For about 70 years, the definition of a recession has been simple: Two straight quarters of negative GDP growth. Everyone who has taken an Economics 101 class was taught the same thing, and until recently, there has been no argument on the matter.
In fact, the only time in modern history where two-straight quarters of negative growth didn’t define a recession was at the beginning of George W. Bush’s term. In that case, a single quarter of negative growth was used as the deciding point. (Tweet)

he Federal Reserve will release its newest policy statement on Wednesday afternoon, and is expected to hike its key interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point to battle high inflation.
As economic growth sputters, the central bank is caught in an awkward dance as it attempts to tamp down inflation with higher rates without tipping the country into a recession.
Markets will be carefully watching Fed Chair Jerome Powell's press conference at 2.30pm for signs of how aggressive the central bank is prepared to move against inflation at its next meeting in September.

U.S. officials today said they have little fear that China could attack Nancy Pelosi's plane if she flies to Taiwan as Beijing doubled down on their threat to take 'firm and strong measures' if the House speaker visits the island.
If Pelosi does travel to Taiwan, which is still an uncertainty, the U.S. military would increase its movement of forces and assets in the Indo-Pacific region, officials said.
The officials declined to provide details of their plans, but said that fighter jets, ships, surveillance assets and other military systems would likely be used to provide overlapping rings of protection for her flight to Taiwan

President Joe Biden is free to emerge from isolation after testing negative for COVID-19.
Biden felt "well enough" on Tuesday "to resume his physical exercise regime," according to White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor. Biden's pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and temperature were "absolutely normal," in addition to his lungs being "clear," O'Connor wrote in his Tuesday note to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre shared with reporters.
Jean-Pierre could not provide details on Tuesday regarding what physical activities Biden undertook, nor what he and his health team were doing to mitigate the risk of so-called "long COVID"

The Biden administration’s drive to link the provision of federal school lunch money to compliance with gender identity ideology was challenged Tuesday by 22 states saying they would take the matter to court.
As Breitbart News reported, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) last month announced in order for schools to receive funds for student lunches, breakfasts, and other food items, they must comply with its interpretation of the ban on discrimination based on sex in Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and other food-related programs, which includes sexual orientation and gender identity.

Democratic leaders on Tuesday touted Chicago’s diversity, ability to attract union-friendly jobs and “unified leadership” in their pitch to secure the 2024 Democratic National Convention — despite an intramural feud over who should lead the state’s own party apparatus.
DNC Chair Jaime Harrison’s visit to Chicago comes as U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly faces opposition as chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois, with advisers to Gov. J.B Pritzker and Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch recruiting state Rep. Elizabeth Hernandez, D-Cicero, to replace her.

From 1860 to 2000, in the largest legal migration in human history, over 61 million immigrants arrived in the United States. They were not only escaping poverty and oppression, but they were eager to assimilate and attain the most sought-after national status in the world: American citizenship. Today in the 21st century, American citizenship and its one-of-a-kind written contract with the central government, the Constitution with its Bill of Rights, is under relentless assault by the nation’s governing establishment and teetering on the edge of meaninglessness. (Photo) No nation can maintain its status as a nation without secure and identifiable borders. Citizenship means nothing if untold millions

Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz pressed the State Department’s chief Diversity and Inclusion officer Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley over an email allegedly excluding “straight, white men” and people of the wrong religion from being hired.
The senator argued Tuesday that the department’s Equity Action Plan, which changed hiring practices at the agency, is “nothing more than brazen discrimination.” An email from a senior department official described reports from candidates claiming to be denied a position for having a disability or for classifying as “white men, straight white men, [or] not [being] of the right religion.”

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia — Former President Donald Trump dedicated most of his keynote address at AFPI’s America First Agenda Summit on Tuesday to crime, one of the main issues facing Americans across the country.
During his speech, Trump said public safety is one of the “core issues” facing the country. “There is no higher priority than cleaning up our streets, controlling our borders, stopping the drugs from pouring in, and quickly restoring law and order,” he said.
“In the Democrat rule, in Democrat-run cities, Democrat-run states, and a Democrat-run federal government, the criminals have been given free rein more than ever before,” the former president said.

A bug-eyed Joe Biden barely blinked, perhaps twice, toward the end of a choppily spliced video of an 11 minute long speech released by the White House on Monday that featured a subdued, sleepy-eyed Biden blinking normally at the beginning but ended with a suddenly changed, agitated, bug-eyed Biden after an abrupt edit. There are at least ten spliced edits in the video, some coming seconds apart, others minutes apart.

Chris Cuomo denied any wrongdoing in his first television interview since being canned from CNN last year over his role in advising his older brother, Andrew Cuomo, throughout the then-governor’s sexual harassment sandal.
“I never lied and there were no secrets,” the former prime-time anchor told Dan Abrams in an interview set to air Tuesday night on NewsNation.
Chris Cuomo said he learned a lot about himself during the scandal and lead-up to his firing in a clip from his upcoming interview.
“I have been obsessed with what happened, when what was known, and there are a lot of facts that are going to come out,” he said.
