Less than a year after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon, the Apollo program had become so routine that people didn’t really pay attention to Apollo 13 when it launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 11, 1970, at 2:13 p.m. Media coverage was sparse, and so were the crowds in attendance. “NASA was reminded again of waning interest in space exploration with a launch turnout of around 200,000 people,” Space.com recounts. “It was a crowd that paled in comparison to the 7 million who had come to see Apollo 11 liftoff almost a year earlier.”

There are two excellent books I would commend to fellow L-dotters. One is by a conservative intellectual known for other things, Charles Murray, called simply "Apollo." It is a superbly detailed description of the Apollo program from start to finish. Tremendous amount of anecdotal and interesting behind the scenes information. The second is "One Giant Leap" by Charles Fishman. In his final chair, he summarizes brilliantly how central the Apollo program was to multiple areas of subsequent American economic dominance.

An illegal alien from Guatemala has been indicted for his alleged role in smuggling a teenager into the country and “inducing” her to say she was his sister. The suspect in the case is identified as 26-year-old Juan Tiul Xi, while the victim is a 14-year-old girl who is also from Guatemala, Fox News reported on Saturday. In a press release on Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of Public Affairs said a federal grand jury indicted the suspect, who allegedly entered the United States illegally during former President Joe Biden’s (D) administration. A Democrat judge in New Mexico resigned from his bench last month after immigration agents arrested an alleged Tren de Aragua gang member living in his home. The illegal alien entered the U.S. in Eagle Pass, Texas, before being released on an immigration parole due to overcrowding. He eventually moved to New Mexico. Federal prosecutors in the District of New Mexico allege that 23-year-old Cristhian Ortega-Lopez was illegally in possession of a firearm and has ties to the hyperviolent Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump and the U.S. State Department declared the gang to be a foreign terrorist organization.

Raymundo Juan Reyes Cornelio, 19, was arrested for the rape of a child on April 11 by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. It seems clear to me that the broad scope and speed of the administration’s actions have knocked the sense out of the media, the Democrats and, alas, the judiciary. They cannot seem to process the swift and expansive range of change without making themselves look ridiculous. The Press I could describe many examples but the easiest most complete one is that of the gang banger, wife beating, human trafficking suspect Salvadorean citizen who illegally crossed out borders and resided here. If you think politicians make outlandish claims, consider what Christians celebrate at Easter. They believe a man named Jesus was brutally tortured, murdered, and buried for three days before rising from the dead. Furthermore, they assert this man was also fully God and that your belief or lack of belief in him determines your eternal destiny. Christians have no video evidence or DNA tests to prove this. That’s understandable since Christians say the event Easter celebrates took place almost 2,000 years ago. Americans can’t even agree on things that happened two weeks ago. Isn’t Easter an ancient example of “fake news,” a myth propagated by people putting faith over historical realities?

And it works… about 75% of the time. Alas, the future is stubbornly indifferent to the plans of today. People are mostly predictable, but black swan events still happen. Every now and then, a researcher in Wuhan will be dissecting bats and forget to wash her hands. Or a political speech in Butler, Penn. will be disrupted with gunshots. Life is crazy. It’ll never be fully predictable.

The Supreme Court on April 19 temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting an unspecified number of Venezuelan men currently in immigration custody who are alleged to be members of a criminal gang. The new, unsigned order granting the Venezuelans’ emergency application was issued on Saturday at about 12:55 a.m. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented. Alito’s reasoning will be added to the court’s file later, according to the order. “The Government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this Court” the order states.
