AVENEL, N.J.— The familiar sights and sounds are still there: the scuffed and faded floor tiles, the relentless beige-on-beige color scheme, the toddlers’ clothes and refrigerators and pretty much everything in between. There’s even a canned recording that begins, “Attention, Kmart shoppers” — except it’s to remind folks about COVID-19 precautions, not to alert them to a flash sale over in ladies’ lingerie like days of old. Many of the shelves are bare, though, at the Kmart in Avenel, New Jersey, picked over by bargain hunters as the store prepares to close its doors for good April 16.Once it shutters, the number of Kmarts in the U.S. –

As far as I know, the largest Kmart in the world is on Guam. It’s open 24/7 and is the place most tourists go to pick up their American souvenirs. There’s parking on the roof and all the bus lines have stops there. Most hotels will run regular shuttles as well. It’s the place to go for bargain clothing for the locals as well.

I tried to support K-Mart. But was usually disappointed because the local store did not have what I needed.

Even though K-Mart hit its high water mark in the '90s, there were plenty of warning signs they would eventually falter. KMart lost a lot of money trying to operate a big box hardware store called Builders Square. Their stores still looked like the 1970s 25 years later. And they had a terrible time keeping popular items in stock.

My first visit to a K-Mart was in the late '60s or early '70s. It seemed to be huge, it was brightly lighted, the shelves were well-stocked--with just about everything you could think of. A young girl's dream. By the time our local K-Mart closed, about six years ago, it was dingy, the clothing was rumpled, the merch was disorganized, the building seemed to be falling apart. It was sad. Like watching a beloved relative go downhill.

How the giants have fallen...Sears, Penneys, K-Mart... It happens when the business isn't nimble enough to adjust to realities, worsened. Each of these suffered from "turnaround" management that tried to restore profits by cheapening their wares and, with Sears and Penneys, cutting "knowledgeable" floor personnel.

That's a shame to lose Kmart and we lost are stores in the Chicagoland area several years ago.
Fun story; I'm a painting contractor and one summer we painted six or seven stores. The writing was on the wall that we were retaining to sell the buildings.
Naturally a lot of the trades we were concerned that we weren't going to get paid.
We finish up the job and I go to the manager's office to present at my bill. We were making small talk and getting along really well. Then he calls in the secretary to be a witness and opens up the safe. He counted out $6,800 in cash !

Kmart couldn't survive competing on price with Wal-Mart and the Internet. Sears is dying because of stupidity. Sears was perfectly positioned to become Amazon. They already had nationwide warehouse and distribution systems in place and millions of loyal customers who were already accustomed to buying products by looking at pictures in catalogues.

The leftists started Kmart down the road to destruction. I used to buy ammo, guns, oil and filters for cars, and some hardware items, hunting gear, camping gear and more from Kmart, for many, many years. They they got all antigun, and stopped carrying guns. A couple years later, no more ammo. Then the hunting gear was just gone, and the camping gear after that. And pretty soon, I didn't have any reason to seek out a Kmart, and they just carried regular drugstore sort of stuff....and they got dirty, and almost no clerks, and less stock.
Kmart management did this to themselves. Not sorry that they are gone. Too bad they counldn't have stuck with their original SUCCESSFUL business model.
Frankly, Walmart is starting down the same path, got rid of guns, now no more ammo. And their camping supplies are shrinking, too.

#8, the best place to get ammo is online. Buy at least 500 rounds at a time. This is a great resource: ammoseek . com.

#8, Also, don't get steel. Causes more jams. Brass is only slightly more expensive.

#8 hit a big point. KMart was the largest seller of guns and ammo in the country by a hefty margin, and they just caved in to the Dems. They never considered that the customers they were turning away bought other things at the store, and they weren't going to continue shopping there.

Kmart in the island territory of Guam in the Pacific seem to be doing well. Tourists are a significant portion of their customers.
