They’re not handing out any participation trophies here.A Mississippi woman was fighting tears after her son’s school allegedly “shamed” him by giving the teen a “zero” award in class. Her saga detailing the cruel and unusual punishment is sending shockwaves online.“I think it was so horrible for him to get this award,” Patricia Buckley told local ABC outlet WAPT of the scholastic scarlet letter, which she said her son Bradley, 14, received from a teacher at the Leake Central Junior High School in Leake County. The distraught mom said she first realized something was awry after she picked Bradley up from school and noticed that the award certificate

I got a zero in a fractions test in grade school in the early-60's. The teacher berated me, the (b-word).
I survived, and after 50+ years of therapy, they tell me that I'm making great progress.

I'm more curious as to why she gave him that particular award. Was he a bad student. Did he misbehave in class. Did he not do the work required? Or was it a personal comment the teacher was making to a student she didn't like. Lots more going on here, I think.

You don't have to give every kid an award. But if you go out of your way to give a kid an insulting award, you have a mean streak and a sadistic character far more dangerous than that of the kid you're out to hurt.

What the heck is wrong with American teachers these days?? Perhaps it's time that teachers who belong to the trashy dem party should not be given a position as teachers any longer. In any school. Let them look for positions in pure dem schools. It would not surprise me if those schools would turn out only moron kids while the schools without dem teachers would have nice, intelligent kids! Just a thought. But I guess even Santa can't arrange that.

FTA: When asked what “The Zero Award” was for, the parent responded: “I don’t know. That’s why I called the superintendent’s office to find out.”
What does the “Zero Award” recognize? Anyone know. Its citation is meaningless.

End of the year "awards" (many of them nonsense awards like "so and so had the biggest smile") might work in an elementary setting but in middle school the kids are too old. If everyone gets an award then the awards really don't mean anything. For God's sake give the "participation trophies" a rest. These kids have been raised believing they are all "so special", "can never do anything wrong", "merit means nothing but self esteem means everything" and all that other garbage that is spewed. Time to grow up and realize that the world is big, and bad, and a hell of a lot is not going to be easy. Wimps totally unable to handle disappointment on every level.

Instead of an award he could roll it up into a cone and write "DUNCE" on it, and make it a hat. Back when such things were done our schools provided a far superior education. Standardized test scores have dropped consistently for generations now.

Did he EARN a zero?
If so, shut up, and get the kid to study.

What kind of award do we present to a writer who created this sentence fragment: "The pupil’s teacher — who is reportedly in their first year of instructing — " ? In what grade is grammar being taught?

I got an award once for being so hung-over (really, still drunk) from the night before... that I puked during band practice. The award was for staying in ranks, at attention, until released.
The embarrassment didn't do me any harm. I learned something from the event.
40 years later, I still keep that trophy on a shelf. :)

Humiliation has no place in teaching or parenting. It's just cruelty.
Teacher shod be fired in front of the entire school.

I agree with the mother. Humiliating a teenager is a horrible thing to do. He’s a young teenager too, only 14.

Im thinking there is more to this story.
However, Question for teachers. It is being pushed in academia, that grading A thru F, and recognizing excellence in class for diligence and hard work is bad and should be abandoned. Everyone gets a trophy, merit be damned. Then, why is it OK to give a Zero Award?
My mother used to say. "If student hasn't learned, teacher hasn't taught." But then, she made sure homework was done, attendance was perfect, and expected us to always make Honor Roll. Second Honor Roll was OK, but we were basically grounded until the next marking period, where we were expected to study hard enough to get back on First Honor Roll. This was back in the 50s and 60s. Times have changed.

#12’s post hit the nail squarely on the head. Everyone who has commented on this story, who no doubt come from all over the country, seem to have strong opinions about a very minor personal incident in Mississippi without knowing anymore than that a teenage boy felt bad over being embarrassed by a teacher. The truth is, we don’t need to have an opinion about it and certainly it is none of our business. But the father….now there is someone who should be concerned and involved instead of us. Who is he? Where is he?

I had a 6th grade teacher who humiliated me several times over various behavioral lapses. He was one of those tough WW2 vets who didnt beat around the bush. The embarrassment lasted a day or two. The lessons have lasted a lifetime.

Recently I ran into an old grade school classmate who is a very successful corporate attorney. I brought up how our 6th grade teacher rode his backside like a red headed rented step mule. He perked up and gave his wife a look and turned back to me and said so I didn't imagine all that? Then he said he had no clue what the (rare male teacher) had against him. I told him I had it figured out in real time. It's because he was much smarter than the teacher and the latter simply couldn't handle it. Obviously that experience didn't ruin his life he hasn't dwelled on it but evidentially it was a story he had shared with his wife. Glad I could offer some validation and share in front of his wife the immense respect and admiration I had for said friend in part due to how he handled that adversity.

This kind of public humiliation is wrong, whatever the cause. Even if the boy had a zero point zero GPA, there are constructive ways to address it. If the mother truly has no idea what prompted this incident, then some much-needed communication was lacking.
Too many kids ARE being given a pass for substandard work. Our local school district recently decreed that no student would be given a score less than fifty percent, even if he/she/it/they/other turned in nothing at all. But I repeat that public shaming will only damage a bad student further.
