Manila—Philippine military officials say Muslim militants allied with the Islamic State group have set off a powerful motorcycle explosive followed by a suicide bombing that together killed 14 people, many of them soldiers. It was the worst extremist attack in the Philippines this year. A regional military commander says at least 75 soldiers, police and civilians were wounded in the midday attacks in southern Sulu province. The bombings were staged as the government grapples with the highest number of coronavirus cases in Southeast Asia. Most of the victims were killed and wounded in the first attack, when a bomb attached to a motorcycle

Comments:

Muslim religious rituals ebbed for a while there. Certainly in the USA, quite the contrast from the days of Imam Barry.

The religion of body pieces strikes again. The definition of a moderate muslim is someone who uses a smaller bomb.

Dutarte's strategy of shooting drug dealers on sight needs to be re-oriented to muslims in Mindanao. He was born and raised in that area of the country.

The violent Muslims have been killing people in the Philippines since Black Jack Pershing was there in 1901. They were converted under the Ottoman Empire and have been bloodthirsty thugs ever since. On of Pershing's officers buried dead Moro Muslims with pig carcasses, and Pershing sprinkled a few live ones with pig's blood, and sent them back to tell that any dead would be treated to the pig's blood, too. Apparently, it helped calm the situation to a degree. But they are back killing. Islam makes itself the enemy of any civilized country.

Heavily armed civilians have been filmed protecting businesses in Kenosha after arsonists set buildings alight, torching much of the black business district Monday. In footage taken by a local reporter, a small group of men can be seen carrying rifles and wearing combat gear as they protect local shops. They deny they are part of a militia.(Snip) 'I'm on your side but you can't burn down your local businesses.' The line stretched a quarter-mile before the sun was barely up Saturday, snaking around corners like bread lines in the 1930s. But the hungry in Queens are today’s New Yorkers, left jobless by the coronavirus. Until the pandemic struck the city, La Jornada food pantry used to hand out groceries to roughly 1,000 families a week. Now, the figure tops 10,000. And volunteers serve lunch every day to 1,000—many of them kids with growling stomachs.(Snip) Seniors, moms and kids, singles—many immigrants from China and Mexico—wait for hours. They turn out in droves wherever, and whenever, the food pantry’s truck shows up.

The National Guard was called in to quell fiery riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin—as protesters defied a curfew to loot and destroy a mostly black business area they are supposedly trying to defend following the police shooting of a local black man. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers summoned 125 members of the National Guard Monday after protesters set cars on fire, smashed windows and clashed with officers in riot gear Sunday after the shooting of Jacob Blake. But that and a dusk-to-dawn curfew did not stop the city from exploding once again on Monday night—with blazes set near the scene of Blake’s shooting

After looters crashed through his floor-to-ceiling windows and stole $1 million worth of booze in May, Chicago-Lake Liquors owner John Wolf wanted to protect himself from a repeat occurrence. Like property owners throughout the world, he wanted to install security shutters on the outside of his building. The investment would not only prevent rioters from entering his store, it would protect his windows—which cost $50,000 to replace. But Wolf ran into a big obstacle: The city of Minneapolis has barred security shutters on building exteriors since 2004. Unlike St. Paul, which allows external shutters as long as owners request a permit,

A NASA-funded scientist has been charged with fraud and conspiracy, federal prosecutors announced Monday, saying he was working as a Chinese researcher at the same time he was taking U.S. government money. The FBI says Zhengdong Cheng hid his Chinese associations, including being part of China’s Thousands Talents Program that seeks to illicitly siphon U.S. research. If his involvement had been known, he wouldn’t have been allowed on the NASA-funded project. So he lied about his ties to Texas A&M University, where he was working and which had the NASA contract, the government charged.(Snip) The NASA research gave Mr. Cheng access

The punctuation problem ignited over social media recently, with Gen Z and millennials agreeing that ending a sentence with a period is overly hostile and, worse yet, extremely uncool. “Only old people or troubled souls put periods at the end of every sentence,” wrote digital culture journalist Victoria Turk in her book on digital etiquette “Kill Reply All.”   Corrections*

The NFL is preparing to end the use of military honor guards to present the American flag ahead of the national anthem, according to reports. A league source claims that the policy benching military, federal, and police guards is part of its COVID-19 response, according to Front Office Sports. “They won’t be on the field,” a source told the site. “That could change as the season progresses. But that’s the plan at the beginning.” It appears that there will be no flags on the field and the flag will only appear on electronic scoreboards during the playing of the national anthem, at least for the beginning of the season.

A new study published to the journal Scientific Reports suggests that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with slightly decreased brain volume. Scientists have long known that heavy alcohol use shrinks the brain, but it's not clear whether or not moderate drinking has a similar effect. Researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland explored the possible link within a sample of 353 Finnish men and women aged 39 to 45. On average, the subject group reported moderate alcohol consumption, indicated by an AUDIT-C score of 3.92. Such a score is roughly equivalent to drinking two to four times a month, having between three and four drinks a session,
