Heroic Doctor Drives Hours Through
Snowstorm to Save High-Risk Newborn
Baby’s Life

A Charlottesville doctor who dropped everything to attend a complicated labor, hours away, is being hailed as a hero. The doctor drove through a snowstorm to perform a specialized procedure, potentially saving a newborn baby’s life in the process. “It’s not any different than someone who’s in battle,” said Dr. Stephen Early, pediatric otolaryngologist at the University of Virginia, to CBS. “You just make the decision, you go into the line of fire.” Mom Carrie Rush had struggled with infertility before becoming pregnant and enjoying a trouble-free first trimester. But routine ultrasounds and fetal MRIs detected a problem: her unborn baby had a potentially life-threatening jaw abnormality.

FTA: "“It’s not any different than someone who’s in battle,” said Dr. Stephen Early, pediatric otolaryngologist at the University of Virginia, to CBS. "You just make the decision, you go into the line of fire." It is a wonderful story, which I read in its entirety, and not to take anything away from Dr. Early, his statement to CBS should not go unchallenged. Case in point, U.S. Navy Surgeon Dr. Harry Dinsmore was the commanding surgical officer at a forward Navy hospital in Da Nang, that was primarily used to treat seriously wounded Marines and field corpsmen. In 1966, Captain Dinsmore removed a live 60 mm mortar shell from the chest of a South Vietnamese soldier. While the obvious injury was to the soldier's upper shoulder/clavicle area, the X-ray radiograph was chilling, as it showed the mortar completely embedded in the soldier's chest. "I saw the X-rays," Capt. Dinsmore said, "and at first I thought it was a joke. But when I realized it was no joke, I wished I were somewhere else." After clearing the operating theater, Capt. Dinsmore, acutely aware of the danger from an unexploded mortar shell, decided to do the surgery himself and requested volunteer assistance from among his enlisted Corpsmen. Having numerous volunteers, corpsman John Lyons, was chosen to assist, and upon removal of the shell, Lyons took it outside and disarmed it, emptying out nearly two pounds of TNT. The operating theater was sandbagged to protect exposures throughout the temporary medical facility. Seven years later, I was a bit taken aback when I saw that the walls of the Navy's Hospital Corps school in San Diego were lined with portraits of Navy Corpsman Medal of Honor winners, most of which were posthumously awarded. The army and Air Force also have great medics, nurses, and doctors who serve in combat billets and their bravery and lifesaving exploits on fields of battle should not be minimized. More recently, in 2012, a young Marine in Afghanistan was shot with a rocket-propelled grenade that pierced his leg and remained stuck there without detonating. The Army medevac crew that caught the call for help voted unanimously to ignore regulations and fly the wounded Marine to a medical facility where a Navy doctor and an Army EOD technician removed the unexploded grenade.

It is axiomatic that uninformed people are the easiest to deceive. A corollary to this rule is that people are most certain about the things they understand the least. Scientists are well aware of the gaps in their knowledge, but the evangelist is absolutely certain about the truth of whatever he is peddling. Taken together, intelligence and experience lead to prudence, while stupidity and ignorance lead to foolhardiness.(Snip)The government, for example, has denied Christians a permit to assemble for the National Day of Prayer, because they fear invisible White Nationalists will launch a revolution. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey signed a law on Friday banning voters from adding signatures on unsigned mail-in ballots after election day. The measure, Arizona Senate bill 1003 (S.B. 1003), was approved earlier in the state legislature in party-line votes. The new law codified a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Oct. 6, 2020, within one month of the 2020 election. It also ended disputes over unsigned mail-in ballots between the state Republicans and Democrats. Current Arizona law allows election officials to contact the voters to fix the signatures on the ballots if the signatures don’t match other signatures from records in the Department of Motor Vehicle,
