An Air France flight was blocked from entering US airspace and instead diverted to Canada over fears of one passenger’s exposure to the Ebola outbreak in Africa. Air France Flight 378 was scheduled to land at Detroit Metro Wayne Airport in Michigan late Wednesday afternoon before it changed course for Montreal Trudeau International Airport in the Canadian city. US officials stopped the flight from entering the country after it was revealed a passenger from the Democratic Republic of Congo was allowed to board “in error,” the US Customs and Border Protection told CBS News. “Due to entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the Ebola virus,

very interesting to see whether Ebola patients die once they are moved away from that latitude. i think the dust in those latitudes is tearing up their lungs and making them fragile. once they are away, let's see. Didn't some guy fly into Texas about ten years ago with one of these fell diseases, come staggering off the plane coughing blood, and then get better? Also, are people with beards a little bit safer? should be. a kind of shield against dust

As I said on another post, I've been rereading the Tom Clancy books, and every time I start a new one, it starts happening in the real world. I'm doing executive orders now, which is about Ebola virus getting smuggled into the US. Clancy got the details right, meticulously so. Ebola is an incredibly dangerous virus, and it will kill you in the worst possible way eight times out of 10. However, it is not ordinarily transmissible through aerosol, so breathing coughing and sneezing wouldn't normally be enough. Typically, it involves contact with contaminated fluids, usually blood, which veritably sprays out of the poor Ebola victims. Sincere kind wishes for every poor soul on that plane, but they will hopefully be okay once the potentially exposed individual is removed.

Sorry for being pedantic but did just read the book on this one. The other thing I should have mentioned is Ebola is very fragile. It doesn't do well outside of host organisms and lasts for minutes at most. Ultraviolet rays --e.g sunlight or even, in Clancy's book, a photocopier--destroy the virus. It needs humid temperate spaces to survive.

There’s been a very strange story that was printed not long ago by the liberal opinion journalist Nicholas Kristof. Now, apparently, he’s been retired. He’s written for decades at The New York Times. He’s sort of a social activist. He does some good things sometimes, but he tries to draw attention of The New York Times readership to supposed crises of morality all over the globe, such as the so-called genocide. And it depends on who you talk to. In Darfur, he visited it very many times. But he’s had a checkered career. During the anthrax scare near the millennium,

A Supreme Court ruling handed down on Thursday may end up being worth hundreds of millions of dollars for the Havana Docks Corp. In 1960, after the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro’s regime simply took the company’s facilities and made them its own. That’s communism for you, folks. Like democratic socialists Zohran Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, they may have big smiles, but in the end, they want to take your stuff. Decades later, the overlords decided to let major cruise lines use the docks, but those cruise lines never paid a dime to the rightful owners. The SCOTUS ruling could change that:

House Democrats joined six Republicans on Thursday to derail legislation advancing the long-delayed Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum after Republicans added language clarifying that the museum would focus on biological women. The bill failed in a 216-204 vote, despite years of bipartisan support for the project. The legislation had been spearheaded by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis. The collapse came after Republicans amended the proposal to specify that the museum would be dedicated to “preserving, researching, and presenting the history, achievements, and lived experiences of biological women in the United States.” The revised legislation also prohibited the museum from portraying “any biological male as a female.”

Virginia’s new Democrat Governor Abigail Spanberger has just announced that she is signing an executive order to keep ICE agents away from polling places. Why do you suppose such a thing would be necessary? Democrats assure us that illegal aliens are not voting because they are forbidden from doing so by law. So why would they be worried about ICE showing up at polling places? It just doesn’t make any sense. Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger said Tuesday that she plans to issue an executive order on Wednesday to help election workers respond if federal agents show up at polling sites in Virginia.

Folks, I think we've officially reached the tipping point when it comes to the fall of communist Cuba. If anyone else was president, I wouldn't buy it myself, but Donald Trump is, and I do. Ironically, it happened on May 20, when the country should be celebrating its independence, but it's a day that the regime refuses to acknowledge. "Today marks the beginning of the end for the Castro family," Rep. María Salazar said, following the big news on Wednesday. In case you missed it, that big news was the Department of Justice (DOJ) announcing that it was charging Raúl Castro with conspiracy to kill U.S.—

President Donald Trump spoke at the Congressional Picnic on the White House South Lawn and made a point that normal folks understood straight away. He listed better economic signs, including factory construction, housing starts, and consumer spending, then added, “We have an economy; people aren't seeing it yet.” His critics treated that line like a confession. A plainer reading points elsewhere: Trump was taking a shot at a media class that wouldn't recognize good economic news if it landed on the South Lawn with a brass band wearing bowl cuts. The distinguished political scientist Graham Allison, author of the 2015 Atlantic article “The Thucydides Trap,” argued that often in history an established power will stage a preventive war against an ascendant adversary—for fear that otherwise it will soon lose its primacy. His title derives from two passages in the first book of the ancient Greek historian Thucydides (460–400/395? BC), author of The Peloponnesian War. Thucydides, on these two occasions, felt that the most likely cause of the Spartan-Athenian war (431–404) was Spartan fear of an increasingly powerful rival Athenian empire.

For decades, the SPLC has positioned itself as the nation’s preeminent watchdog, which maintained a controversial "Hate Map" that increasingly labeled benign conservative organizations and religious groups as hate groups. But a recent federal indictment returned by a grand jury suggests the organization was playing a double game by allegedly manufacturing the very extremism it claimed to be fighting to keep its fundraising machine humming.

Every March and November, Americans dread the notification in their inbox or on the news to “Remember to change your clocks!” Most of us rely on the adage “Fall back in fall—spring forward in spring” to sort out the confusion of which way the clock is moving. But you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who gets excited about the biannual shift. However, many Americans do love the later hours of sunlight daylight saving time affords. With equal fervor, others, particularly older people, dislike the thought of getting up in the dark that accompanies it.
