South Kingstown, R.I.—The University of Rhode Island has received a $50,000 gift from an alumnus to establish a scholarship for qualified Black students or for students from other underrepresented populations to study to become pharmacists. Fewer than 5% of all pharmacists are Black, the university said in a statement this week, citing information from Pharmacy Times.
The scholarship established by the donation from Dr. Kenneth Lawrence, who graduated from URI’s pharmacy program in 1990, is named the Robert and Birdie Lawrence Endowed Scholarship in honor of his parents. “Pharmacy is not a job; it’s a career, and it is something you have to work

Being a pharmacist requires hard work and discipline. Good luck!

I have no problem with this. If Dr. Lawrence is donating the money for the scholarship, he can decide who it goes to. The scholarship could be for over 50 years of age only, female only, red headed people only. I don't care. But just imagine if there was a scholarship for white people only!!

Well that would be correct, OP. But what is the problem here, friends?! An alumnus endowed (is paying for) this scholarship. Frankly, it sounds like a lovely, and grateful, use of one’s money. Let’s not go down the rabbit hole.

I wouldn't care either, except for the fact that even a suggestion of favoring WHITE people results in howls of outrage.

THIS is what systemic racism is.

What’s the problem here?
Anyone that has an issue with this has an issue with the double standard, not the poor black kid that might have an opportunity to get pout of the ghetto.
But looking at some of the posts, some DO have a problem with race.
I would remind those quick to throw out racial stereotypes that the MAGA movement had many black Patriots in its ranks.
I’m going to assume the racist comments on this thread are from Republicans. Tea Party and MAGA Patriots don’t see color and do t denigrate our brothers and sisters who don’t share our pigmentation.

I love this. Instead of insisting math is "racist" or "oppressive" (as Oregon's educational establishment has) the donor seeks to reward students who excel at math. This is a good thing. Not everyone is capable of doing what pharmacists do, and I can't think of any reason not to give a hand up to Back students who are gifted in math.

But of course. All through four long years of university with straight As and on the Deans Honor List, I was never able to qualify for a single scholarship, not being a minority or a female. EVERY scholarship was to minorities or females. They should have just said "No white males need apply" and left it at that.

If Kenneth Lawrence wants to help fellow blacks he should chose a method other than a overtly race based method. I applaud him as a successful graduate of the university and a successful career. More like him are needed. Shame on the administration of the University of Rhode Island.

Hey number 6. When blacks decide to integrate with the rest of America and stop being victims things will change. Yes, I'm a republican but not because I dislike blacks, it's because I believe that you should get what you work for. Start teaching you children that slavery ended over 150 years ago and we owe you nothing. Teach them they need to earn their way going forward. I'll be the first in line to give them the chance if they work for it.

There have been many scholarships for students from special groups - even the Sons of Norway used to have scholarships (they might still do this). May special interest groups do this and I think it is grand that someone is funding this pharmacy scholarship.

Good. The more people entering the STEM disciplines, the better. As long as standards are not lowered.

But that racist! I went to University of South Carolina and they had scholarships available from alumni that had the stipulation no blacks allowed I'm sure they change that oh, I graduated in 1980
