Supreme Court justices appear skeptical

Supreme Court justices on Wednesday morning expressed skepticism about the legality of aggressive tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump against most of the world's nations. Conservative and liberal justices sharply questioned Solicitor General D. John Sauer on the Trump administration's method for enacting the tariffs, which critics say infringes on the power of Congress to tax. Lower federal courts have ruled that Trump lacked the legal authority he cited under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose the so-called reciprocal tariffs on imports from many U.S. trading partners, and fentanyl tariffs on products from Canada, China and Mexico.

I'm skeptical of the source as well, but President Trump does himself no favors by posting: "Tomorrow’s United States Supreme Court case is, literally, LIFE OR DEATH for our Country.... Without it, we are virtually defenseless against other Countries who have, for years, taken advantage of us...and our Country has never been more respected than it is right now." So we are "literally" going to die as a country because the supreme court reverses punitive tariffs imposed under the auspices of various implausible emergencies used by President Trump to justify his arbitrary misuse of tarrif authority delegated by Congress? And that will leave us "virtually defenseless"? I had no idea we were so utterly weak and vulnerable. Fortunately, we've "never been more respected than now," so we don't need to worry. As I said on another thread, I like President Trump, I would like to see his policies given a chance to success, and I don't like at all the supreme court telling the President and Congress what they can and can't do. But, man alive, he sometimes makes things harder than they need to be.

I don't understand where the Supreme Court has any say in this matter. This is a policy issue, not a legal issue.

Our trade "partners" have been eating our lunch in trade for many decades. We have low, if any tariffs, yet they have high tariffs or other trade restrictions to either keep our products out of their countries or make them too expensive for most. If only Congress can impose tariffs, then we are sunk. As the DemoRoids have more than 40 seats in the Senate, they can filibuster any proposed tariff, and thus hamstring PDJT 2.0 in his efforts to bring about free and fair trade. As one Supreme Court Justice once said: "The Constitution is not a suicide pact." I'm sure as soon as the DemoRoids win control of the Senate, they will nuke the requirement of 60 votes to invoke cloture, so the Republicans may as well do it now, and get something done.

Hope someone explains to the SC that Presidents from John Q Adams to the late 1800’s used tariffs to run the government. There were NO taxes on the citizens. Democommies dont like Americans not paying taxes and “contributing” to their special causes. Like cookie baking classses in Hattie for male prostitutes

The California Republican Party filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday challenging the state’s new congressional district maps, alleging Democrats illegally used race as the primary factor in redrawing boundaries to favor Latino voters. The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, seeks to invalidate Proposition 50, which voters approved on Tuesday to implement legislature-drawn maps for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections. The lawsuit names both officials in their official capacities as defendants responsible for implementing the challenged maps.

Voters in Texas seemed poised on Tuesday night to approve a series of tax exemptions and bans as well as new investments in state infrastructure and research. All 17 constitutional amendments on the ballot held majority support Tuesday night, most of which restrict the creation of certain taxes or allow for new tax exemptions. Other amendments would create state investments in water infrastructure, dementia research and technical college funds. Proposition 10 received the largest share of voter support Tuesday night. The amendment would temporarily lower homeowners’ property taxes if their homes are destroyed by fires.

Will Democrats choose tonight to cave on the Schumer Shutdown? Have they already chosen to cave? Earlier today, Senate Democrats again blocked the clean continuing resolution from coming to the floor for the 14th time in the last five weeks, with no movement toward ending the filibuster that has kept the government mainly shuttered since funding ran out on October 1st. However, something is afoot this afternoon among Chuck Schumer's caucus, even after Trump's refusal to budge on SNAP: Whatever could that mean? Schumer has spent the last five weeks insisting that there were no other options. So, for that matter, have John Thune and Donald Trump.

Every search query you make will be tied to your ID, ready for the government to conveniently track you as you move around the internet. But fear not, until they do, they have other ways to go all Chinese Communist Party social credit system on you. Embattled Democrat Jay Jones, who spent recent weeks embroiled in a scandal surrounding violent text messages he sent in 2022, won Virginia’s off-year attorney general contest on Tuesday evening against GOP incumbent Jason Miyares. Jones’s victory was a major defeat for Republicans, who spent millions in advertising in the final stretch of the campaign to boost Miyares. Jones was leading 53 percent to Miyares’s 47 percent with 90 percent of ballots cast when the Associated Press called the race. Jones was helped across the finish line by Democratic gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger, who soundly defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears

Californians have voted to approve Proposition 50, a redistricting proposal that would add as many as five Democrat-held seats in Congress. Governor Gavin Newsom said the measure would allow the blue state to fight back against President Trump’s agenda and “efforts to undermine the democratic process.” Newsom proposed the redistricting plan in response to redistricting efforts in Texas that favor Republicans. Lone Star State Republicans revised their maps mid-decade, redrawing lines in such a way that Republicans could gain five seats during next year’s midterms.

Greg Abbott wasted no time mourning the election results. “Join me for a moment of silence for NYC,” Abbott wrote on X, just minutes after the race was called. He also offered “thoughts and prayers” with an emoji depicting hands in prayer. Mamdani is the city’s first Muslim and first South Asian to be elected mayor, and he will be the youngest mayor of New York City in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.

Far-left Democrat Zohran Mamdani has won New York City’s mayoral race — winning a mandate to move to enact his budget-busting, socialist agenda, according to preliminary projections. The Associated Press called the race for Mamdani, 34, about 40 minutes after polls closed, and with at least a few hundred thousand votes still to be counted. Mamdani carried 50.4% of votes to Andrew Cuomo’s 41.3% at around 9:40 p.m. The projection — which came with 75% of votes counted — also found GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa with rock-bottom 7.5%. The Uganda-born Mamdani will be the Big Apple’s first Muslim and first socialist mayor, as well as one of the youngest.

The Vatican’s doctrinal office said Tuesday the titles of “Co-Redemptrix” and “Mediatrix” are not appropriate ways to describe Mary’s participation in salvation. In “Mater Populi Fidelis” (“The Mother of the Faithful People of God”), the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) said when an expression requires frequent explanation to maintain the correct meaning, it becomes unhelpful. “In this case, the expression ‘Co-redemptrix’ does not help extol Mary as the first and foremost collaborator in the work of Redemption and grace, for it carries the risk of eclipsing the exclusive role of Jesus Christ,” according to the doctrinal note, released Nov. 4.
