An artist has transformed the chipped stone busts of ancient Roman emperors into photorealistic portraits with the help of historical artefacts and creative software. Daniel Voshart, from Toronto, Canada, says that his project of painstakingly colourising and shaping the faces of 54 Principate rulers was 'a quarantine project that got a bit out of hand', but it has attracted attention from hobbyists to historians. And he has now released his completed work in a series of stunning portraits and posters that cover 300 years of Roman history. Though more interested in design work for VR for use in architecture and the film industry, the coronavirus pandemic brought Daniel's work to stop

Caligula bears a striking resemblance to Obola!

That's pretty cool. They may indeed have looked very much like the new photos and it makes them more human.

He could have saved all that trouble and just asked any of the Struldbrug demorats (Biden, Pelosi, Sanders, etc.) what those Roman emperors looked like.

Having lived in Italy and visited many times, my engineering background attracted me to study their amazing works of civil engineering and architecture. I have visited many museums, many ancient Roman sites since the 1960s, most recently a couple of years ago.
There are many superb busts of most all of their leaders and general, many in excellent condition, so I have had some idea of what these men actually looked like. I think I could recognize Julius Caesar if I ran into him, for example. Sorry he wasn't in the group.
Vespasian looks a lot like LBJ. I think Titus' great-great-great......grandson used to work at my company.

Vitellius looks like Auric Goldfinger, and Vespasian could pass for LBJ.

Fascinating project but remember, Voshart is a hollywood artist. I would go with the original sculpter's version even if chipped and cracked. The skin tone would be Italian in all cases although all we inherited is white marble.

I also lived in Italy for 10 years. The architecture and engineering is incredible. They were brilliant with Pompeii.
I thought Vespasian also looked like LBJ. Did Romans get Civil Rights?

Let's say it's a good guess. Without skeletal remains, a really accurate forensic portrayal is impossible, and even then, its often barely recognizable by living relatives or when compared to photographs
It's an interesting exercise, but of questionable value.

I saw busts of ordinary Romans in a Toronto museum years ago. They all had very life-like qualities such as; moles, weak chins, high foreheads, unflattering noses, and some even smiled. They were not idealized at all. The gallery was labeled “Roman Portraiture.” I felt strange as if I was looking at real people who lived two thousand years ago, having the same contemporary appearance as people today.

Pictures of Cuomo, Grinchen Witchmore of Michigan, Edwards of Louisiana, Newsome of Kalifornia and the rest of the Dem. tyrants will be what they'll look at 1000 years from now.

I've seen Caligula. He's in a painting, wearing a blue dress, hanging in Epstein's mansion.
