WASHINGTON— A judge on Friday awarded more than $1 million to a Black church in downtown Washington, D.C. that sued the far-right Proud Boys for tearing down and burning a Black Lives Matter banner during a 2020 protest.
Superior Court Associated Judge Neal A. Kravitz also barred the extremist group and its leaders from coming near the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church or making threats or defamatory remarks against the church or its pastor
“Our courage and determination to fight back in response to the 2020 attack on our church is a beacon of hope for our community and today’s ruling showed us what our collective vision and voice can achieve,”

Burning the Stars and Stripes is free speech.
Why isn’t this?

I wonder what the Catholic churches will get from "Jane's Revenge" for all of the vandalism after the Dobbs decision? They, and the crisis pregnancy centers, should really make a mint.

How much will BLM have to cough up for the months of riots in 2020? That judge should have forced them to pay for the damage to St. John’s Church and a whole lot more.

Interfering with someone else's speech isn't free. But how do we know this wasn't done by some paid FBI instigators?

Seems to me, If I remember correctly...Proud boys agreed to show up and have a street fight with Antifa/Blm members, at THEIR request. BLM/Antifa had been physically attacking other/older, 100% peaceful groups who had legally/legitimately pulled permits to hold marches and gatherings and Proud Boys started as a buffer group to defend them. They met, they rumbled, the lefties got whupped, then ran and hid in this church..."Sanctuary".
It wasn't an "Attack" on the church in any way.

What was the BLM/Antifa fine for lighting the entire CHURCH on fire across from the Whitehouse, the "Church of the Presidents"?

Kravitz... Kravitz. "Before joining the bench, Judge Kravitz worked for fifteen years as a civil rights lawyer, public defender, and Senate staffer. He held positions with the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice, the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, the New Hampshire Public Defender, and the Senate POW/MIA and Whitewater Committees. Judge Kravitz is a graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School." So we know what his political positions are. Irish? Polish? Italian? Greek? I wonder what Yeshiva he attended.

Re #4, because it is a totalitarian thug "judge" in DC. I expect that upon appeal, this gets dumped. If not, it is a perfect case for the SCOTUS to take.
Clearly free speech, or at worst, minor 'vandalism' charge, which they would be guilty of, it would seem, but that's more like $500 fine.

Frankly I am disgusted at the thought of a Black Church. As opposed to what ? A White Church, a Yellow Church, a Red Church, A Green Church ? Sick.

Only in Washington DC. Anyone from the right going to court there is automatically guilty/.

Agree with #1. We ought to see a First Amendment case from this.
Technically, however, if I remember right, you can burn a flag if you own it, it's not someone else's property.

Burning your own flag is free speech.
Burning anything owned by someone else is vandalism or arson.
But this should have been a $500 fine or something for petty vandalism.

If you bring the American flag, that’s permitted as free-speech, however if you burn a gay flag or a BLM flag, that’s a hate crime. Can you believe this crap?

I don't think a judge has the authority to dole out penalties outside of legally established parameters. Cost of the flag - I can see that. Damages to harmed individuals (if there were any) I can see that. If in a civil trial by jury, where the plaintiffs have specified a reward and the jury agrees.
But by a judge? Overreach.

How about the church donating that money to restore some of the damage BLM did to your city? Anyone supporting a terrorist organization should not receive a penny from the government. If Black Lives Matter so much where are the billions donated to the cause ? All that cash that flowed in did nothing for the average black community. Seems it was used to buy properties for the people running the organization, but I’ll give you this, it costs to destroy cities, businesses and government buildings. Remember all those pallets of bricks that were strategically positioned just where they were needed to be used as weapons. Those kinds of tools of anarchy must be pricey.

A VERY expensive piece of cloth!!
Unless the Black church can demonstrate fire damage and banner replacement anywhere near that $1-million, this ruling will be overturned

Good grief, why can't commenters read - it wasn't THEIR flag. They stole it and destroyed it. That is illegal, no matter what is stolen and destroyed.
Yes, you can burn your OWN flag, no problem. Any flag.
But not $1 million worth.
