Democrats scramble to lock down Manchin

Democrats are putting the squeeze on Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), as they race the clock to try to figure out what, if any, filibuster changes can pass muster in a 50-50 Senate. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer’s decision to force a vote on changes to the rules by Jan. 17 puts Democrats on a high-profile collision course with their own colleagues absent an agreement, an effort that the New York Democrat acknowledges is an “uphill fight.” Democrats, under pressure from their own colleagues and outside groups, are scrambling to bring the negotiations with their conservative colleague to a close as they vow to bring the issue to a head

Manchin should go Republican, even if Rino. In that case Mattress Back would not have a tie breaking vote.

If Manchin declared himself an Independent and caucused with the Republicans, then Cocaine Mitch would be the Senate Majority Leader and Mattress Back would be irrelevant. Not the "best" outcome we could hope for, but it would really slow some of this current stupidity from Congress.

That only works, #4, as long as Pierre Delecto and/or Susie Q Collins don't decide to jump ship and join the dim caucus. Manchin and Sinema would make good RINOs, to offset their defection, sort of.

The framers of the Constitution are showing exactly why they wrote the document as they did. By not allowing just a simple majority to rule, and having checks and balances built-in to the process, prevents extreme legislation from both left and right.

Manchin won’t change to Independent, or GOP. You can count on his vote for the $5 trillion debacle. And he’ll vote with dems to end the filibuster. Manchin is the most disingenuous rat in the senate.

The Constitution does NOT prevent the "nuclear option" whereby the Senate can pass legislation by a 51-50 majority if the Vice President breaks a 50-50 tie. Therefore regarding the infrastructure bill and the voting bill) if 50 Democrats vote to pass the respective bill and VP Harris votes with them to break the tie, the bill passes. This is why Manchin matters. If 50 Republicans vote "no" and Manchin does not vote "yes" the bill fails. The US Constitution requires a super-majority in the Senate only as follows: 1. Convicting an Impeachment (2/3 majority in the Senate). 2. Expulsion of a member of one house of Congress (2/3 vote of the house in question). 3. Override a Presidential Veto (2/3 majority in both the House and the Senate). 4. Ratify a treaty (2/3 majority in the Senate). 5. Passing of a Constitutional Amendment by Congress (2/3 majority in both the House and the Senate). 6. Restore the ability of certain rebels to serve in the government (2/3 majority in both the House and the Senate). 7. Approval of removal of the President from his position (2/3 majority in House and Senate under the 25th Amendment). And in a few cases the Constitution requires a super-majority for a quorum. https://usconstitution.net/constfaq_q138.html

Don’t get your hopes up, because this advice isn’t quite what it sounds like. Joe Biden’s former COVID-19 adviser have begun a public campaign to get the White House to end the “perpetual state of emergency” that the Biden administration keeps extending. It’s time to dump “zero COVID” for a practical path forward on endemicity, they say … but is that what they’re proposing? The New York Times covered this as breaking news of a sort, but the real point of these proposals is to enshrine the emergency state into permanence: On the day President Biden was inaugurated, the advisory board of health experts who counseled him

It was inevitable that the implosion of the Biden administration would lure former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton back onto the political stage. The voters showed her the door five years ago, yet she remains unable to grasp what they were trying to tell her. The latest manifestation of this learning disability began last month with an online lecture series in which Clinton holds forth on “The Power of Resilience.” The series culminates with a cringeworthy reading, complete with feigned attempt to hold back tears, of the speech she purportedly prepared in anticipation of victory in 2016.

It took many hours of deliberation, but a jury finally reached a verdict in the trial of the year — one that should have been the trial of the year ten years ago. Ghislaine Maxwell could face decades in prison for sex trafficking of minors after getting convicted of five out of six counts in her indictment. As NBC News reports, Jeffrey Epstein’s literal partner in crime might also face a new trial for two counts of perjury: British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted Wednesday of five federal sex trafficking charges after a jury concluded that she played a pivotal part in recruiting and grooming teenage girls to be sexually abused

Tuesday afternoon, President Biden demonstrated why he has been no more successful than former President Trump in controlling the coronavirus, despite the advantage of vaccines and therapeutics that were not available to the latter. Speaking at the White House, Biden outlined additions to his “COVID-19 Winter Plan” that illustrate his administration’s inability to adapt to rapidly changing conditions. He assured Americans that we are not going back to March 2020, but his strategy belies that claim. It similarly emphasizes increased testing, deploying medical personnel to overcrowded hospitals, as well as rushing gloves, masks, and ventilators to Michigan, Wisconsin, Vermont, and other states currently enduring case surges.
