Singing Dogs Re-emerge From
Extinction for Another Tune

The New Guinea Singing Dog, a dingo-like animal with a unique howling style, was considered extinct in the wild. But scientists reported Monday that the dogs live on, based on DNA collected by an intrepid and indefatigable field researcher. Their analysis, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that the dogs are not simply common village dogs that decided to try their chances in the wild. The findings not only solve a persistent, though obscure puzzle, they may shed light on the complicated and still emerging picture of dog domestication in Asia and Oceania.

This really cool! I’ve read all dog species evolved from wolves. I need to look up the origins of the African Wild Dog, because I think they must have separated prior to the evolution of the wolf. Hyenas are not dogs, but developed some similar traits due to convergence. Convergence refers to the independent development of same/similar survival traits and behaviors in separated populations. One example includes the general tendency for many (not all) animals and insects to use black/white, black/yellow, and black/red color schemes as a warning (e.g., skunks, black widow spiders, bees, yellowjackets, and some reptiles). Anyway...interesting topic!

Watched the video, curious to hear them. Heck, we have this at home! I’d put up our Texas Blue Lacy Dog/Catahoula’s pipes against these yahoos any time! All our dogs tune up when they hear sirens (we live in the country) and pretty soon you’ll hear other people’s dogs chime in as well! Quite a symphony!

But-but-but----- I have it on good authority from ALL the experts that "extinction is forever". Footnote: Except when it isn't. A friend who is no dummy, and very much knows what is is looking at, and how to ID the differences between the real thing and the "yes, people always mistake that one for the extinct one" (under wing bars) has twice seen a flying Ivory Billed Woodpecker in the vast swamps of the Florida central western coastal swamps. And there are now ornithologists who are pretty convinced that there is a small population in some of the coastal Louisiana swamps. Many "extinctions" are not real, only rare animals who the remaining individuals live in hard to get to areas.

The Coming Coup? 11 replies

As if 2020 were not insane enough already, we now have Democrats and their ruling class masters openly talking about staging a coup. You might have missed it, what with the riots, lockdowns and other daily mayhem we’re forced to endure in this, the most wretched year of my lifetime. But it’s happening. It started with the military brass quietly indicating that the troops should not follow a presidential order. They were bolstered by many former generals—including President Trump’s own first Secretary of Defense—who stated openly what the brass would only hint at. Then, as nationwide riots really got rolling in early June, the sitting Secretary of Defense

Former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell castigated the White House press corps for a perceived lack of interest in Friday’s news that Serbia agreed to become the third country to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. "This is atrocious ... You might be too young to understand what this issue is about,” Grenell said during a White House press conference that was intended to address the news that Serbia and Kosovo had agreed to a historic agreement to normalize relations. “Maybe the older journalists should step up and say, 'This is a big deal.' ... I am astounded about what happens in D.C.

Former FBI official Peter Strzok said in an interview published Friday that the Steele dossier was a “problem” for the Trump-Russia probe because it sent investigators off “on a series of wild goose chases.” “The report was very typical of information that the FBI often receives. It comes from several sources, including some suspect sources. Some of it is bullshit, and some of it is rumor, and some of it is disinformation,” Strzok told The Atlantic. “From our perspective,” Strzok said of the dossier, “some of it was a distraction.” Strzok’s comments mark one of the strongest public critiques to date from an FBI official regarding the dossier,
Is Biden’s Bubble Strategy About to Burst? 2 replies

Is Democrats’ Biden bubble strategy about to burst? By keeping Biden away from the public, Democrats have compressed the race into a two-month sprint with no margin for error. Like Aesop’s fable about the tortoise and the hare, Democrats may find Biden has waited too late to run. The presidential race is unmistakably closing. On September 1, Real Clear Politics’ average of national polling had Biden lead at 6.2 percent (49.6 percent to 43.4 percent); that is down from a 9.4 percent lead on July 1. In the determinative battleground states, Biden’s lead was just 2.7 percent (48 percent to 45.3 percent),

The Justice Department is expected to file an antitrust lawsuit against Google as soon as this month, according to two people familiar with the matter, after Attorney General William P. Barr overruled dozens of federal attorneys who initially signaled the U.S. government was not ready to bring such a landmark case. The competition inquiry, which began last year, focuses on Google’s sprawling search and advertising empire and the extent to which it harms rivals and consumers. Federal officials have sought to expedite their work in recent weeks, aiming to file a complaint ideally before the 2020 presidential election,

Erica Kious is now getting threats against her life and her business for exposing the hypocrisy of Nancy Pelosi, who accuses the salon owner of a “setup” that caught her on camera getting her hair done indoors, against lockdown rules, and without wearing a mask, to boot. Does Pelosi really expect people to believe she was ignorant of her city’s anti-COVID rules — and also the staffers who bird-dog the schedule of the speaker of the House? No: Pelosi knew she was cheating. She just can’t admit she believes the rules don’t apply to her but only to those whose livelihoods they’re destroying.
The Inevitable Implosion of Biden’s Campaign 23 replies

It’s tempting to attribute Joe Biden’s plummeting poll numbers in key battleground states to his dilatory denunciation of the riots that still ravage their Democrat-run cities. However, the campaign’s fatal flaw is more subtle than Biden’s tacit approval of mob violence. It is rooted in the classism that resulted in his nomination to be the Democratic standard bearer. Among the progressives who control the party it’s an article of faith that President Trump’s base consists of undereducated working-class whites. Thus, they reluctantly supported Biden’s nomination in the hope that “working class Joe” could peel off enough of Trump’s benighted blue collar support to capture the White House.
Temporary victory: Texas Supreme Court

Wednesday I wrote about the Attorney General of Texas, Ken Paxton, filing a lawsuit against Harris County Clerk Christopher Hollins. His intention is to halt the county clerk’s plan to send a mail-in ballot application to every registered voter in Harris County. Harris County has 2.4 million registered voters, so we’re not talking about a small operation here. At the end of the post I noted that with early voting beginning in just six weeks in Texas, the Texas Supreme Court would likely rule quickly. They did. Later Wednesday the ruling in favor of A.G. Paxton came down.

At least 77 "worst of the worst" accused offenders were arrested during an operation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Atlanta Field Office earlier this summer, according to a report on Thursday. Most of the individuals arrested have had convictions for aggravated assault, cruelty towards children and other crimes that targeted the young, Thomas Giles, the ICE Atlanta Field Office director, told FOX 5. He said the operation -- which spanned from July 13 to Aug. 20 -- focused on individuals he deemed "the worst of the worst -- the threats to public safety."

Coverage of Joseph Kennedy III’s failed primary challenge to Senator Ed Markey has sometimes focused on its ideological implications, particularly Markey’s successful effort to position himself as a progressive champion fighting the ultimate beneficiary of name-brand privilege. But to a far greater extent, young Joe’s loss has been described as signaling the end of the family dynasty he often seemed uncomfortable representing. That feels unfair, since the Kennedy clan’s reputation for political invincibility began to slowly unravel many years ago. It’s true that Joe III’s campaign broke a long Kennedy winning streak in Massachusetts, as the Boston Globe noted:
