Trump’s Executive Order Confronts a
Long History of Veteran Neglect

In a bold effort to confront decades of shortcomings in veteran care, President Trump recently signed an Executive Order to establish the National Center for Warrior Independence—a dedicated initiative set to be built on the Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles. With an ambitious target of housing 6,000 homeless veterans by 2028, the order also enacts sweeping reforms to reduce wait times at VA hospitals, expand virtual healthcare access, and reinstate accountability by removing employees found guilty of misconduct. Trump’s order marks a significant pivot in federal policy. It is the most comprehensive federal initiative in more than a decade aimed at combating veteran homelessness—and a long-overdue reckoning

Forty years ago while a resident at the U of Pittsburg associated VA Hospital, I listened while a lab supervisor bragged that he made the Physician Chief of the facility wait for him to show the chief who was really in charge. Right there I learned that unions in federal employment serve only to protect incompetence and misconduct.

There are a small number of VA hospitals that specialize in rehabilitating injured soldiers and veterans who have lost limbs in IED bombings, etc. These hospitals need to be better funded and even better managed to continue to perform their admirable, much-needed care. That said, most VA hospitals are underfunded, union-controlled, abysmally (and bureaucratically) managed, and staffed with sometimes second-rate physicians, largely uncaring nurses, and typically sit-and-wait-forever treatment centers for old and suffering veterans. There is an existing VA program that permits vets who reside far from VA hospitals to be treated at local hospitals and clinics at VA expense. This program needs to be greatly expanded so that vets can be treated at normal "civilian" hospitals where they are able to be treated with the same respect, at the same level of care, and with the same promptness as is offered to the general population. And the many VA hospitals that provide modestly adequate care after months and years of waiting for admission, or hours and days of waiting in waiting rooms for treatment? Those VA hospitals need to be shut down and sold.

Thank you President Trump! After he died, my Vietnam vet husband's disability status was changed, which gave me, the surviving spouse benefits and I am grateful for them. It took 9 months for ChampVa to approve the benefits and my husband died before that. Pharmacy works well, but medical records were sent last Nov/Dec. That meant to copy all records and contact all doctors for their records, which took a lot of time. I've only seen one payout so far. There is no online database to reference. You must call, which is usually at least a three hour wait. I called about two months ago. I found out, theyThe rep said they would expedite the records, but it's been over 6 months so far. I sure hope that the President's directive improves their ability to provide contact online as well as speed up the process. Like I said, I'm glad for the assistance but are they sure that the vet's medical records aren't at the back of the cave they found with retirement paperwork?

TO#8: "... treated at normal "civilian" hospitals where they are able to be treated with the same respect, at the same level of care, and with the same promptness as is offered to the general population. ..." While I agree with the thought to allow vets to go to "regular" facilities & hospitals in hopes they will be treated respectfully, same level of care, etc. as the "gen pop", please realize they may not get any better care "on the outside". Since obamacare, the gen pop has been mistreated in much the same manner as our vets. With its abysmal reimbursement rates to physicians & facilities, obmacare has taken what once was a troubled but high-functioning medical care system & turned it into a third world mess.

When the left runs out of substantive arguments, they pull out the same tired talking points. Chicago’s far-left, radical mayor, Brandon Johnson, is the latest example. During his weekly press conference, Johnson claimed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is “an act of war” and that the Trump administration is similar to “the Third Reich.” Johnson claimed Chicago is the most “pro-worker” city in the U.S., but is facing “hostility” from Washington. Johnson whined, “The fact that the President of the United States of America is cutting off food supply and medicine to working people and families across this country — that is an act of war.”

If you’re old enough to remember when Bill Clinton was president, you would recall that he was a silver-tongued, energetic politician who could fire up his supporters and excite the Democrat base—that is, at least, until he met Monica Lewinsky. There is little of that fire left in the two-term president, as he has for some time now seemed low-energy and not particularly passionate. On Sunday, however, he showed that he can still drop some all-time whoppers when the time is right. Appearing on “CBS Sunday Morning,” the former president minimized the mental decline of Joe Biden

But now we’re in the aftermath. Despite Mayor Karen Bass’ excited updates about how well it’s going, one Palisades resident begs to differ. Another Biden scandal is blowing up—this time in East Palestine, Ohio. Newly uncovered emails reveal that the Biden administration knew cancer-causing toxins may have been released into the community following a catastrophic train derailment, even as officials publicly claimed everything was under control. The disaster began on Feb. 3, 2023, when a Norfolk Southern freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed and burst into flames near the small Ohio town. Among the wreckage were five railcars filled with vinyl chloride—a highly flammable, cancer-causing chemical. Fearing an explosion, authorities ordered evacuations and carried out a so-called “controlled release,” sending a toxic plume into the air and blanketing the area in chemicals

There's been a whole lot of agita from the right-hand side about the "reconciliation bill" — the Big Beautiful Bill — that passed the House a few days ago. A lot of it is based on the CBO scoring the bill as costing $4 trillion dollars in revenue. And why does the CBO think that? Because the CBO thinks the government is entitled to all the lovely tax money that would come in when the tax cuts from Trump's first term expire. But the BBB went and extended the tax cuts. At the very start of what was supposed to be a weeklong space mission, NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore had to wonder if they’d ever make it back to the Earth’s surface. As Williams and Wilmore approached the International Space Station last year, the thrusters on their Boeing Starliner capsule gave out, leaving the spacecraft unable to move forward. When they realized they might not be able to dock on the ISS, a frightening — and as it turned out, prophetic — thought entered their minds. “If we weren’t able to dock, would we be able to make it back [to Earth]?,” Wilmore told the BBC. “We didn’t know.”

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration admitted possible cancer-causing toxins were spread in East Palestine, Ohio, following the Norfolk Southern train derailment in 2023, explosive new emails show, despite the White House insisting residents were safe. “The occurrence of a cancer-cluster in EP [East Palestine] is not zero,” FEMA recovery leader James McPherson wrote in a March 29, 2024, email to other public health officials — a little more than a year after the crash. “As you all are aware, the first 48 hours of the fire created a really toxic plume,” he said in the chain of communications, which were first reported by News Nation.

Melgar-Salmeron then lingered in detainment as the Biden administration put his case on hold. Once the Trump administration took over, they immediately sought to end the hold.
