Members of Congress collected more than $800,000 in salary during the chamber’s protracted speaker fight — during a period when they technically were not members.
The pols officially become members of Congress — leaving behind the title of Rep.-Elect — when they are sworn in by the Speaker of the House. The event usually takes place on Jan. 3, the Constitutionally mandated start of each new Congress.
Even re-elected incumbents must be sworn back in every two years for their “member” status to be current.

If they were not legally members
they could not legally vote.
They could not legally receive payment.
Just like if mail-in ballots are unconstitutional,
mail-in ballot votes are illegal.
People have to stop pretending that illegal doesn't matter.

This sort of tediousness is uninteresting. I don't care which party has taken control or anything else like that. They're elected, they're there doing the job they were elected to do.
They just burned 1.7 trillion dollars we don't have including over 100 billion for Ukrainian corruption and this guy is worried about paying people for showing up in DC to do their jobs?
Good grief!

What is needed is an amendment to our Constitution that Congress can only be in session 2 months out of every year. Once in the Spring and once in the fall and they get paid by the hour. They can get reimbursed for hotel, flight to and from home, and rental car expenses. This is a necessary and desperately needed reform. The founders of our country never envisioned a full time Congress who betray there country and us every single day of the year. This includes communist death democrats and stealth communist death republicans. If this amendment was enacted a stampede of Representatives and Senators resigning from Congress would start immediately.
Time to reign in these commie/deep swamp leeches who are only in it for power and especially filthy lucre.

And that’s a small price to pay for the progress made during those five days! May save taxpayers billions, if not trillions in the end.

The electeds in Washington do too darn much. They need to be very part-time and work from home. They get at least six weeks off in the summer, not to mention all the holidays, personal vacation days, and shutdowns, etc. Matt G. said they have days when they vote on one item. If they're salaried employees, they should be spending time with their constituents in their home states. They don't answer their own emails and letters. They spend more time hating and hurting us than helping us. Give me just one day.

There they go again, that Murdoch family. Another article slamming MAGA Republicans. And this writer, whomever he is, Jon Levine?, is complaining about $800,000 of taxpayer money being wasted? I cannot think of a more beneficial use for my taxpayer money than to have that scene at the House, members actually publicly talking about issues that will make our country stronger, during that fight for Speaker. BTW, Jon, instead of playing with their fingers or other parts of their anatomy during the Speakership fight, democrats should have been listening and watching to see what democracy is really about. Not just blindly voting in lockstep to install the very leftist and intellectually challenged, Hakeem Jeffries, over and over again. Instead, they should have been assessing and thinking about and ultimately voting for what was best for their constituents and the country.
What a stupid article. The NY Post should be ashamed of itself. But then, the Murdochs are dragging that once great newspaper down the swamp to dwell in the muck with the NY Times and the WAPO.

Let’s move on, Levine. The questiion about why they were able to vote for Speaker has been answered. It was worth it;

$813,000 over 5 days is an hourly rounding error where the federal budget is concerned. The federal government spends 7 million every minute of every day. Heck....800K probably wouldn't cover Pelosi's alcohol tab.

Re #2, they were duly elected. The swearing in is ceremonial. That has been explained elsewhere along with the fact that all duly elected repesentatives can vote for speaker. Relax. Or are you a Dem?

I don't remember Nanzi handing her big gavel over to McCarthy. Did I miss the fun?

About Jon Levine from his own Post bio:
"A native New Yorker, he previously worked as a media reporter for TheWrap and Mediaite. His work has been featured on CNN.com, The Atlantic, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. When he’s not working, he’s thinking about work”
.
In addition to being all over Rep.Santos, who will have to be dealt with by the voters, he published a barnburner article about Biden’s losing a golf ball in St. Croix on NY Eve.

Re #12, Nancy didn’t hand over the speaker’s gavel because she’d already resigned the speakership. The clerk of the House gave McCarthy the gavel. In the wee small hours of the morning.
