Elizabeth Warren unveils new plan to make childbirth safer for African American women

Elizabeth Warren has detailed a plan to incentivise hospitals to make childbirth safer for African American women. The candidate, who has unveiled a number of comprehensive platforms for her possible presidency, is being met with praise for the proposed policy, which she revealed at the She the People conference in Texas. “Black moms in our country are dying from childbirth-related causes 3-4 times more often than white moms,” Warren said in a tweet accompanying video of her talk on the policy. “Any meaningful solution to our maternal mortality crisis must address structural racism as a root cause of this problem.

Structural racism forces black women to become pregnant when very young, before marriage, and to forego proper prenatal care, including proper diet, avoidance of street drugs, and bothering to get regular checkups, even though such care is available for free via Medicaid. Structural racism must also cause problems with high blood pressure, diabetes, etc, and people showing up at the emergency room with untreated end-stage diseases.

I suspect that anything that makes childbirth less safe for African American women has absolutely nothing to do with skin color. This one is today; what scheme will she invent tomorrow to try to buy more votes?

Well, you knew it was going to involve two things: First, blame white people. Second, spend more money. The formula never changes, it just adapts to every possible situation.

I suppose one of the causes would be extremely high rates of abortion for urban black women. That has nothing to do with ´structural´ racism. Maybe if you connect the founders to ´Planned´ Parenthood.

Otherwise I would think that low income as a result of the black community having a very low percentage of fathers in the households. Government handouts are a poor substitute for fathers and their incomes.

Fta “Literally financial incentives for them to do right and penalties if they do wrong. I’ll be damned.” The “bbook” shows thar medical circumstances have something to do with the higher death rate. So do life circumstances, obesity, genetics,..most of which a hospital has no control. Llawatha is damned from the getgo

As much as I loathe Elizabeth Warren, at least she´s got some ideas. Many are bad ideas, and some are absolutely dreadful (e.g., forgiving student loans while letting universities off the hook), but at least she has some. Beto Gutierrez O´Rourke, Mayor Pete, and Kamala Harris -- not so much.

I think that Trump will trounce any Democrat, regardless (or because!) of the polls that show him 8 points behind Joe Biden.

Did Lizzie get the official okey dokey from planned Parenthood for this scheme? PP was founded with the objective of eliminating the Black race after all.

Supposedly having an abortion or two carries greater risks for women during subsequent pregnancies. Given the success of Planned Parenthood in performing abortions of Black fetuses, I wonder if some of these at risk women fall into that category.

So is she the ‘new’ Margaret Sanger? Perhaps black women should know what good ole Maggie’s plans were back in the day...to control the black population...and her Planned Parenthood today still controls the black population perhaps in quieter, discreet ways. But PP is fully supported by the Democratic Party and they aim for the black vote every election cycle. Funny ain’t it?

I didn’t see any real substance here. Just a broad brush stroke swipe at the whiteness of medicine and a need to throw more money at it. There is no way one can police these women’s health - their diet, their use of alcohol and/or drugs, their reckless behavior with men (even while pregnant), the possibility of underlying or acquired diseases that affect their babies, the list could go on and on. No amount of government money will cause people to change their behavior, baby or no…

More “feel good” pandering...

As far as I know this pattern exists throughout the world. For example, I recall reading a study of pregnancy outcomes among military women in the U.S. Everyone had access to the same military healthcare. Same facilities, same doctors.

Black women still had substantially worse outcomes than white women.

I understand Ms. Warren is going for the soundbite, not the solution--but I suspect there are many factors--long before actual delivery--that affect this discrepancy. Poor nutrition, diabetes, maternal drug use, lack of proper pre-natal care....all could contribute. And all the money in the world to incentivize "safe deliveries" for women of color will not change this. But that´s not the point, right?

Blacks, men and women, are more likely than other races to suffer from hypertension. That, in turn, combined with high obesity rate for black women, can mess up their kidneys and cause gestational diabetes.
Some young black women snort cocaine to bring on labor. They, and others of their ilk, smoke, use drugs, and drink alcohol during pregnancy.

Why does Lizzie blame the hospitals for the elevated death rates for black women during childbirth, when they are doing the damage to themselves?
This is insane.
