California’s fast food industry shed more than 6,000 jobs after Democratic lawmakers passed a bill mandating a $20 minimum wage for most fast food and counter service restaurants in the state, according to a new analysis of labor data.
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that between September 2023, when California governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1228, and June 2024, Golden State fast food employment dropped from 570,909 jobs to 564,743. That’s a loss of 6,166 jobs, or 1.1 percent, according to an analysis by the nonprofit Employment Policies Institute.

Exactly as predicted.
And a bunch of workers discover that the minimum wage is NOT $20, it is $0....when your company can no longer afford you. They could have continued at $12 or whatever, but when forced to $20....they revert to $0.
A lesson there, but most will not see it or learn it.

If the quality and service were worth it they may stand a chance.
I go only to small family owned places now.
I never see lines at drive-thrus during lunch any more.

If you think Newsome cares, you’d be dead wrong. He couldn’t care less about people who can’t donate millions to his account.

The price of a burger and fries has gotten out-of-hand. Many were warned that it would. Don't expect to make a "career" out of flipping burgers on the grill. Now the electorate sheep, Baa Baa, are shocked while they devour $4 fries.

#2 We tend to go to bars / pubs in small towns. We can get a couple hamburgers, fries and a beer for under $20. Can't get that at MickeyD's and they don't serve beer :)

Californians. They couldn't even get Slick recalled. They constantly vote for more taxes upon themselves and their fellow citizens. They want Schiff. They ignore the homelessness and violent crime that is all around them. The lucky and prepared have already moved away forever. The only Californians I feel for are the desperate ones who want to leave but can't.

California Dems perfected the art of election cheating. Between illegals and ballots printed in China, the Dems win every recount and any 'close' elections.

When a 16 piece bucket of just chicken is over $40, its not just expensive, its an insult. I wont pay it. Hope their clerks enjoy having nothing to do until the layoff.

Remember those covid-year "relief" checks that everybody was sent, whether they asked or not? Some places in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia are already experimenting with building those into their governmental framework -- i.e. turning openly Socialist.
So if this mandate forces many to be laid off, for their employer's inability to pay everybody over $29 an hour, no worries, mate -- just live on the government's dime (never mind that the money comes from taxes paid for by people who aren't out of work).

This new law could be called "The Full Robots Employment Act." You remember that famed internet video of those dancing robots in Boston? Well, now they will be dancing in many a California McDonald's.
