Tucker Carlson — swinging for the fences these days, apparently in the midst of some mid-career crisis, released from the confines of corporate state media after many long decades adjacent to, if not a bona fide member of, the establishment — had some fighting words for online DeSantis supporters.Via Yahoo! News:
Tucker Carlson has ripped in to Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign team as the “nastiest, stupidest” political operation he has ever seen.
Mr Carlson also blamed the Florida Governor’s flip-flop on opposition to Ukraine funding after being pressured by top GOP donor Ken Griffin during a live debate with podcaster Tim Pool at

Ridiculous piece; the excerpt from New York Magazine was particularly so IMO.

Part of the problem with DeSantis people, is they weren't DeSantis people - they were anti-Trump people who latched onto Ron to oppose Trump. He was just convenient.
And as usually happens, they then poisoned things between two men who should be allies. They both want the same end-game: A Prosperous America. They don't like each other, and that's cool. That's Humanity. I don't know if I could be friends with Trump, but I respect him, greatly. I don't know if I could be friends with DeSantis, but I respect him as well. Their work doesn't clash, but the media and possibly their separate advisors push for that drama.
America, first, guys...
They both need to stop the personality bullshit, and focus on America.

A year or two ago we were all cheering DeSantis on, and saying what a great guy he was. Now, somehow, he has become the devil incarnate. What has changed? Someone took the consultants and hatchet men off their leashes.

Amateurish mistakes and lack of patience is what bit Ron on the butt. It all could have been avoided by waiting another four years.

Wow, Ben. Perhaps Tucker’s musings on DeSantis’ supporters hit a little too close to home?

DeSantis was either too stupid to know that the 2020 election was in fact a coup de ta or he did not care. Either way…

Liar. Tucker said DeSantis' social media influencers were the stupid ones. They are not supporters. They are employees.

DeSantis' problem is that he was seen by many powerful people as the tool that they could use to stop Trump. So, a bunch of people who had zero interest in DeSantis as he is, DeSantis the person, climbed onto his campaign, many bringing big bags of money and then dictating to DeSantis items of policy that he must support to get that money.
And DeSantis, really literally only half baked as a politician, didn't have the full range of policy positions fully "baked" into his political agenda. He was whipsawed by people who weren't "DeSantis supporters" as much as they were "DeSantis puppeteers". And DeSantis, unlike Joe, didn't make a good puppet.
DeSantis may never recover, even though as the half baked and GOOD politician running his state of Florida, he was excellent at that level. He hadn't yet made the leap to a statesman capable of dealing with the larger issues of a COUNTRY, and had missing pieces of policy, which were filled in by his wouldbe puppeteers. And puppeteers get angry if the puppet doesn't do what they say, and the puppet looks herky jerky as it tries to answer to the puppeteer and sometimes do his own actions.

#10 makes a good point. While I think "half-baked" has connotations which are inappropriate as applied to DeSantis, the idea that his ideas on many policy issues which came up in a presidential campaign were incompletely formed. In an effort to complete those ideas, DeSantis listened to people he thought were supporters, who were in fact auditioning to be puppeteers. This led to DeSantis taking positions on some issues which were incompatible with the desires of his potential supporters. All of this led to more enmity between DeSantis and Trump than there should have been.
Personally, I think DeSantis should have run his campaign as, "If you want Donald Trump: GREAT!! But if you would prefer a younger alternative who pursues the same America First agenda, I offer myself as your candidate." Basically, he should have mildly supported Trump while offering himself as an alternative for those who thought Trump had too much baggage. Perhaps spending a little time on the fact that he had built a team loyal to him to run his administration so as to avoid Trump's biggest problem: deputies who opposed his agenda.

DeSantis should have been smarter than to get played by people who didn't care about him except as an instrument they could use to rid themselves of Trump. I'm speaking primarily of the Bush wing of Vichy Republicans. It doesn't say much about DeSantis' judgement that he didn't see through them. Maybe he did, and thought he could use their money and not be beholden to them. Whatever went on, the hot mess that resulted doesn't speak well of DeSantis' judgement. Had he waited until 2028, he'd have probably won the nomination with little or no effort. Instead, he's dog meat now that his "friends" have turned to Nikki Haley.

To back up what others have said, Tucker is referring to a very specific group -- the so-called Twitter army of DeSantis "influencers," social-media mavens run by Christina Pushaw, DeSantis' erstwhile press secretary and for the past year a prominent part of his campaign leadership. The "influencers" have not been so influential, and are probably a significant factor in What Went Wrong with the DeSantis campaign, going all the way back to last spring. They attack Trump and his supporters relentlessly, and
their vitriol has colored how some potential DeSantis voters came to view him.
Ben Bartee no doubt knows all of this. He is being very disingenuous in characterizing Tucker as criticizing DeSantis supporters in general. I saw the podcast panel -- Tucker was referring to the Pushaw group, who I believe are in the employ of the campaign, not simply DeSantis fans or supporters.
