Julián Castro, the former head of Housing and Urban Development, explained he does not speak Spanish fluently because his parents felt internalized oppression to make sure he could speak English."People, I think, internalized this oppression about it, and basically wanted their kids to first be able to speak English," Castro said Sunday in an interview aired on MSNBC. "And I think that in my family, like a lot of other families, that the residue of that, the impact of that is that there are many folks whose Spanish is not that great."Castro added that he is working to correct his parent's mistake

His single mother is a radical La Raza nutjob. There was no official "father." So, "in my family" just means his extended family through his mom.

Na, und? If my parents moved us to Mexico, we would have felt "internalized oppression" to have me and my siblings speak Spanish. A shared language is part of what makes a country a country. Get the * over it.

How absurd. My mother and father would not teach us Italian. This was not because we were "oppressed". It is, as my mother always said, because we are Americans! Of course, I do wish I spoke Italian!

Wow! And just like that he invents a whole nuther 'oppression'! Civil rights marches to ensue. Whereas previous new-language comers to the country strove to speak English to better themselves in their new surroundings and the common tongue, NOW that must be viewed as "oppression". I think Reparations may be in order.

That's actually perfectly normal. Grandparents from 'the old country' would be fluent in their native tongue but knew only a few words of English. The next generation would only know a few words of the foreign language. Within 3 generations English ruled the day.

My great-grandfather came to the United States, knowing no English. He learned English in school, but until the day he died, only German or Polish to be spoken in his home. Wanted to speak English, step outside...

The dearest things that Hispanic people hold sacred is (in my observations) family & culture. How many can recall seeing [ictures & news videos of border protestors flying Mexican flags? Certainly, speaking Spanish would be a significant part of their culture so what in the hell is Castro talking about? Looks like Communisim has stolen your mother toongue too you naive fool.

My family had a similar experience to Number 6. My grandfather spoke German - he married a woman who grew up speaking Norwegian and French. However he was adamant that in his house, “We speak only English because we are Americans!” In fact, only “proper” English was allowed - no slang terms or swear words whatsoever. My Grandpa Schultz was very proud of his adopted country. You couldn’t tell him he was oppressed!

He is an adult. He wants to speak Spanish but he has never bothered to learn as an adult because ?? He wants to run the greatest country in the world but he doesn’t have the courage to learn another language ?? This should go well.

Just tell the truth, Jule. You don't speak Spanish fluently because there's not much need for it to you. You hanged out with english-speaking friends, until you became a politician which you find now as very useful for your career.

It's far more common to find bilingual families in Europe than here. To speak a language fluently, it's best to learn it as a child, or failing that, do complete immersion. One side of my family came over on the Mayflower -- no language problem there. The other side came from Germany and France, and their next generation spoke only English, not through oppression, but because it was the norm. That said, a second and third language is definitely a plus. Ivanka and Jared Jushner's kids all speak Chinese fluently, BTW.

What a mound of equine refuse. He speaks lousy Spanish because (a) his mom never taught him, and/or (b) his mom or extended family didn't speak proper Spanish to begin with, and/or (c) he never took lessons, which are available in TX public schools, and/or (d) and this is the real reason, he can use his Spanish illiteracy (analfabetismo) as a political took to claim victimhood/discrimination, et al.
After 11 years living in TX, my conclusion is that 2nd or 3rd generation Mexican progeny don't speak Spanish because of (a) through (c). Castro just happens to be a dishonest flunkie.

Such horse hockey. Once upon a time immigrants wanted not just to come to the USA but to 'be Americans'. And they wanted this even more for their children. That is why they abandoned their mother tongues. Their primary desire was for their children to be fully 'American'. Internal oppression - baloney! Now our immigrants are taught when they get here that their language, their culture, is good enough - Oh! And BTW vote Democrat. The rest of us will bend over backwards to keep you from needing to assimilate. The only oppression now is for those who think America is great BECAUSE we once had a common language and values.

My guess is he was ashamed that he was a Hispanic in his youth and resisted playing the part of a dutiful son by embracing his culture and language but now embraces his background because it benefits him. BTW, he (and his twin) looks more Asian than Hispanic.

Maybe you and your mother should have moved to a Spanish speaking country instead of staying where English is the language spoken by 95% of the country.

- - isn't Spanish the language of the Conquistadors - - the brutal oppressors of the Native People?
Like - - why would any Central or South American choose to speak that language - - instead of speaking their own Aztec, Mayan, or Incan dialects?
No more Español! It's the language of slavery!

Thanks to Barack Obama, every progressive is now a victim of something or somebody.
Julian Castro is a victim because his parents knew that living in an English speaking country, if he wanted to make his way and be successful he needed to be able to speak the language spoken by nearly 100% of the inhabitants of the nation. They were smart. His first words should have been THANK YOU to his folks. Castro is an ungrateful kid, in addition to being another progressive bed-wetter. Little wonder Obama had a position for him in his Cabinet.

As a native San Antonian, I can tell you there is absolutely NO oppression of Spanish being spoken. Quite the opposite. It was at one time, maybe more than sixty years ago. But for a generation or more, one is more likely to be oppressed, at least when seeking employment and such if one doesn't speak Spanish.

What an idiot. Your parents made you speak English because you were an American. You probably have not noticed that Italians, Germans, Swedes, Roumanians, Africans, Chinese, etc taught their kids English so they could fully benefit from the freedoms afforded to them in the US.
