Eddie Van Halen, the guitarist and songwriter who helped give the radio-rock band Van Halen its name and sound, died Tuesday after a battle with cancer. He was 65.
His death was announced by his son, Wolf Van Halen, on Twitter.
"I can't believe I'm having to write this," the statement said, "but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I've shared with him on and off stage was a gift."
In a band known for its instability —
Like Gretzky and Jordan, Eddie was a rare individual who took his profession to another plateau.

He redefined guitar playing. Excellent keyboard skills as well. Bad health habits caught up with him.

I didn't like Van Halen's music (the group) but I thought Eddie was a true guitar maestro. RIP Ed, you deserve it.

Extraordinary guitar player. For something a bit out of character for Van Halen, try "Finish What Ya Started."

Old fogie alert: I thought he was just a lot of noise in the eighties. I haven’t been motivated listening to his sound after having followed Clapton and Hendrix

This one is a tough pill to swallow. After reading the article I felt the need to pick up my guitar and strum awhile. While I don't count Van Halen amongst my favorite groups, 5150 being the only VH album I own, for those of my generation who tinkered with the six-string, EVH was the standard which most of us could only dream of emulating. Never got to see them in concert and now I never will. About a year ago there was a lot of talk about another tour with DLR that never came to be. Now we know why. RIP.

Another piece of my childhood bites the dust....I saw VH open for Black Sabbath back in August 1978 at Madison Square Garden. They blew away Sabbath...I think everyone went straight to Tower Records after the show and bought the album. Heaven's band just got a new sideman...RIP, EVH.

(sigh) Another one dies young.
I saw a recent interview with him and was really shocked at how old he looked.
He was just a bit older than me. They made great music for listening in cars. You could turn it up past distortion levels and it sounded the same.

Ed was a real innovator and he created another defining moment for guitar as an instrument alongside Les Paul, Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck, etc. As someone else alluded to, his vices were his downfall.
R.I.P. Eddie...

Never liked the band...too old, I guess. But he and cute-as-a-button Valerie Bertinelli were quite a pair back in the day, weren't they?

One of the great ones. Besides his virtuoso artistry, I loved his exuberance. He loved what he was doing. Never offended us with politics, either. RIP

#13 - It is rumored that EVH filed to vote democrat just a few minutes ago. So much for not being political. RIP EVH.

More sad news. Baseball greats and music icons. I guess this is what it's like to get old. I'm not enjoying it. There's still a chance 2020 could end on a higher note, a Trump and Republican landslide.

We're facing a long line of rock icons that are nearing the end of the road. Not too many new ones coming up with the same talent.

One thing about the Van Halen brothers, Eddie and Alex, sticks out for me. Reading a biography, I found it interesting that when the brothers would argue, they would speak in their native Dutch language.

Edward Van Halen, in addition to guitar playing innovations like tapping (first done on "Eruption" on the first album), was a guitar builder famous for numerous guitars such as Frankenstrat, which had the tone of a Gibson Les Paul while having the tremolo and controls of the Fender Stratocaster. He made an exact copy of the Frankenstrat--he kept the original--for display in a museum. It was inevitable that he would get into mass production of electric guitars, and he did with the establishment of EVH guitars, with everything from sub-$500 affordable models all the way to a very limited edition (50 guitars) black and yellow copy of the Bumblebee Stratocaster he played during the 1979 tour, a steal at $20,000.
What I'm saying is that Eddie probably knew more about guitars, inside and out, than practically any other person on earth. In David Solway's Reflections on Music, Poetry & Politics he, a songwriter and recording artist in his own right, identifies Van Halen by name for the rocker's incredible guitar chops. We're going to miss Eddie.

I have heard the name, Van Halen, but I couldn't place a single song when I stopped and thought for a few minutes. I asked my wife....same blank. I checked out "top ten hits by Van Halen" on line......I think I had heard Jump and maybe one other that I can't think of the name of 20 minutes later.
Sorry, I was not listening to the stuff being played on the radio when this band was hot. I sampled about 5 or 6 of their YouTube videos and ....not something I would stay and listen to if I ran across it while just tuning across the dial, either. Different era, different tastes.
No offense against the guy, just not my style of music. RIP, sir. You had a lot of fans.
