The Department of Defense has a suicide problem. Thank Presidents Clinton and Obama. Prior to 1993, the Department of Defense (DOD) used to screen recruits, officer candidates, and service academy entrants for mental, personality, and suicide behavior disorders. Now they don’t.The Department of Defense uses the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as its source reference for psychiatric diagnoses and metal disorders. Most Americans have little knowledge of, the DSM, its contents, and its implications. The DSM is published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and “offers a common language and standard criteria for the classification of mental

The TV show Seal Team has been bringing this problem to the forefront in a respectful way. Good for them.

I´m sure some of it is related to arresting good men who kill or even threaten murderous terrorists on the battlefield. This is WRONG.
If our soldiers kill a terrorist, that is an unalloyed good. Details about the possibility of some sort of a foot fault, or ´done wrong´ penalty are stupid and counterproductive.

#1, and they are doing a pretty good job of it. Amazing, considering that it is CBS, whose news side is pure garbage.
I had a relative who was attached to the SEALs, a SpecOps qualified specialist from another service. I have seen some of the stress, and it has broken one marriage in our larger family.
Being a warrior is not easy. They need our support in all things.

I’m limping around at work today with my annual 6 week long bout of sciatica — shrapnel and broken back pressing in nerve randomly courtesy of Saadam Hussein.
It’s a pretty dibilitating and humiliating thing for a big strong guy. Getting off the toilet is torture, as is driving a car.
I’m pretty bummed it was all for naught — we never had the nerve to do anything but half measures, which are pointless and worse than nothing.
If we’d have gone on and blown away Iran and just killed the radicals, I’d limo in pride.
But now I know myself to have been the sucker.
That’s why so many soldiers are depressed.
The swamp in Washington frittered away our blood and treasure.

Above comments are well put but author hits the nail on the head by further explaining "mental disorders" to include anything trans - until PIAPS´ husband decided otherwise:
When you no longer disqualify people with sexual and personality disorders and mental illnesses, the category of people with a built-in stratospherically-high suicide rate, is anyone really surprised the Services´ suicide rates are off the chart?
I could take it one step further. Competition for employees today is fierce and the military will enlist anyone who walks through the door. Many of those have grown up in artificial worlds of participation trophies and virtual reality. Real-world immersion (let alone combat) at age 20+ is too much for some to handle.

#4, you were NOT "a sucker", you were and are a patriot. Please remember that many of us hold your actions in high esteem.
Thank you for your service, and I hope your wounds will trouble you the least possible amount.

Seems to be a trend that started in the late 60´s #4. Send in troops to fight an enemy, but have the troops fight with one hand tied behind their back as to not make the enemy or it´s allies mad. Then to make sure the troops are fighting correctly, saddle them with an lawyer in their midst to make sure their fighting doesn´t break the rules set by politicians who really don´t want a win, but just an appearance of victory.

So let me get this straight. We know homosexuals, and especially transgenders, have a higher than average suicide rate. Yet we put firearms, or at least access to firearms, in their possession? And now many states are passing Red Flag laws to take weapons out of the hands of people who are deemed to be a danger to themselves and others. That’s government logic for you.
Here’s another example I saw personally. When I was in the Army, we had a new private join our company. This kid did not want to be in the Army so he cut his wrists in a half-hearted suicide attempt. The CO sent him to the base hospital and they bandaged him up and sent him back. The very next day, he was issued an M-16 and ammo with the rest of his platoon and sent out to the qualifying range. Somehow, he kept a few live rounds. The next day, we was issued a weapon again and missed formation. His sergeant and a few other went looking for him and saw him across the street from the company area. The private took a few potshots at the detail, then bent over the rifle and shot himself in the stomach. He survived and was served with an Article 32 while at the hospital for destruction of government property.
