and how many of his replacements will he have trained in that time, only one of which will get his job?

I think it was infiltrators from the Franklin School that have infested our Teacher's Colleges, churning out elementary teachers for public schools who trained children to work in groups for a communal grade, always downplaying exceptionalism in favor of getting along and participation trophies.
There's time for a lot of indoctrination from pre-pre-K through university.

Bullet point explanation for millennials..
I entered college at age 26
I had NO student loans
I had saved and I worked full time summers and part time in school
My class time was 33 hours a week plus labs for YEARS.
My education was Math, Physics and Engineering, Not the impact of western ideology on the structure and culture of Pakistan.
So Bernie and Fauxcahontas and Roberto O'Rourquez and Pete Buttgig want to wipe your student loans? Not while I'm voting.

Socialism is not helping people pay for their life choices. It's the government taking control of vast segments of society. You may be forced into a profession you hate - but it will be paid for - with your life.

I didnt go to college. They all said I should in High School, but I had no idea how to do it and didnt want to burden my parents with the expense. Besides, everyone coming back from college to visit only talked about what a huge party it was and all the coeds they seduced. Thats not what I wanted.
So I joined the military, got married and had some kids. Never did go to college. Never had the time. Too busy with real life.
Now I'm old. Kids are grown and gone. Its just me and Mrs. C. Income is pretty good and expenses are pretty low. I dont owe anyone anything and nobody owes me. Life is pretty good. And I still dont care about college.

FTA:"Many of us are eternally disappointed with the unjust system that blocked us from doing things past generations did, like get married, have kids and have a lovely oak-shaded, picket-fence life. "
I call BS. These whiners expect WAY too much. I counldn't afford a new car until I was 35, and I earned TWO engineering degrees, a BSME and a Master's in Engineering. I lived in a shabby, concrete block apartment in WVa, a state I found I had little in common with very quickly. drove a 15 year old VW, the same car I had in grad school. I had paid ALL my college costs as they occurred by working several jobs while going to school and working all of every summer. Only until I had been in the work force for a decade could I afford to buy a home and a new car. And I SPECIFICALLY avoided living in expensive coastal cities because it was clear that they were economically even LESS tenable than KC area, with super expensive housing and not much increase in pay scale. I lived in the dorms until I could find a shared dirt cheap apartment which cost LESS when split 4 ways. I bought a 12" TV and used it for the first 10 years of my employment, and mostly drove old, worn cars that I fixed myself until I was 35 years old.
Stupid choices in education, and running up expensive car and living expenses in college is a lot of it. Live like a pauper when you ARE a pauper. And don't expect to dig out financially in the first few years. Expecting your parent's lifestyle early on, which they attained after 20-30 years of hard work and saving as a TEAM of two, is unrealistic as hell.

Did five years of college during an eight year period. Graduated owing $400. Did not get any money from my parents (they were living in poverty) but they did provide a roof over my head, and fed me. I helped where I could. I lived with my parents until I graduated from college at age 25. I worked part time and full time much of that time. Family is important at this time in a child's life since they are still developing life skills. Once you land a job, you help pay their bills.
As for college, pick a school that is AFFORDABLE. Find ways to save money during your college years. Living at home is cheaper. Pick a major that will LAND YOU A JOB. Do not spend $100k a year for college. That is a ripoff. You want to go that route? Land a decent job, save your money, and go back when you can afford it.
Do not go into debt.
As for the government paying off college debt, I disagree. Don't reward the colleges. Don't reward people who go into debt and make bad choices.

It's an interesting article. I'll bet that Big Data has compiled some interesting comparison demographics between 2016 and this election cycle. There's a big difference between the kids of yesterday demanding the government provides them with free phones to the social justice warriors of today demanding free life.

I have been very impressed by the posters who have been through what I have been through. I have been less than impressed by anybody whose parents PAID FOR their maleduction. or they expect "The Government" to pay for their maleducation. Not while I get to vote.

I do empathize with those who made unwise choices, but I don’t think it is fair to have taxpayers pay the price and leave those who struggled to stay debt free looking like the dumb ones.
I told my kids to pick their major carefully. If they chose easy or fun majors with no job at the end, they needed to be prepared to live on a bed bath and beyond salary. They opted for engineering.

Same here #6. I inherited a little stock in a struggling business and built it up so I could comfortably retire. I never went to college. I wish I had taken some accounting courses which would have helped but I just worked hard and figured it out. If I could give some advice to kids not really suited for college I would say learn a trade then start your own business. My plumber has more money than I do and I am a millionaire.

These kids grew up thinking the crap they saw on TV and movies of people living wonderful stress-free lives with annual Swiss ski-trips and weekly suburban wine and cheese parties was real. The only thing that was needed was a sheepskin from a blue-blood university, never mind the debt and unemployable degree.
