Like death and taxes, obesity research and dietary advice are both unavoidable and to be avoided at all costs.
Tamar Haspel of the Washington Post became fully convinced last month by a new study that says we know highly processed food makes us fat. (She's not alone.) Others argue that it's not just processed food but cheap processed food that makes us fat. Still others are equally convinced now that genes and molecular stuff make us fat. Or maybe it just boils down to our gut bacteria.
Elsewhere, new research suggests empowering America's youth could be the key to stopping obesity in its tracks. But why stop there? Could empowering cats

In engineering classes, they introduced the concept of "control volume". A control volume is an imaginary boundary around an object or collection of objects. If you account for all "items of interest" passing in or out of the control volume, you will know how much of that "item of interest" is inside the control volume.
Draw a control volume around your body. All calories going in are accounted for and all calories going out (as waste heat and feces) are also accounted for. The difference is the number of calories, net, that go into your body every day. If it is a net positive number......you WILL get fatter. If it is a net negative number, you will lose weight.
Just that simple. It always has been, always will be. To lose weight you either increase the number of calories leaving the control volume (exercise is pretty much it) or you decrease the number of calories going into the control volume (eat less calories, either change food calorie density (salads, and such) or change food volume).
No other tricks, no other ways around it.

There's no secret. People that eat more than they need to will become fat.

The human body is a bucket. It can only gain weight equivalent to what is put in it. You do not become obese by osmosis. I can testify that the fat/obese people of my acquaintance ALL eat twice to 3 times as much at a sitting as I do. Breaking the consumption habit and establishing the exercise habit is very difficult but it is certainly possible.

It really isn't as simple as calories and exercise. Ask an endocrinologist. There are a number of factors involved that include the type of foods eaten, and a body's reaction to those foods and processing their components.

My idea is that Our climate controlled living environments are to blame. In winter people tend to eat heavier, denser food which used to be necessary to keep warm but never challenge their bodies because they live in a heated environment. In summer the converse occurs. Normally in hot weather people would eat lighter meals, but with the prevalence of AC they eat the same way as in winter. Couple this with a sedentary lifestyle and voila fat people. It does boil down to calories in, calories out. “Anyone who tells you differently is selling you something.”

A joke?
The NYC Mayor ( D-idiot) has already taken care of that. He removed salt from restaurant tables and limited the size of soft drinks sold in the city.

The simple answer is obese people have "gland" problems, they feed their glands too much.

Calories and carbs taken in. People should just eat to live not live to eat. A 300 pound person didn't get that way by accident it takes constant consumption of food calories to maintain that weight. Follow an obese person in a grocery store and watch what they purchase you'll find out how they maintain that weight.

Twenty years ago I was 220 pounds. Exercised every day and didn't lose more than a couple of pounds. Then I lost my job and didn't have money to buy enough food. If you want to lose weight, don't eat. After I got a job, I was up to 185 in a couple of months and stayed there.

Been there and done that many times over the years and just removed 35 pounds. I usually have to lose weight around 3 years and what I learned years ago was small bites to lose weight.

#4, no matter what sort of mumbo jumbo the endocrinilogists throw around. Eat less and you get skinnier.
All sorts of excuses are thrown around as to why people are fat......it is because they eat too much.
And life isn't fair. Give the identical diet to two people, and it is possible that one will lose on it and the other will gain. But, cut each down 15%, and whichever trend there is.....will shift downwards, 100% of the time.

Had to smile about eating more because the food tastes better. I did tend to lose weight when visiting the in-laws. This was ok for me, but I worried about the kids.

Back away from the twinkies.........
I watched a reality program briefly a few years ago. A young woman weighing something like 300+ pounds could not understand why she was so fat. The fact that she was filmed sitting down in the kitchen at 2AM to eat an "entire" layer cake and wash it down with a half gallon of milk completely escaped her. Another contestant weighed in at 600+ pounds. He was embarrassed that they had to cut his walls and remove him from his house in a forklift. He was put in a weightloss clinic with a specially made bed with hoist to get him in and out of it. He did nothing but complain about the food served and kept ordering in dozens of delivery pizzas.

I love all the experts here who know absolutely how overweight people can lose weight. You are all amazing and perfect. However, some of us aren't. There is a difference in all our bodies.` If 'diet and exercise' can cure obesity, then why not just tell alcoholics and drug addicts to stop buying the stuff. How simple is that. I expect snark from this comment but I've walked the walk. No one likes to be overweight for the simple reason all those who aren't love to shove it in our faces. One side comment, weight exploded in this country in the '70's, when corn syrup was added to everything. Then schools stopped recess and phys ed in schools. So sit millions of kids down, feed them corn syrup and don't let them exercise for the school day. Voila - the perfect storm.

I am just talking about my own increased weight. It's called the hand to mouth disease. I live in an area with restaurants on every corner. Good thing i don't eat fast food. People are also drinking gallons of soda. Want to know why someone is overweight, follow them to the grocery store. Watching TV all day does not help.

Always somebody has to get all cranky about "every body knowing the answers".
And yes, the answer for alcoholics is to STOP DRINKING. It really IS that simple.
People make bad choices, including me. But at least I realize where the blame lies....at that
guy in the mirror. No excuses.
