SALT LAKE CITY – Some Black Lives Matter protesters in Salt Lake City could face up to life in prison if they’re convicted of splashing red paint and smashing windows during a protest, a potential punishment that stands out among demonstrators arrested around the country and one that critics say doesn’t fit the alleged crime.
The felony criminal mischief charges are more serious because they carry a gang enhancement. Prosecutors said Wednesday that’s justified because the protesters worked together to cause thousands of dollars in damage, but watchdogs called the use of the 1990s-era law troubling, especially in the context of criminal justice reform and minority communities.
They should be put on road crews and made to clean all of it up and help rebuild damage all across the country.

Some laws just aren't fair when applied to anarchists.

Sounds like Salt Lake City will be experiencing a teacher's shortage soon.

So she's concerned about the effect of this on peoples rights to protest. Peaceful protests and wanton destruction of public and private property are two different things entirely. The prosecutor needs to be fair and treat them like Republicans.

FTA: ''It’s really frustrating and scary ... I just feel so much concern for what this means for the right to protest in general.''
It wasn't a protest, it was a violent, destructive, unlawful riot. The democrats corrupt the meaning of the word ''protest'' to lie about their actions. ''Peaceful protests'' have resulted in burning, destroying, looting, and murder.
Life in prison is the right punishment for the crimes.

Special people get special treatment. They are all going to wake up one day soon and find out what "special" really means. Hang 'em. Cut off their hands like the muslims do. If they were not conducting this mayhem in the best country on Earth they would all have been machine-gunned and buried in mass graves by now.

FTA "but watchdogs called the use of the 1990s-era law troubling, especially in the context of criminal justice reform and minority communities."
Is this person trying to say it is unfair to prosecute with a gang enhancement because all people in minority communities are in gangs, it's the norm?

Shock and awe by domestic terrorist maggots that the DOJ has the gall to hold them accountable for vandalism and arson. They didn’t see this coming. The Democrats and CNN supported them. What could go wrong?

We have to be careful. If any of these rabid vermin were somehow sentenced to a prison work crew, it would probably be a death sentence. It is a safe bet that none of them every did a hard day of physical labor doing jobs they would never have volunteered for. You know, the kind of thing many Americans have done most of their lives.
I have some compassion for well meaning idealists, dreamers and compassionate people who have no clue about human nature or how to actually get anything constructive done. I have zero compassion for anyone in these mobs who isn't trying to stop the destruction. The spectators who run with them for the action and a chance to get a video, deserve the tear gas and rubber bullets directed at the criminal next to them. The leaders, the paid goons and the sadistic vandals do deserve life. This is outright sedition and often attempted murder and if they find the punk who blinded two cops, instant death sentence.

So many times people have found Utah laws that did not match USA laws inconvenient.
If the BLM folks had not been able to carry own weed into Utah and were wanting to buy liquor over the counter in grocery stores there would have been more bewilderment I expect.
