A Black jogger who was detained in Florida last month for matching the description of a burglary suspect has been offered a job in the county sheriff’s office for the way in which he handled the encounter with the deputies who detained him.
Joseph Griffin, who is a registered nurse and former military veteran, was out jogging in Deltona, Fla. when deputies stopped him for matching the description of the suspect they were looking for: a Black male, with a white tank top, dark shorts, and a beard.

Glad it worked out well. Kudos to the sheriff for asking him to come talk to them about the experience. I’ve never been detained, and I imagine most cops have not ever been detained either. No doubt it is an unnerving situation.

If there is a burglary in an area near me and the description is an old white guy with a grey beard wearing a blue shirt, I would expect the police to stop me for questioning if I was in that area. Just comply with the legal requests of a police officer and you will not be harmed. Why can't these people causing the racial strife understand that? I also wonder the description of the actual burglar was when they caught him. Guaranteed it was a Black man with a beard wearing dark shorts and a beard. If it was not, the article would have made it a point to tell us.

Hey Betz, how do you get to be a "former military veteran"? You either are or you are not.

Blacks are so special these days. They get invited to join the force if they behave well. Never heard any well-behaved whites, Asians or Hispanics being asked to join the force after being stopped for questioning by the cops.

Now here's a news flash. A black man that didn't resist and fight with the cops and he didn't get shot.... Wonder if there's a less for other young black men here?

Comply and cooperate with the police and you get a job. Great hiring slogan.

I am sorry but there is an untruth being circulated. Caucasian people are stopped by the police too. I can attest to it. I am also familiar of a situation where my friend's (Caucasian) daughter-in-law was stopped, asked to get out of her car, and put in handcuffs. She knew the police had the wrong person but cooperated completely. Eventually, she was let go but like the person in above story, it was a harrowing experience.

In my insane party days in the Sixties, I was detained AND arrested for an open bottle of cheap vino in my dad’s borrowed car! Only because I was still sober and extra nice to the cops, they decided to take off the cuffs and issue me a $100 ticket. It pays not to argue with cops.

I, too, have been detained...twice. Once, when I was going to pick up my paycheck at the office of a venue in which GHW Bush was going to appear. I was with my young son, and the Secret Service stopped me and searched my car, complete with drug/bomb-sniffing dogs. They were not kind. The other time, I was pulled over and approached by an officer with a drawn gun. A car matching my car’s description had just been used in a crime. This officer was very kind, and apologetic.

In this time of less tax money for cities because of the virus lockdowns, police are doing their part to take up the slack. On my frequent runs into town, the radar talks to me most of the way, because police have decided to make the roads safe Seeing a police car was actually a rare occurrence in my rural South La parish, but now it seems there's one behind every tree, literally. In the local, published police reports, traffic stops are becoming the #1 item. Being polite used to be good for a warning, but now, knowing 'somebody' is about the only way you go home without a ticket. Tickets are now 3 and 4 times what they were just a few years ago. Since I'm old, retired and in no hurry to get anywhere, I haven't been stopped in years, but I have grandchildren that are enthusiastic drivers. Being polite might get you less of a citation, but you're still going to get one. And you won't get the stuffing beaten out of you if you don't resist. Watching traffic does keep them from enforcing masking rules, though. Just my 2 cents observation from SE Louisiana.

So a black male was approached by police. Obeyed their request. Treated the officers with respect and the officers treated him with respect and the incident was successfully concluded with no further issues. As opposed to a black male being approached by police, tries to run away, tries to tackle them, attempts to steal their weapon, beat them, use their own weapon against them, and ends up getting shot and killed. It's so hard to understand why situations that begin on a similar note, end so differently. I wish I could figure it out...

It's all about 'diversity' in the police department don't you know.
