Why I'm voting against the For the People Act

The right to vote is fundamental to our American democracy and protecting that right should not be about party or politics. Least of all, protecting this right, which is a value I share, should never be done in a partisan manner. During my time as West Virginia’s secretary of state, I was determined to protect this right and ensure our elections are fair, accessible and secure. Not to benefit my party but all the people of West Virginia. For example, as secretary of state I took specific actions to establish early voting for the first time in West Virginia in order to provide expanded options

Manchin is concerned about his political future. He was re-elected by 49 % of the vote in a three way contest. In both recent presidential elections, Donald Trump carried West Virginia by 68 % with every county in the state being red. That kind of math causes him concern--and it should. He is already under water with the folks back home for voting to impeach Trump. He has no wiggle room.

The media and elected Democrats, from President Biden on down, are really pushing as hard as they can on Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. They seem to have redoubled their efforts this week after Manchin announced he would not vote for the Dems’ voting rights bill. This morning Ed wrote about Rep. Jamaal Bowman comparing Manchin to Mitch McConnell, though as Ed noted Bowman couldn’t explain who besides Manchin could win the Senate seat for Democrats in conservative West Virginia. The Washington Post published two opinion pieces today about Manchin. Greg Sargent’s is headlined, “How Joe Manchin’s awful new stance could blow up in his face.” Jennifer Rubin

Washington — The federal government has recovered millions of dollars in cryptocurrency paid in ransom to cybercriminals whose attack prompted the shutdown of the country's largest fuel pipeline and gas shortages across the southeastern U.S. last month, the Department of Justice announced Monday. On May 8, Colonial Pipeline paid a ransom worth roughly $4.3 million in bitcoin to the Russia-based hacking group known as DarkSide, which had used malicious software to hold the company hostage. Colonial Pipeline CEO Joseph Blount told The Wall Street Journal that the company paid the pricey ransom because the company feared a prolonged shutdown

Sinovac Biotech, a Chinese company responsible for the development of one of the least-effective Chinese coronavirus vaccines currently in global circulation, suggested on Sunday that patients should receive a third “booster” dose of its product to improve its performance. Chinese dictator Xi Jinping has prioritized the distribution of Sinovac’s product, “Coronavac,” to allied nations. Countries that have heavily depended on it for mass vaccinations have seen a significant surge in coronavirus cases parallel to increasing vaccination rates. Among the two most prominent examples are the populations of Chile and Seychelles

Democrats are just figuring out their woke agenda driven by the progressive radicals in their party is not popular. Additionally, they are shocked to find out that treating various racial groups as a monolith is not a winning strategy. According to a new report advising the party for 2022, the Democrats risk losing ground with minority voters. South Florida Democrat Debbie Muscarel-Powell, who lost re-election in 2020, said: “Unfortunately, the Democratic Party has in some ways lost touch with our electorate,” Ms. Mucarsel-Powell said. “There is this assumption that of course people of color, or the working class, are going to vote for Democrats. We can never assume anything.”

Deadline: White House host Wallace opened the show with hyperbolic gloom: “West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has, wittingly or unfittingly, ushered in an official death sentence for most of the Biden agenda by enacting a brand new standard for legislation, claiming

In today’s Wall Street Journal, two eminent scientists explain why the evidence points toward a laboratory origin for the covid-19 virus: In gain-of-function research, a microbiologist can increase the lethality of a coronavirus enormously by splicing a special sequence into its genome at a prime location. Doing this leaves no trace of manipulation. But it alters the virus spike protein, rendering it easier for the virus to inject genetic material into the victim cell. *** In the case of the gain-of-function supercharge, other sequences could have been spliced into this same site. Instead of a CGG-CGG (known as “double CGG”) that tells the protein factory

Obama suggested that urban areas will face more barriers in order to vote, alleging that the law made a "different set of rules for how votes are counted in Atlanta versus how they're counted in the rest of Georgia."
