Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis cut staff from his 2024 presidential campaign as he struggles both in fundraising and gaining traction in 2024 Republican primary polls against former President Donald Trump. DeSantis' campaign cut less than 10 staffers last week, people familiar with the matter told Politico and The New York Times. This is roughly 10% of his campaign staff in the second quarter, when he spent more than $1 million on payroll, insurance and related fees for about 90 staffers.

Poster, consider this:
If something happens to Trump, do you want to have to vote for Chris Christie or Asa Hutchinson? We need more than one good choice.

De Santis is not offering himself as a substitute for President Trump - - he is trying to replace him.
De Santis didn't say that he would run only if President Trump is not available. President Trump is very much willing and available. De Santis should be ashamed of himself for biting the hand which fed him. But people with monstrous egos don't have that type of shame.

The comments above are both good.
In view of the rolling coup, though, i think we need/needed something other than politics as usual.
I don’t understand the process or desantis’ or his backers’ plan.
I would have liked from him a strong statement that he was backing Trump because the system is corrupted and there must be change, even if desantis wanted to add “even though Trump may be a flawed candidate.”
This is true at least in the perception of a lot of republicans. To remove Trump from the ballot by any means - the DoJ or republican primaries- gives validation to The Establishment’s narrative that “trump is so bad any means is justified.”
Then, if for whatever reason Trump is not available i think Republicans would rally to someone else in those circumstances.
We are in emergency conditions.

DeSantis should go the distance. If Trump looks unbeatable, foul play by the treasonous ‘Rats is a distinct possibility.

No one, not even Trump, is entitled to the nomination.
That so many on this board are scrambling to bury Ron DeSantis six months before the contests even start is somewhat revealing. If the country is indeed chomping at the bit, eagerly awaiting the Return of the Donald, then why be afraid of some halfway serious competition along the way? Do not those who train champion prizefighters warm their men up by having them fight a few tomato cans in preparation for the big bout?
What are so many people so afraid of?
Perhaps DeSantis believes (as I do) that Trump cannot win the general election, rendering talk of sitting back and waiting for 2028 meaningless.

Agree with OP. If I may add: I’m hugely disappointed in DeS judgment.
Why run NOW? You committed to Florida when you were elected, but all of a sudden you have to stop and run for President? Your talking points are almost identical to PDJT. You would have had overwhelming support in 2028.
Now, we can’t be sure. You appear to be headed to the “Pence column” of Has Beens.

No one is saying the President Trump is “entitled” to the nomination but Ron clearly isn’t ready to take him on. Part of me thinks he was encouraged to run to take him out now do they don’t let him develop into a strong candidate for 2028. They being the deep state sewer.

Trump is right again. Desantis should go home and do the job he was elected to do in florida. Stand strong with trump to save america and correct the coup of 2020 by getting trump in office.

So now MAGA voters who refuse to dump Trump for the new shiny toy are pushing that President Trump is “entitled?” I heard that talking point on MESSNBC. I will not act like GOP party hacks and trash a POTUS who despite odds and GOP betrayals accomplished more for my country and my family than both Bushes put together.

Here’s a question. Let’s say DeSantis did wait “his turn” and isn’t running. Who, of the other candidates running, would get your vote and we’d win, if something happens to Trump?

# 10, I do not dispute Trump's accomplishments as president. His narrow win over Hitlery in 2016 was a godsend. But public perceptions (largely driven by the garbage media) have hardened and I don't see any path to 270 electoral votes for The Donald in 2024, Gratitude for what he did for us is not enough in the cold, by-the-numbers world of electoral politics.
And as a party the GOP - despite its flaws the only serious conservative voice in the country - needs to adapt to changing conditions and people.

Thank you for a kind explanation of what you meant, #12. I understand and I know you did not mean anything personal.

Thank you for your reply, # 13. You and I have been posting on this board for a long time, and I know that we are as one in concern for our country. However things shake down, we are in the same boat. Many people I admire insist that prayer helps - I am trying to give that a go. God bless.

I don't think I've ever been more disappointed with a politician - - than I've been with De Santis. He could have enthusiastically supported the man to whom he owes his job - - President Trump - - and then run for president in 2028 - - when he would still be under fifty years old. But his overwhelming ego and ambition blinded him to how badly he would be received - - and tarnished him forever in the minds of freedom-loving Americans. His decision to run against President Trump - - was a worse one than putting a fake transsexual on a BudLite can.
