The Breakup: Will Russia Splinter Over
War in Ukraine?

Original Article

Posted By: Jagermeister, 4/11/2022 12:19:37 PM

Russia’s ill-fated invasion of Ukraine recalls Britain and France’s Suez campaign in 1956. Britain and France’s humiliating retreat marked the end of their status as first-rank powers and the beginning of a troubled period of political crises and loss of territory to independence movements. History may repeat itself.

Comments:

A factoid from the article: "There are more people today in Russia’s security apparatus than in its armed forces and more people in jail than in Brezhnev’s days." Something to think about.

Time to reprise 'The Lives of Others'. An excellent film about living under the "security apparatus" of the Cold War.

A better question might be will the United States break-up over the culture wars here. I don't want to live in a country that says men can get pregnant and have babies, that little children can be groomed by teachers to become sex objects for perverts. So, I can see how there might be a great 're-set' and not the one the marxists are planning but one where untold millions will vote with their feet to flee to the Free States of America. How about you?

Russia has always been splintered. Those that live well in Moscow, and those that have been exiled to Siberia.

Be careful of what you wish for. It’s not beyond reason there could be a Russian civil war. The nostalgic “evil” communists vs “democracy-loving” oligarchs. And what of NATO? What if Poland decides to play and war spills over onto its territory? It’s looking a lot like 1914 already. And 1917 is just around the corner. Ready to play?

Russia already has nuclear weapons in the Baltic region, Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anusauskas said on Thursday. One of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest allies warned NATO on Thursday that if Sweden and Finland joined the U.S.-led military alliance then Russia would have to bolster its defences in the region, including by deploying nuclear weapons. Anusauskas told Lithuania's BNS wire that nuclear weapons have been deployed in Russia's Kaliningrad exclave on the Baltic Sea since before the current crisis.

Pundits skeptical of or even hostile to Ukraine’s cause in its defensive war against Russia have different reasons, or rationalizations, for their views and hail from different points on the political spectrum. But there is one belief that unites nearly all of them: the conviction that Ukraine is not a democracy fighting for its survival but an American “Deep State” project, with a regime installed by a 2014 coup that was led by Ukrainian far-right extremists and backed or even engineered by the U.S. State Department.

Vladimir Putin’s central objective in Europe isn’t to capture Kyiv, the Donbas, or any other part of Ukraine. It’s to weaken the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which protects most of the continent against him. And in that longstanding campaign, Putin scored two significant victories this week.

A quarter-century ago, the U.S. Senate was faced with a major question: whether to ratify expanding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to include Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, which would bring the alliance closer to Russia’s border. The public generally supported NATO expansion, as did both President Bill Clinton and his 1996 GOP opponent, Bob Dole. Still, one foreign policy expert at the time said the ratification would require a “feat of magic”: Support for NATO expansion was shallow, and senators had hugely varied priorities.

A satellite image of Bucha in Ukraine appears to show bodies lying in the street nearly two weeks before the Russians left the town. The image from 19 March, first reported by the New York Times and confirmed by the BBC, directly contradicts Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's claim that footage of bodies in Bucha, that has emerged in recent days, was "staged" after the Russians withdrew. The satellite image shows objects that appear to be bodies in the exact locations where they were subsequently found by Ukrainian forces when they regained control of the town north of Kyiv.

Almost five decades ago I was sent on my first assignment to Moscow as a wet-behind-the-ears foreign correspondent for Reuters, and was told in farewell drinks at the pub just how lucky I was. Surely, said my fellow hacks, I would witness the end of Leonid Brezhnev, the evil man in the Kremlin. Well, end-Brezhnev turned out to be mid-Brezhnev as he staggered on and on. < snip > My bet, though, is that we have reached mid-Putin not end-Putin. And that even when the war is over, Russia is set to get darker and nastier.

Vladimir Putin has behaved outrageously no matter how defective American foreign policy has been and no matter how repugnant neoconservative rhetoric may sound. As a card-carrying member of the Old Right for the last 50 years, having suffered the slings and indignities that come with it, I am responding to other members of my fraternity who can’t bring themselves to condemn Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine and his destruction of its people.

The election of Donald Trump in 2016 upended political discourse in the United States. Although his election affected debates in both domestic and foreign affairs, the impact on the latter seems to have been the most consequential. As one commenter noted, Trump’s election has led to the bonfire of many of the established concepts of American foreign policy and grand strategy. The bonfire continues to rage.

The Biden administration has spent the last two weeks publicly censuring and sanctioning Russia over its brutal invasion of Ukraine. Yet even as it engaged in evermore shrill public denunciations of the undoubted evils of Vladimir Putin, it was simultaneously working hand-in-glove with the Russian dictator to finalize a new agreement with Iran over its nuclear program.

The Biden administration on Thursday unveiled hundreds of strategies across several federal agencies aimed at addressing what it says is racial and gender inequity in the federal government. A senior administration official said the initiative is the first major assessment of how government policies have allowed “inequality to fester,” including ways they said the government has blocked underserved communities from government services. “This is about getting under the hood in every agency,” the official said. The plan outlines more than 300 different strategies and commitments by more than 90 federal agencies, including the Justice, Defense, Energy and Labor departments. The Russian people know little about Putin’s war on Ukraine because Putin has blocked their access to the truth, substituting propaganda and lies. Years ago, pundits assumed the internet would open a new era of democracy, giving everyone access to the truth. But dictators like Putin and demagogues like Trump have demonstrated how naive that assumption was. At least the US responded to Trump’s lies. Trump had 88 million Twitter followers before Twitter took him off its platform – just two days after the attack on the Capitol, which he provoked, in part, with his tweets. (Trump’s social media accounts were also suspended on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitch and TikTok

Two women at New Jersey's only all-women's prison have both fallen pregnant after having sex with a transgender inmate. The pregnant women, who were not identified, are housed at the embattled Edna Mahan Correctional Facility, in Clinton, which New Jersey Governor announced plans to close last year.(Snip)It is unclear if the women had sex with the same transgender inmate, or if it was two different inmates. Edna Mahan houses 27 transgender prisoners, and over 800 women altogether. It is also unclear how far along the two inmates are, and whether they plan to continue with their respective pregnancies. An investigation has been launched.

Tony Dungy, the first black coach ever to win a Super Bowl, might have escaped notice this week had he merely supported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s “Responsible Fatherhood Initiative.” His real sin was to explain why. Dungy, a Christian father or eleven, recounted a conversation he had years back with the Rev. Abe Brown about Brown’s prison ministry. At Brown’s request, Dungy accompanied him to prison. Expecting to find hardened criminals, Dungy found instead “19- and 20- and 21-year-old kids who looked like my boys.” When Dungy asked what accounted for the young men’s incarceration, Brown told him, “(snip) Ninety-five percent of these boys did not grow up with their dad.”

President Joe Biden’s latest speech, it appears, was one for the birds. At least it seemed that way, as the somewhat hapless commander-in-chief gave what was meant to be a rousing speech and pep rally in Iowa on Tuesday. It was difficult to miss what appeared to be the projectile of avian fecal matter that scored a direct hit on the president’s left lapel. Although, after much mockery, the White House has given clarification on the supposed flying mystery substance that many aren’t buying.
