More than 25 years ago, Doug Bandow, Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute, and a frequent contributor to these pages, pronounced in his book, The Politics of Envy: Statism as Theology, that we “live in an age of envy.” Pointing out that “people don’t so much want more money for themselves as they want to take it away from those with more,” Bandow wrote that “greed is bad enough, eating away at a person’s soul, but envy is far worse because it destroys not only individuals, but also communities…”
Bandow was prescient about the growth of government, and the envy that has driven it. But it is unlikely that even he

The article points out a specific notation of envy that the socialists push, "malign envy".
Envy, and a touch of greed, wanting more, can be a motivating force. When the neighbor brings in a landscaper and spruces up their yard it often creates a sense of envy; it looks great and you would like your yard to look as good. You desire the money, a touch of greed, that would allow you to hire a landscaper as well. Most of us would work some overtime, save a bit, and eventually get the money for such desired things and take pride in the outcome.
The Socialists encourage malign envy. You are deprived because your neighbor has participated in some evil intention or action that is preventing your from getting what you want. Resentment, anger, and hate will follow. If you are Black and your neighbor is while, it might be due to racism. Even though your neighbor has no racist attitude and taken no racist actions, systemic racism gives him an unfair advantage. The mumbo jumbo that establishes this is murky but the resulting resentment, anger, and hate that is encouraged is not. It is a essential part of the Socialist message. If they cannot rouse you to RESENTMENT, ANGER, and HATE, they can't get your support.
As the article states, there can be only one outcome for these emotions, violence.
The problem is, the Socialists build all of it on lies. Lies for the issues and lies for their solution.

This is the sad pathology that I saw in Russia and Ukraine. Visiting the home of a scientist who had worked on an earlier project, now completed, a few years before, we were discussing our lives. He asked me if I had a "dacha" which is basically their "country house". How the average soviet citizen got a dacha, would take more space than is appropriate, but we had visited his dacha, and picked some vegetables which his wife had cooked up as part of our lunch. More were in our dinner, and the vodka was out, a requirement.
He asked if I had a dacha, and I said that I did, in the mountains. He asked how far it was from my home, and I told him a 10 hour drive. He asked "Who guards it when you are not there?" I was puzzled and said that nobody guards it. He snorted and said, "Here, they would burn it".
More discussion followed, but apparently envy of what others have is so intense in the former soviet countries that people are likely to burn down someone's nice dacha unless it is guarded.
Marxists and their minions are like that. Destroy what they cannot have. They are equally miserable, but have brought down the achiever to their level. What a sad, sick way of thinking.

Our current politics have made me understand, for the first time, the importance of the Tenth Commandment, and the reason that God gave it to us.
