Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Friday lifted all COVID-19 restrictions on businesses, including restaurants and bars, and dropped penalties for not wearing a face mask - sparking a protest among upset residents. DeSantis made the announcements during a noon press conference in St. Petersburg, and quickly drew ire from residents who protested the new protocols. He argued that threat of the coronavirus pandemic - which has surpassed seven million cases and 203,000 deaths - had eased sufficiently to allow the state to enter Phase 3 of its reopening. 'We're not closing anything going forward,' said DeSantis.

Critics! Nothing stopping them from staying away from restaurants and bars if they're at risk health-wise or they still believe the media hype.

I get that #1, my relatives are nice people in deep S Texas but for same reasons, no way.
This Governor sure is gutsy. Well-done. I hope Governor Abbott is soon to follow suit.

#1 you forgot bears. For some reason I have had four separate bear sightings around my house in Carrabelle. Sharks out in the front yard, too. I love it, except for the yellow flies.
I can't wait to get the steamed shrimp at the Fathoms steam bar!

Thank you Governor Desantis! You had my vote, now I'll happily vote DeSantis 2024! This took political courage. So many of my liberal Facebook friends are already predicting death, doom, and destruction. Of course, they predicted the same thing when DeSantis mandated the public schools open. It's been a month of school's open and the predicted Covid deaths of students and teachers have failed materialize!

Earth to Abbott! Earth to Abbott! Wake up, you fool, and open Texas--and drop the stupid mask decree (which I haven't worn yet, and won't)!

Meanwhile in communist New York, comrade Cuomo will keep the state locked up with his whims until 2022.

Well done, Governor! Too bad places like New York, where the virus is all but gone, won't do the same.

Florida frees you up and in NYC, DeBlasio is threatening more extensive lockouts in some areas with police enforcement and fines.

Finally, a governor has ended the emergency decrees. Somebody had to be first. Don't take much heart on this ending of the mask decrees, as the stores can still require them to enter their stores.

DeSantis never fully closed Florida He used individual counties & cities stats to justify certain closings ...the way it should have been done in all states. DeSantis for President 2024!!! He's my hero.

Stop with the stinking lies. A real flu pandemic™ like H1N1 had 60 million cases. Everyone around you was hacking and sick. Now? Ha. The 200k death number is probably inflated five fold.

Except for closing bars on St. Patrick's Day, after owners bought beer stocks and had hired staff, bands, etc., and then re-closing them later on, RD has been great with this.

Gov Witchmer wot give up her Emergency Powers stranglehold on Michigan.. the petition drive to remove Emergency Powers will exceed 500k... enough proven registered voters (340k) to have legislators stop her.. but probably not befor she does some dastardly election fraud enabling action..

Yay! I live in FL and we love DeSantis! He has common sense and he's also a huge Backer of The President! We've been going to Restaurants for some time now, with no problem. I would suspect they will continue to be cautious and continue to sanitize tables and chairs. Our Town Squares are opening on October 5th which makes all of us happy. They provide live Bands every single night. It's wonderful to take a chair and sit in the fall weather and listen to music and just people watch! Life is becoming normal again!

All Republican Govs. and mayors need to do the same, while the blue state tyrants are extending their lockdowns. No better way to show Americans whom to vote for in November.

Presidential! Terribly disappointed in our Gov Abbott. Not sure who got to him. His unconstitutional mask edict was the worst. And then he doubles down stating masks helped flatten the curb. Not sure I can support him going forward. Signed, life long Texas evangelical Christian conservative!

Gov. Abbot (R) Austin has mis-read his voters.
I would prefer to attribute this faux pas to good intentions and paternalism.....
.....but the toxic lure of increasing POWER has taken down many fine men who became addicted without meaning to.
....and Dan Patrick is missing a fine opportunity to raise hell or resign.

Good news.
If you have some special health problems, or are over 70, probably best to use your own judgement, based on your own personal health situation. But if you are healthy and under 50 or 60, enjoy life. This bug has a very low death rate in the under 60 age group, something like 1 or 2 per 10,000 for ALL folks, and if you let people filter out themselves by their own health situation, the death rate will be lower than that.
