In “Republicans in a Nation” (Washington Post, May 4-5, 2019) “conservative” columnist Peggy Noonan outdid herself in an entertaining display of intellectual gymnastics to defend the following premise: …old conservatism was deeply pertinent to its era and philosophy right, but it is not fully in line with the crisis of our time or its reigning facts. Conservatism centers on the belief that some ideas are timeless. The notion that even one of these ideas was merely “pertinent to its era” is the opposite of conservatism.

This Reagan speechwriter is telling Republicans to adopt a “I´m from the government and I´m here to help” platform. But she forgets when Mr. Reagan said this, he preceded it with “The most terrifying words in the English language are...”. Maybe she didn’t write that for him?

Woah Peggy darling you are scaring me. You said regarding making government smaller and less expensive:
"There is no political will for it among elected officials in Washington"
And your answer is to just forget that silly notion. Well I hate to break it to you but it isn´t for officials in Washington to determine it is we the people or have you forgotten? Because guess what, we haven´t begun to play cowboys and commies yet. What did you think the Tea Party was all about? Apparently you may not have reflected on why we elected someone who was not a Washington politician or official. Get a grip things are coming to a head we have had it and you haven´t seen anything yet.
Our answer is to change Washington, drain the swamp, call a convention of states hit the reset button on the constitution.

From this conservative´s perspective, it is the GOVERNMENT (and NOT just an UNHELPFUL government) that got us into the mess we find ourselves -- a big, bloated, one-size-fits-all government. And behind all this is a political, elitist class (which apparently includes Ms. Peggy) that does not have the will to shrink the government.
Give people opportunity in the form of employment and higher wages and may problems will be solved. Throw in faith in God -- a loving God, not the Sharia-Law loving god of the Left -- and see how people move compassionately to help those less fortunate than themselves. Religious folks -- like the Salvation Army or Catholic Charities -- do a lot of good for a lot of people without the bloated breast of government.
Ms. Peggy has drunk the Lefty Kool-Aid. She is a big disappointment.

I think I read about this before. Did she rehash this over the weekend for a different publication?
Or is my deja-vu kicking in again? ;)

Peggy, you need to take a year off writing and live in flyover country and perhaps get a real job.

Ms Noonan is from the dark ages. She needs to catch up on what´s happening in the 21st century.

I get really nervous when a Constitutional Convention is mentioned. I’m not comfortable opening that door to the the ridiculous politicians we have. I can’t imagine an amendment that I would support that I actually think would be ratified.
And to the wolves in sheep’s clothing who want to discard the Constitution and start over, I say no, no, no. They would discard the Republic in favor of a multitude of mischief. They should let my generation die in peace. That will give them time to pack the grandstands with those who foolishly believe in mobocracy. There will be no memories abroad in the country to remind what life used to be. Crime was not rampant, and minorities kept their foolishness to their own neighborhoods. Marriage was valued. Vulgar language was not ensconced among good people. Although we fell short of the mark, at least there was a general sense of right and wrong.

For a woman with intellectual firepower, her perception about matches that of a mole chasing worms and grubs. It never sees the light of day in spite of the fact that the animal may be only a couple of inches away from the surface of the ground.
Like someone already said, she needs to live in flyover country for a year or two. She might meet some REAL people with a REAL sense of the public good and the way a republic is intended to work.
Since President Reagan was a fine writer in his own right--no pun intended--he may have polished her work to make it better than it otherwise was on its own. I´ve read accounts of his having to pencil in items that the speechwriters refused to include.

Re#10: A constitutional convention has not been proposed. What has been proposed is an Article V Convention of the States to Propose Amendments. It is simply a way for the states to bypass Congress in proposing and passing amendments to the constitution. Any amendments passed out of the Convention of States would still have to be ratified by two thirds of the several states. This procedure was given to us by the Founding Fathers as a mechanism to override a congress which refuses to answer to We The People. The only other way to accomplish that is to take up arms. That should be a last resort.

I sometimes like Peggy´s columns but her big problem is that she lives in New York, hangs out with New York Times columnists, Harvard and Yale alums and political savants from CBS and NBC. Having those defectives as friends eventually warps your judgement and, sadly, Peggy´s conservatism and Republicanism has been chipped away at over the years by these people. Perhaps if Peggy lived in Cheyenne or Kansas City or Dallas her viewpoints would have more clarity and her Republicanism would be more substantial.

FTA: "It strains credulity that Noonan once wrote speeches for this great president [Ronald Reagan]."
Yes, it does. For me it also strained credulity when, on-air during President Reagan´s funeral, Ms Noonan made vicious personal attacks on fellow speech writers who had worked for Ronald Reagan.
I´d never much admired her thinking or writing before; but lost all respect for her after that.

Peggy strikes me as a woman who walks around looking like she just had a double dose of Valium or too many glasses of Chardonnay (or maybe mixed the two). When she is on the Sunday Shows she slurs her words and truly looks like she is in La La Land! Poor Dear! I don´t pay a bit of attention to anything she says or writes!

Rush had a good discussion today about what makes a conservative today. He emphasized that a modern conservative must actively oppose liberalism and Leftist thinking.
By that standard, Peggy is no conservative.

She is the only writer whose drivel comes pre-wrapped in cotton wool and sugar. If she ever expressed an overly strong sentiment, I think the shock would be too much. She would blow a fuse. I prefer plain speaking writers, who say what they mean without the mental bubble wrap.
