New York - New York City Mayor Eric Adams says the NYPD, FDNY, and other city agencies will start forcing homeless people who are determined to be suffering a "mental health crisis" off the streets and out of the subway system. They will be taken to a hospital for evaluation even if they refuse to go on their own.
Adams says, "It is appropriate to use this process when a person refuses voluntary assistance and it appears that they are suffering from mental illness and are a danger to themselves due to an inability to meet their basic needs. We believe this is the first time

Jeepers, remember those bad old days when first responders did this exact thing. Remember how bad things were? Less bums on the street, less crime. All those things that make cities safe, you know. And then a judge, one single judge ruled it was unconstitutional. So now we are back to doing unconstitutional things cause a black robed demigod's idea of Nirvana is deadly to the rest of the citizenry. One wonders what other black robed demigod laws are too screwed up for civilization to survive?

This will go nowhere. "Advocates" for the homeless will spring them within 48 hours. Hospitals will give them a few pills and release them, over and over again. Courts will rule the homeless have the right to live wherever they want to.

If one of NY's homeless people decides to visit the subway and push riders off the platform onto the tracks, and that person is arrested, Cuomo's "No Bail" law requires judges to release that homeless mental case back onto the streets. Using this new development, maybe the nut house can hold them for long enough to get these people back on their meds. They are often a genuine danger to society, even if their mental state lets them skate on punishment.

Early in his reign of terror, the "mentally ill" were the first group pegged for extermination by Hitler in Germany in order to "cleanse" the society of anyone "less" than his ideal Arian superhumans.
Of course, "mental illness" included people who openly opposed the Nazification of Germany.
People who forget history are doomed to repeat it -- at least in lie-beral strongholds!!!

And then what? In the olden days there were facilities that were literally called 'the Lunatic Asylum'. Dangerous people were kept off the streets. Those days are long gone.

In some places, not the USA yet, just refusing the covid jabs qualifies you for a mental health evaluation.
Then you probably get tranq'ed enough to refuse the jab.

About time. We spent two years against our will in lockdowns vax cards to eat in a restaurant and mass firings.
You are not doing the homeless a favor to let them live in their own filth ranting in the streets with the medication or counciling they need.
So called advocates for the homeless advocate to keep them homeless that’s the advocates meal ticket.

Be careful about applauding this. This resembles the red flag laws. Police are not necessarily trained to recognize mental illness and could apply this to anyone. If it only applies to the homeless it is unconstitutional.

Back in the olden days, say the '50s and '60s, the insane were placed in asylums, with or without their consent. Life in there may have been grim but certainly more humane and comfortable than the floor of a subway station or under cardboard out in the freezing cold. And the rest of us "normal people" were safe and protected from abuse by societies unfortunate folks. It's not often I applaud His Honor Adams, but I do give him credit for trying this approach.

I would definitely not want to be the first cop to do as Captain America, Eric Adams advises on this one, let him do it

The standard in most states for taking such involuntary action is that the subject must clearly present a "danger to himself/herself/theyself or others." "Theyself" is not actually included in statute language, at least not yet, but is in keeping with the spirit of non-binary, inclusive pronouns.

I watched the Eastwood movie a few years ago called The Changeling starring Angelina Jolie. Based on a true story that happened back in the late 20's or early 30's in the LA area, one of the things that the cops could do was involuntarily commit somebody who they personally had problems with. Like bothersome mistresses, any parent who challenged the cops, and so on. This is going to come around and bite decent people hard if NYC goes through with this. Democrats just cannot help themselves.
