Democratic presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke on Wednesday released a plan intended to close socioeconomic gaps in schools across the country, including a $500 billion fund to address what his campaign called a “structural inequity” in the country’s education system. “Sixty-five years after Brown v. Board of Education, and America’s schools still remain segregated,” said Mr. O’Rourke, a former congressman from Texas. “The effects of a system where students of color are disciplined at alarmingly higher rates than white students, where funding favors white school districts over nonwhite districts, or where white teachers far outnumber black teachers live on well beyond students leaving the classroom.”

Argh...... Schools arent segregated. Schools are located in communities where people choose to live. People self segregate. People like to live in communities with people like themselves. Be that culture, language, religion, political affiliation, enthnicity and or race among others.
And...... education is not an enumerated power granted to the federal government. Its a state issue. Best left to the local governments to deal with.

"Students of color"------ does that mean blacks?---- are disciplined at a higher rate because they commit offenses at a higher rate in proportion to their numbers than whites do. Bobby Frank apparently cannot even do the simple math here---- or is he pandering? Blacks are more inclined to commit offenses. Do you suppose it's because there is no father at home?

So Bob, I suggest you shadow a teacher in a school in oh let's say the Englewood or Austin districts of Chicago. Then describe to me how more money can cure the cultural rot directly caused by handing out free money.
People are treated differently because they act differently. Exploring why they act differently is a logical path, exploring why the consequences of bad behavior are proportional to bad behavior will get you nowhere, other than perhaps elected in some places.

Yet another example of "Beto brilliance": Throw (more) boatloads of money at a problem money has been proven not to fix. Maybe a livestream-ed tonsillectomy or vasectomy for next week would be more attention-getting?

We already have the most expensive education system in the world. We are getting nothing for our money. It isn't the money, it is the idiots making the decisions that need to change.

Any deep dive into where "more money" goes in education proves that the students do not benefit.
More money merely helps fill in gaps in paying PENSIONS for retired teachers and staff.
The pension gap in current school budgets is humungous.
It's a black hole.

Sounds like Beto needs to pick up a substitute teacher gig in the inner city. Learning is just so "Uncle Tom" doncha know.

Same old baloney we've heard for years. The facts are different. Would love for Beto to explain how it is that Utah spends relatively little per student (about 9K per year) yet produces very good results. On the other hand, the District of Columbia spends almost 22K per student and has terrible results. Could it be that it's not about the money at all, but about the characteristics of the students? Sure looks that way to me.

Does this mean we all can go to Columbia and Yale and Harvard, and Georgetown, and Notre Dame and MIT, and U of Chicago and Dartmouth and Berkeley and...
Don't forget all the exclusive prep schools! You really can't get in without knowing someone who knows someone; "legacy" admissions are extremely exclusive, largely have no basis in academic qualifications, although those may stem from the prep school ticket, and then you're in the prestigious institutions which then open the doors of political power and the height of economic power.
So the day we see the O'Rourkes and Kennedys and Obamas and Warrens etc etc ready to give up their children's or grandchildren's admissions to the best schools we might be willing to listen to their baneful demagoguery.

Considering nearly all education funding is from local taxes, not the Federal government, what will $500 billion be spent on (and come with typical Federal strings)
I also can't see where $500 billion (split between 50 states) would even put a dent into the overall spending that's already happening.
His idea is to address inequality, but you can be sure if there was $500 billion to divvy up, it would NOT be allocated equitably, and the problem would still exist.

Some smart campaign advisor told him he ain't making it with the minorities so he better go after the teachers union. Problem is that the teachers for some reason love Buttgig. The Dem operating paradigm though is if you have thrown a ton of money at a problem and the problem got WORSE you just didn't throw ENOUGH money at it. Try again. Call any major California city for a progress report.

Every statement a total lie. The effects of a system where students of color are The effects of a system where students of color are disciplined at alarmingly higher rates than white students, where funding favors white school districts over nonwhite districts, or where white teachers far outnumber black teachers live on well beyond students leaving the classroom. Students of color are disciplined at alarmingly higher rates than white students because they are the ones causing the problems in classrooms. But this idiot didn't say that Obama fixed that problem. You can no longer discipline minority students. Now they just go ahead and beat up teachers and create violence in the classroom without fear of discipline. Guess this idiot hasn't read what is happening in schools in Philly, Chicago, Baltimore and other black cities. They are now freakin war zones.

Perhaps the money should be spent on getting these children new parents. Parents who will raise these children with positive attitudes, prepare them to receive all that school has to offer and with a good work ethic.

Stop refusing to hire republicans in the school districts and the education structure will see an immediate change. Since the Left refuses to hire anyone who disagrees with the agenda, of course the whole system is out of kilter. But throwing money down this rat hole will not fix it. Making it illegal to refuse to hire based on politics and somebody's differing opinions would go a long way.

Beto should propose a plan to address the 'structural inequity' found when funny-looking, gesticulating clowns become incredibly wealthy simply by hitting the marriage lottery. John Kerry could teach a masterclass on this point.
