The Virginia Military Institute removed a 108-year-old statue of former professor and Confederate general Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson from its campus on Monday. The statue was lifted from its pedestal with a crane and is set to be relocated to a Civil War museum which is also operated by the college. “VMI does not define itself by this statue and that is why this move is appropriate. We are defined by our unique system of education and the quality and character of the graduates the Institute produces,” retired Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins, the school’s interim superintendent, said in a statement.

Pathetic. Stonewall Jackson was a hero, and was one of the early advocates for black education. This was an ignorant decision.

And did removing the statue free one slave or put food on the table of one poor black family?

I remember when VMI was a respected, honorable school. I guess not anymore.

Outrageous, since he taught there, but since America is out of the war winning business...
We will pay for this.

OR, maybe soon there will be a new Stonewall Jackson. And Lee. And Johnston.
There must be, or it's over.

How I once loved winding around the three mountains from
Lynchburg to Lexington... to be greeted by VMI cadets on the sidewalks, tipping their hats, “Good morning, M’am,” and then to explore an antique shop before brunch...
[before females were invited/accepted].
Things changed after that...
FTA: “Time and again over the past 181 years, the Institute has adapted and changed,” Wins said. “Each time, we have become a better, stronger institution. Though change can sometimes be difficult, it is time for our beloved Institution to move forward, to strengthen our unique system of education and training, and grow the leaders of tomorrow.” Not.
Sad, they lost their historic Constitutional, character trait... to be replaced by appeasement, which never works.
Is W&L next...

My brother went to school at VMI. Maybe it's a good thing he isn't here to witness the crazy.
Always remember "People do what you let them. The more you let them, the more they will do" We have a group drunk with power. Sort of like South Africa.

Did a lot of my growing up (a lot of years ago) in Virginia and remember so many of the monuments and battlefields. Can't believe what is going on there, including stuff like this.
Stonewall Jackson was an exemplary General, a perfectly appropriate subject of study and object of respect and honor at VMI.

At a conference table somewhere on campus, some doddering trustees must have asked each other, ''How can we let them know WE are the GD sonsuvbitches in charge of this here place?

It should be renamed the South New York Military Institute. Carpet bagging New Yorkers have ruined or are in the process of ruining all of the South Atlantic states. Yankee Go Home!

If VMI is not defined by the statute, why move it? What about the water fountain on campus? Does it rank being moved since it doesn't define the institution? This is pure foolishness. VMI is conformist and not unique after this. President Trump, thank you for your plan for the restoration of teaching real American (and world) history to ignorant and idiot Americans.

Well, that should set the ball rolling. There's a house in town that Jackson lived in, and a statue in the local cemetery,....is that to be erased? Not to mention all the Robert E. Lee remembrances around town. Both graduates of VMI, I believe.

Apparently, VMI "defines itself" by cowardice in the face of racism these days.

VMI is right next door to Washington and Lee University. Lee is buried in the chapel there. When both men are purged from that campus and the chapel razed, are they even going to dig up Lee’s horse “Traveler”?

Your character is defined by your ability to stand up to the evil that is now confronting us in trying to erase our history. VMI must be run by cowards who do not deserve to be in charge of such a fine school. Shame on you. And shame on those who do not understand the importance of history and heroes. All history is flawed, as are heroes, but that does not change their importance in achieving and maintaining freedom.

The liberals have long loathed the South, and have never stopped attacking it. This, with the statues, is just another variant of that attack. Southern culture is much stronger than progressive ideology. And will prevail, just as it always has.

If Virginia is not proud of their history and their predecessors, why don't they get rid of all of it? The people they currently despise so much are the ones that built the state, all of whom are better people than the present ones.

Isn't that precious? Will they put up a replacement statue? How about Benedict Arnold? He was loyal to the British. Or maybe George Custer? He reached his level of incompetency. So may heroes, so little time. Erwin Rommel? He knew how to fight with tanks.
I have it. Colin Powell. Genius for our time.

Try removing a statue of MLK and justifying that. Lee and Jackson were the best generals in the war to FREE THE FREAKIN SLAVES.

Wow, this really is exactly like the Chinese Cultural Revolution where statues were removed and millions died. The Chinese Flu (Covid) being used by the democrat communists to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans now is just the start of the mass incarceration and slaughter heading our way.

Virginia is a suburb of D.C. so we can only expect this kind of nonsense from the spineless administrators and others who genuflect to the minority number of people who are not afraid to speak up and voice their senseless and untruthful blathering's. where are all the sincere citizens who pursue truth and clarity in our government and other levels of society? God help us if we lose the virtuous, proud and courageous Americans who want only to have the best life for all other Americans and themselves. neutralize the national media as a beginning and only follow the reports of sincere and truthful news agencies.

Any reminder that men once took up arms to separate themselves from an over-reaching centralized government must be erased from public consciousness, except to teach us that the USA is a fundamentally bad nation founded on racism; this is straight out of 1984. Meanwhile, the school's interim superintendent is bLACK, which certainly has nothing to do with his zeal to remove a monument to a fine American.
