New York Times columnist Margaret Renkl may be based in Nashville, but she’s as contemptuous of Trumpers and Red Staters as any of the paper’s Manhattan-based writers, as shown in her latest self-important trashing of an American holiday: “The American Flag Belongs to Me, Too, and This Year I’m Taking It Back.” She reminisced how in her younger days, “We were all proud to be Americans, even if we didn’t agree about which aspects of our sprawling, messy democracy merited pride.” Not anymore though, with Old Glory now hijacked by the Red Staters, in all their irredeemable tackiness. Another month, another outsize interest rate hike.
The Federal Reserve raised its key short-term rate by three-quarters of a percentage point for a second straight month Wednesday in a bid to corral soaring inflation, matching the largest increase since 1994.
It puts the federal funds rate – which is what banks charge each other for overnight loans – at a range of 2.25% to 2.5%, close to the Fed’s 2.5% long-run, or neutral rate. That’s the rate intended to neither stimulate nor curtail economic growth. In recent months, Fed Chair Powell has said the central bank must “move expeditiously” to that neutral level and then likely beyond it
The Department of Justice has begun investigating former President Donald Trump as part of a criminal probe surrounding January 6th and his attempt to “overturn the election.” According to the Washington Examiner, questions are being asked about what Trump said in meetings around the time, including what he may have told others to do in regards to stopping the certification of the election results. Returning to Washington, D.C., for the first time since leaving office, former president Trump delivered a speech at the America First Policy Institute on Tuesday in which he accused the Democratic party of abdicating its responsibility to preserve law and order and promised that Republicans would pursue a laundry list of “brutally tough” solutions to crack-down on the “insanity” taking root in America’s cities.

Walmart issued a profit warning Monday, cautioning that its second-quarter operating income would be lower than expected and would show a decline of about 13 percent. The announcement quickly caused other major US retailers’ stocks to plunge, wiping out over $100 billion in stock market value in after-hours trading. I recently wrote a column about why I believed Trump should not run in 2024. I was wrong. I allowed my distaste for Trump’s personality to override his virtues, which are considerable. Some people want Trump without his vices. I was among them -- until yesterday, when I watched and listened to Tom Klingenstein’s speech titled “Trump’s virtues.” It was masterful and shamed me that I did not make the distinction between Trump's character and his virtues, the former being deeply flawed, the latter being almost perfect. I need to man up in my defense of the former President's virtues.
