Russia has admitted that the flagship of its Black Sea Fleet - the Moskva - was in flames on Thursday, with Ukraine claiming to have hit it with missiles. Russia's defence ministry said the Moskva missile cruiser had been badly damaged after ammunition on board was blown up by the fire. In comments reported by Tass news agency, the ministry said: "As a result of a fire on the Moskva missile cruiser, ammunition detonated." The crew, believed to number around 500, were all saved, they added. The statement did not say what had caused the initial fire, saying it was under investigation.

Well that's gonna leave a mark on the Russian Navy. Moskva being the flagship is a real warning to Vlad. Ukraine can hit back hard.

The Moskva? Who knew she was still around? Still, not as old as our 7th Fleet flagship - the Blue Ridge. The crew, believed to number around 500, were all saved, they added. Is the implication that the ship was abandoned? Could be. Having seen the incompetence of the Russian army over the last month I doubt their fleet is in much better shape - particularly in the area of damage control. And the ammunition that detonated was most likely one or more of the missiles stowed topside in those tube launchers (never a good idea).

Re#2 Thats exactly what happened. The ship took hits and the crew abandoned ship. A ship on fire with no fire control teams is in real trouble. I've read that if it hasn't sunk, it has turned turtle.

I noticed that their radar antennas are the revolving type. This indicates that the radar systems on their flagship are outdated systems. We have evolved to phased array radar which is much more advanced. The ongoing myth that Russia is a world military power is quickly unraveling in their war with Ukraine. Something tells me Putin is aware of this and his embarrassment could be dangerous.

I read an account of the attack in an Israeli military website that I consider highly reliable . Basically the Ukrainians distracted the crew with a feight by aircraft and got the crew chasing a high value target. The Ukrainians had hid a not particularly sophisticated missile battery on the coast in an obscure position where no one would expect the battery (nothing to defend). The Russians were baited in and ambushed. Clever.

I hope we are treating this war as grad school in modern real largely symmetric warfare. I see warning signs all over the place regarding our own preparedness. We have been in asymmetric war for so long we have not had such lessons in warfare that involve so much of our own or similar technologies. Our massive and massively expensive platforms have served us well against goat herders and improvised munitions. Now we are seeing how modern technology interacts with other forms of modern technology. We are seeing how sophisticated, in many cased hand held highly portable, weapons systems can inflict wildly disproportionate battle damage costs. Given our reliance on stockpiles of military hardware vs manufacturing throughput capacity, we have no room for error. Our stuff better work and be the right stuff, there's no nimble redirect option.

I had been wondering how long before these Harpoons and other powerful anti-ship missiles would get put to use. So much for the vaunted Black Sea fleet and their ability to terrorize the coast of Ukraine with impunity. And I wonder about the Russian ability to continue to produce new cruise missiles of their own. They had a few hundred in stock when the war started, according to most Western sources, and I doubt that they can produce them entirely within Russia, they typically do not have the capability to manufacture a lot of the components of their modern weapons, must buy them outside. I wonder if they can still purchase these things with various embargoes ongoing?

Wisconsin Ruling Delivers Final Victory
to GOP on Redistricting

In late March, a shocking ruling was delivered by the US Supreme Court regarding a long-shot appeal over Wisconsin’s redistricting maps. Legal “analysts” gave Republicans essentially no chance to overturn the state court’s decision to adopt Democrat-created maps spearheaded by Gov. Tony Evers. Yet, a decision made via the shadow docket delivered new hope and also pushed the ball forward on stopping racial gerrymandering that has long been Democrat’s cheat code when it comes to redistricting. To summarize, Democrat Gov. Tony Evers drew up another majority-black district in his redistricting submission, elevating proportionality above all other factors.

Public health officials in Europe and the United States are investigating dozens of puzzling cases of severe hepatitis in young children. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. The cause is often a virus, but the viruses that commonly cause the illness — hepatitis A, B, C, D and E — have been ruled out in the cases in question, leaving doctors searching for the culprit. In several cases, the illness was so severe that the children needed a liver transplant. No deaths have been reported. The World Health Organization on Friday said it was investigating 74 cases of severe acute hepatitis in children under age 13
White House restarting federal oil, gas

The Biden administration quietly announced Friday that it was restarting the sale of oil and gas leases on federal land next week — almost exactly 15 months after President Biden imposed a moratorium on such sales upon taking office. The announcement of the pending sales by the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) represents an about-face by the White House, which had resisted pressure from energy companies to open up more land for drilling, instead insisting that thousands of previously approved leases were going unused.

Ukraine said on Friday it was trying to break Russian forces’ siege of Mariupol, with fighting raging around the city’s Illich steel works and port, as the capital Kyiv was rocked by some of the most powerful explosions in two weeks. Russia said it had struck overnight what it said was a factory in Kyiv that made and repaired anti-ship missiles, in apparent retaliation for the sinking of the Moskva, the flagship of Moscow’s Black Sea fleet, on Thursday. Ukraine said one of its missiles had caused the Moskva to sink, in a powerful symbol of its resistance to a better-armed foe.

The Russian missile cruiser that was damaged in a fire on Thursday was hit and ultimately sunk by Ukrainian missile strikes, a senior U.S. defense official confirmed on Friday. Russia and Ukraine had offered differing accounts of what happened to the vessel. The defense source confirmed the ship was hit by two Neptune missiles, and told NPR there are likely casualties. Experts say the loss of the Moskva — the flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet — is significant both symbolically and militarily, even if it doesn't deal a decisive blow to Russia's overall operations.

Russia has confirmed the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet has sunk after what Ukraine said was a missile attack by their forces. If the facts are as claimed, the sinking is the most significant warship loss in decades, and possibly since the Second World War. Russian state media has confirmed the guided-missile cruiser and erstwhile flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva (Moscow) sunk on Thursday. The total loss of the ship comes after what Ukrainian state media claimed was a strike on the ship by two of their domestically produced  “Neptune” (Нептун) missiles on Wednesday. The Ukrainians said they’d caused major damage to the warship.

President Joe Biden’s campaign pollster, John Anzalone, expressed on Friday that the 2022 political environment is the worst he has experienced since Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992. “It’s the worst political environment that I’ve lived through in 30 years,” the well-known Anzalone told Politico Playbook about Biden’s America. Anzalone may be right. Thirty years ago, income inequality was drastically less, milk was about $1.13 per gallon, and the Soviet Union was dissolved and would soon retreat from Germany. Today, income inequality is skyrocketing, milk costs about $4.02 per gallon, and Russia has invaded Ukraine. Inflation has reached 40-year highs. The southern border remains unsecured. Fentanyl overdoses have increased. Gas prices have soared to record highs. Weakly wages have shrunk. Supply chains have broken.

New York Times columnist and – we’re constantly reminded – Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman says that inflation, which hit another new high this month, will soon abate. Why? Because, he wrote on Tuesday, “Lumber prices have plunged in recent weeks. Prices of industrial metals such as copper are coming down. Prices of used cars are still very high, but their surge has stalled and they may have peaked.” Oh, wait. That was from a column that Krugman wrote in June 2021.
