Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick says he has traded California for Texas, joining a growing list of billionaires abandoning the state as lefty lawmakers push for a one-off tax their wealth.
Appearing on TPBN to discuss his robotics startup Atoms, Kalanick told hosts John Coogan and Jordi Hays he relocated to Austin on December 18.
California lawmakers and activists are currently pushing a proposed 2026 Billionaire Tax Act, which could appear on the state’s November 2026 ballot. The measure would impose a one-time 5% tax on fortunes exceeding $1 billion and would apply to people who were California residents as of January 1, 2026.

Newsom: "We finally got the Billionaire Tax through. Well done!"
Aide: "Sir, there are not billionaires left in CA."
Newsom: "Replace the B with an M. Problem solved."
The biggest lie on the planet - a "one time" tax.

Democrats are terrible money managers. They always overspend. Their solution to this is always to raise taxes. Democrat voters, not being too bright, haven't realized this yet.

He was able to take his politics with him, by moving to Austin. That city is Kalifornia lite! Now he can start contributing to the demise of Texas conservatism.

Talkin' exit penalties, downwardly-mobile tax brackets, breathing fees, gasoline wars... anything but immigration discipline and fiscal common sense.

The Democrats in California seem to be ignorant of the moral of the story about the goose that laid the golden eggs.

Not surprising. If you plan on legally stealing billions from people, they WILL work to avoid that theft. And moving out of the state is comparatively easy.
Bye!

To #4, you are correct about Austin being "Kalifornia Lite." There is one important difference, however. Austin is located in the Great State of Texas, and taxes are determined by the state ( the state has even placed property tax limits on Texas cities) determines what taxes will be imposed. As someone said, Austin is the blueberry in the tomato soup. May it ever be so.

The New York City sales tax was imposed as a WWII emergency measure - - set to expire when the war was over.
Of course - - that depends on the meaning of the war being "over" - - because 81 years later - - the tax is still there.

Yep. Even Kalanick understands how his corporate bread is buttered. One-time tax? Dims, forget about it. We are more than tired of your political pretend games.

This billionaire tax in CA won't even be voted on until November, yet by then, there will be no billionaires left in CA to tax. The proposition is going to pass...... because of voter fraud and ballot harvesting. The Ignorantocracy in CA love to vote for tax increases when they think they are free and clear. This means the 'state' will necessarily have to default to millionaires and thousandaires. By definition, a millionaire in CA could be a family of two, who bought a 70 year old house that is now worth a million dollars (through inflation - caused by govt). There are literally millions in CA who are house rich and cash poor - (through no fault of there own - once again, govt caused inflation), who may lose their homes because they can't pay the tax. It's the same thing that was happening to seniors back in the 70's, whereby their property taxes were going up and up, thus forcing them to either sell, or outright lose their homes. This would be govt theft at its worst!!
