If you’ve been following the political chatter for the last month or so, one common theme being pushed by the press and data nerd Twitter is the idea of a Democrat “comeback” before the mid-terms. Historically, every headwind is against Joe Biden and his party, but as the story goes, things will be different this time. After all, the Democrats passed the “Inflation Reduction Act” that doesn’t actually reduce inflation, and Democrats have taken some leads on the generic ballot since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Florida school board elections have been a major political battleground this cycle, with big names like Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and Rep. Byron Donalds (R) making endorsements and joining the campaign trail. While primary elections occurred in Florida, New York, and Oklahoma Tuesday, Florida has general elections for school boards, meaning the winners will be the official members of the boards.
Houston, Texas — The governor and state comptroller of Texas took steps on Tuesday to force Harris County to reinstate millions of dollars stripped from the county’s constable offices or face consequences. The action comes after two constables’ offices filed complaints regarding the police-defunding action taken the county’s commissioners court.
Harris County Commissioners Court implemented a policy to stop constables from automatically rolling over funds from one fiscal year to the next, Fox 26 reported. The policy change resulted in the movement of more than $3 million from law enforcement funds to the general fund.

His life mattered. I met David while I worked retail security, where he moonlighted when not working his main job as a police officer. A federal judge convicted two men on Tuesday of conspiring in 2020 to kidnap Democratic Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer.
The two men, Adam Fox and Barry Croft, face a maximum sentence of life in prison for the kidnapping conspiracy, and were also charged with one count of conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction.
Defense attorneys claimed that the men were entrapped by government undercover agents and informants to go through the kidnapping scheme.

Federal government officials have recovered hundreds of classified documents from former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida since he left office, according to a new report.
The initial trove of documents the National Archives and Records Administration collected in January included over 150 documents with classified markings, and seizures in June and in August brought the total up to more than 300, sources told the New York Times. In January, following weeks of communication with Trump's team, the National Archives retrieved 15 boxes of presidential documents before discovering classified material and referring the matter to the Justice Department, which opened an investigation.

Former president Donald Trump filed a lawsuit Monday requesting the appointment of a special master to review the items seized by the FBI during the raid of his Mar-a-Lago residence.
The suit, marking the first legal action Trump has taken over the raid, calls for the review of the seized materials to be stopped until the watchdog is appointed, and for the FBI to return all items not in the scope of the search warrant.
FBI agents seized photos, handwritten notes and the former president’s passports — materials that were not in the search warrant — according to the filing issued by Trump’s attorneys in federal court in Florida.
A federal magistrate judge formally rejected the Justice Department’s bid to keep the affidavit leading to the FBI raid of Trump’s personal residence at Mar-a-Lago completely sealed, noting the “unprecedented” nature of the search and the “intense public and historical interest.”
U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, who signed off on the initial search warrant for the raid, issued a 13-page ruling on Monday morning finding the DOJ had not provided a strong enough argument for “keeping the entire Affidavit under seal.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul has a whopping 24-point lead over Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin with 11 weeks to go before Election Day, according to a new poll released Tuesday.
The incumbent Democrat had 55% support among likely voters in the poll conducted between Aug. 17 and Aug. 22 by SurveyUSA on behalf of WNYT-TV in Albany. Another 31% backed Zeldin and 14% said they were undecided.
There was some good news for Zeldin in the survey, with 33% of voters saying battling inflation was the most important issue when it comes to deciding their vote for governor. Health care and criminal justice reform were a distant second on 12% each.
As my colleague Brandon Morse reported, President Joe Biden is about to blatantly break the law to “cancel” thousands of dollars of student loan debt accrued by some of the most privileged members of society. Of course, nothing will actually be canceled. Instead, because the government will simply be out that money, the burden of those debts will be transferred from those who accrued them to hundreds of millions of taxpayers who didn’t.

When I was an undergraduate in the late 1960s, I underwent a kind of transformative experience during a classroom debate with another student that I believed I was clearly winning when the philosophy professor corrected me. He reminded me that when engaged in a philosophical debate, as opposed to the 9th grade Debating Challenge, the point is not simply to vanquish one’s opponent but to find the truth. In order to do the former one may use any means fair or foul to destroy the opponent. For the latter one must do the exact opposite and represent one’s opponent’s position in the strongest terms possible.

Wade reversal — the opening sentence of their recent op-ed published in The New York Times is, “When liberals lose at the Supreme Court — as they increasingly have over the past half-century” — two Ivy League professors laid out their claims for an America without Constitutional limitations. They suggest, “the way to seek real freedom will be to use procedures consistent with popular rule.” Of course, the piece is polished sewage: tyranny of the majority is a very real, and very dangerous threat to the individual, (perhaps they should go read Federalist 10, but they likely wouldn’t understand that either).
