In The Case for Trump, Victor Davis Hanson, a classicist and military historian, brings his expert knowledge from years of academia to bear on his analysis of the political and sociological events that led to a Trump election. The Hoover Institute scholar doesn’t ignore Trump’s flaws or gloss over his failures, but he also doesn’t exaggerate them.
Hanson does not paint a black and white portrait of Trump, but uses a Machiavellian shade of gray to demonstrate that, despite his flaws, Trump is the one to get the job done. He likens Trump to Augustus, a renowned builder; to Julius Caesar bravely crossing the Rubicon;

Donald Trump is the type of person that doesn't mind pitching in to get work done. He is a "results" kind of person. Past presidents have been chosen to "look" presidential and look where that has gotten the United States. Kick everything down the road because they are afraid of getting their fingernails dirty, so to speak.

I read this book and while the author of this article “re-wrote” Hanson’s words, I didn’t agree with the theme of negativity she pursued in evaluating his message. All in all, read it for yourself and you will find that V.D.Hanson finds Trump to be a shakeup in the hallowed halls of Washington DC. He is what he is and so far, I can live with that and what President Trump is doing for this country to keep socialism and Marxism out of our Constitution.

Maybe I am simplistic, frustrated by watching the decline of this country, and uncouth enough to appreciate this President’s raw candor, I recognize authenticity and a love for this country and its citizens that cannot be faked. I see an imperfect individual, as we all are, bravely fighting a fight that no one dared to consider was a worthy effort until he came along to get in the ring with some of the most despicable, corrupt, liars that the world has ever seen. He has taken abuse no one should be expected to endure. Of course, he punches back. It’s the only way to survive when the media, academia, entertainment industry, political class of both parties, and Deep State are determined to destroy you. What these fools believed was a done deal regarding their transformation of this country has turned them into braying jackwagons when this outsider decided to challenge them and then beat them. Hillary was a shoe in and would receive the position she had coveted for decades while the Deep State would be running the show behind the scenes. Then along came Trump and threw a wrench into their done deal. How dare he?
He dared because he knew he knew the heart of the vast majority of Americans who were witnessing their beloved country destroyed by progressive dogma, corrupt politicians, and anti-American policies enacted by both parties. While the elites see the vast majority people who make this country work as rubes, hillbillies, and unsophisticated Deplorables, Donald J. Trump recognized as forgotten, disparaged, and unrepresented by the august ruling class. He speaks the language of the working class. He understands us, but most of all he appreciates us because he knows the contributions that are made by hard working Americans which is why we turn out in massive numbers to his rallies. They allow us to show our appreciation for everything he has done for the country. They are a covenant between the American people and this President; continue fighting for us and this great country and you will have our support. All the books and articles that are written regarding this man and his presidency can be boiled down to one concept. Donald J, Trump is a patriot who left a lifestyle we all would envy to fight the good fight. As long as he is willing to challenge the anti-American zealots who are trying to fundamentally transform this country, he is going to have a solid base and great success. Now more than ever, Trump 2020!

Thank you for a thoughtful post, #3. I wish I had written it, and I'm glad that I have read it. Maybe we should change our name from The Deplorables to The Simplistics.

Thanks for posting this long, detailed, but captivating account of VDH's take on one fine American president. Though I'm still reading the book, I'm forwarding this review to others.

This is a book review. Skurk’s take on Hanson’s book on Trump. Too many filters. I would rather read the book.
She remarks that Hanson goes not give his opinion of Trump when the entire book is his opinion, description, evaluation, whatever, of Donald J. Trump.
Ivory Tower Hanson has had a hard time coming over to PDJT but he finally made it. Not always wholeheartedly. Often with one foot dragging. Often with qualifying bits that he seems compelled to insert (even though they are negative remarks about PDJT’s apparel and hair - so trivial). As for PDJT’s not being a gentleman, I have not seen that. As his daughter once said, “He is blunt”… As someone else said “He fights”… He sees situations and persons as they are, which is unnerving for some. And he calls them as he sees them. He does not pick fights, but he does not take abuse. I have seen him to be almost courtly in his gentlemanliness. That is a great part of being the success that he is. He is a fine leader. Rather than making empty campaign promises to attract votes, he believed in what he said he wanted to do and he has fought hard - often against very strong foes - to keep those promises. He has brought us a long way back from the yawning abyss that Obama and those who came before him - including some Republicans - lead us toward.

#6, regarding "He fights" ----- This was the same thing Lincoln said about Grant when annoyed at panty-waists who criticized him.

Anyone who has been in the military, law enforcement, or public service will recognize the difference between President Trump and any democrat hopeful on the horizon.
President Trump is the kind of leader that takes the mission seriously, make it the priority, and will support his people in the accomplishment of the mission.
Hillary, and the other democrats, are the kind of leaders that look at the mission as an opportunity for their personal benefit- whether it be promotion, financial, or celebrity. They will throw their people under the bus if it benefits themselves.

A side note. I believe I read that Hanson has never met the President.

I noted that VDH still hasn't apologized to us for the absolute fury he had when we chose Trump as our nominee. We have put up with the mental snivels of these so called experts for over thirty years and we ignored them this time. We did darn well, and I hope we do even bigger and better with Trump next year. So until we hear as a nation acknowledgement that we are not the stupid, bumbling rubes that NRO, etc thinks we all are, I will still not give VDH any of my time.

FTA: "Everyone recognized that a Trump presidency would demolish the American political establishment’s norms."
And this is the crux of the entire "L'Affaire Trump". The current norms of the American political establishment, right and left, Democrat and Republican, is corruption. It is all that simple. Never waste a crisis...the money will flow like water into many. many pockets. From drugs to abortion to immigration to guns to education, the "doing our best" money trail is the thing no one really wants to follow. Trump is a disrupter, threatening all the rice pots, creating chaotic dissonance. He has to go. Thus the Uniparty "soft coup", which is failing, and far from over.
Trump has brought Americans to the Rubicon, trying to lead us across. Will we cross, clean out the corruption that has demonstrably infected tax collection, foreign relations, military, and our law enforcement and intelligence communities? Or do we pretend that this is all good, honest, and working on our behalf?

The VDH writings cannot begin a discussion without a mention of the flaws of Trump, and in the first sentences. That really turns me off to this writer, and all writers of this type. I think maybe these writers should spend more time looking at their own flaws. One improvement would be dropping their negative opinions before they begin a narrative.

I have heard his bluntness and at times cringed. I have also been delighted by his graciousness. But mostly, I am reassured by his absolute honesty and unabashed patriotism. He is, without question the man for the times.

I read the book...and as much as I like VDH..it drives me bats that "smart" people could not had known/sensed what we did..early on..anyway..I like the book but I still ground my teeth whenever he mentions that DJT was vulgar, coarse..please give me a break...actually the best book is by Sir Conrad Black..A President Like No Other..
it is a total MUST READ...I thought I knew most everything about POTUS since I have actually been following him since the 70's..since we are in the same "business"
