1. The Disappearance at 12:42 a.m. on the quiet, moonlit night of March 8, 2014, a Boeing 777-200ER operated by Malaysia Airlines took off from Kuala Lumpur and turned toward Beijing, climbing to its assigned cruising altitude of 35,000 feet. The designator for Malaysia Airlines is MH. The flight number was 370. Fariq Hamid, the first officer, was flying the airplane. He was 27 years old. This was a training flight for him, the last one; he would soon be fully certified. His trainer was the pilot in command, a man named Zaharie Ahmad Shah, who at 53 was one of the most senior captains at Malaysia Airlines. In Malaysian style,

This is an extremely long piece which I will read later at my leisure. Thanks for posting, Miss Molly. The author's father is Wolfgang Langewiesche who wrote the book "Stick and Rudder" decades ago, still one of the best books ever written that simply and plainly describes how and airplane flies and how to control it!

Amazing. Thanks so much for posting. Well written piece answering the who, what, where, when, why and how of a mystery with nothing even remotely fake included. I felt like I entered a time warp. Journalists actually CAN turn out articles that are completely factual and unbiased. Imagine that.

One of the young officers at my bank is Malaysian. Her surname is unpronounceable, containing about a gazillion consonents. When we first learned of this plane's disappearance, I happened to be at her desk. She was quite shaken and told me that she and her family, including those living here and those still in Malaysia, fly in and out of that airport frequently. I have been guilty of forgetting that real people are victims of these tragedies and not just anonymous groups of "others", but no more.

Fascinating article. Lots of detail. How sad for the families of the victims. They'll probably never know for sure what happened, but this article probably tells the story it as well as it will ever be told, and indicates that the plane's black boxes probably won't tell much more.

I read this a few days ago. Good look at what happened. Anyone who is surprised that an incompetent, corrupt 3rd world dictatorship run by Muslims was not interested in actually getting to the bottom of this is pretty naive.

‘That’s Hell’: Democrats’ Debate Prep Gets Real 10 replies

Often in the early evening over the last few weeks, Joe Biden’s team has told reporters that the front-runner doesn’t have a public campaign schedule for the next day, but that he instead “will meet with advisers.” Biden has lots of meetings to attend to, but increasingly this has been code for prep sessions as the former vice-president and his aides think through how to counter a wide array of inevitable attacks in what will likely be just six and a half to nine minutes of talking time on the debate stage in Miami on Thursday. Biden debated well during the 2008 cycle and as the vice-president

Medicare-for-all. Medicare for all who want it. Health care as a form of freedom. As they campaign, most of the 23 Democratic candidates for president are trumpeting bold ideas to achieve the party’s long-held dream of ushering in health coverage for every American. The problem is that many voters are not focused on such lofty goals. They want something simpler — to pay less for their own health care. Voters have plenty to sort out, with nearly two dozen Democrats running, each offering a raft of proposals on many issues. But in public opinion surveys and interviews, people rank health care as their top concern. And with insurance deductibles,

Former Vice President Joe Biden compared President Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory to the assassinations of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and civil rights leader Martin Luther King. Trump’s victory awakened the millennial generation to the importance of getting involved in politics, Biden said in an interview Saturday. The former vice president is one of 25 prominent Democrats running against Trump in 2020. “I think what’s happening now is, I think that Donald Trump may have reawakened sensibilities

It’s an article of faith among Democrats that the President’s base consists primarily of white working class voters without college degrees, and that they must be won back in order to beat Trump in 2020. This is why Elizabeth Warren inflicted that cringe-making, “I’m gonna get me a beer,” video on a long-suffering electorate. It is why Joe Biden, who reputedly enjoys a special rapport with blue collar voters, is the frontrunner for his party’s presidential nomination despite his penchant for gaffes and plagiarism. Thus, during this week’s Democratic debates, the candidates will devote considerable effort to courting the “deplorables.” This will, however, be an exercise in futility because everything

On June 29, 2017, the Dailymail in UK ran an article headlined “Four years to save the Earth: 2020 is the deadline to avert climate catastrophe, experts claim in chilling commentary.” Two years later and halfway to deadline, the earth has not changed much. If anything, the El Niño of the 2016-17 season gave way for much cooler temperatures across the globe and the past two years have been colder than 2016. This is just one of the many climate doomsday news articles that gets published in our mainstream news media every single day. How seriously should we treat the climate doomsday claims? E. Jean Carroll, a longtime women’s advice columnist, has accused President Trump of sexually assaulting her more than two decades ago in the dressing room of a department store. Carroll, who was 52 years old at the time of the alleged assault, makes this allegation in a book she has just published. I have no trouble believing that Trump has improperly and forcefully touched women in the past. For one thing, he said he has (to Billy Bush). For another, more than a dozen women have accused him of this. Maybe they are all lying, but coupled with his admission, I think some of them are probably telling the truth.

Since the rise of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979, Iran has been in a state of ideological, religious cold war against the United States and its allies. Desiring to become the dominant force in the Mideast, Iran has worked to export its particular brand of Islamist revolution beyond its present borders. At the same time, like the Soviet Union with its specific version of Marxist-Leninism, Iran’s leaders have sought to expand their country’s zone of influence and control beyond its current national boundaries, to encompass the entire region — looking at the outside world in Manichean terms: divided between Iran’s Twelver Shiite brand

YouTube, Facebook, and Amazon have recently come under withering criticism from journalists and lawmakers for their role in amplifying unfounded and occasionally dangerous conspiracy theories, including the false but persistent belief that vaccines cause autism. The uproar caused Facebook to pledge to make it harder to find vaccine conspiracies on its platform, and Amazon has removed misleading documentaries from its video streaming service. But as false beliefs continue to fuel an unprecedented outbreak of measles, it's not just social media platforms that bear responsibility for keeping the conspiracy alive. HuffPost, the left-leaning internet news site owned by Verizon, currently positions itself squarely against vaccine conspiracy theories.

Let’s get this straight: Joe Biden is leading in the polls for the Democratic presidential nomination because he’s the most “electable” candidate in the Democratic field? A guy who doesn’t realize that I worked with segregationists isn’t a winning message with Democrats in 2020? This is what you get when you turn to a candidate who has been in Washington for 46 years. Biden was first elected to the Senate in 1972, when the Democratic Party was very different than it is today. As a freshman senator, he had to get along with the senior leadership of his party — which included segregationists

As activists strove over the past two years to take down statues of slave owners, Confederates, and racists, we generally agreed with the efforts but worried about who their next target would be. It ended up being Christianity. The iconoclasts have lost for now. The American Humanist Association persuaded only two of nine Supreme Court justices that the Constitution demanded demolition of a century-old war monument in the shape of a cross. The ruling had narrow implications. The cross in question — the Peace Cross, a World War I memorial in Bladensburg, Md. — has been around so long that it had taken on a mostly secular meaning,

Last Monday evening, Ocasio-Cortez compared detention facilities for illegal aliens caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to “concentration camps,” adding the phrase “never again,” which commonly refers to the Nazi Holocaust. The remark drew outrage and criticism, even from fellow Democrats. Nevertheless, Ocasio-Cortez doubled down, first claiming that she had not been referring to Nazi Germany, then drawing parallels to the U.S. internment of Japanese-Americans during the Second World War.

Young people are growing less tolerant of LGBTQ individuals, a jarring turn for a generation traditionally considered embracing and open, a survey released Monday shows. The number of Americans 18 to 34 who are comfortable interacting with LGBTQ people slipped from 53% in 2017 to 45% in 2018 – the only age group to show a decline, according to the annual Accelerating Acceptance report. And that is down from 63% in 2016. Driving the dilution of acceptance are young women whose overall comfort levels plunged from 64% in 2017 to 52% in 2018, says the survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD.
