Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday revealed a plan to buy properties around the city and turn them into permanent affordable housing, after moving more than 10,000 homeless people into hotels during the COVID-19 pandemic and shaming rich residents who have left the city as 'fair weather friends'. At a press conference on Friday, he did not say which type of buildings the city had its eye on and the city is refusing to give more details, citing 'privacy concerns'. Blasio only said there was an 'opportunity to get creative' now when it came to finding housing for New York's homeless.

With his tax base leaving town, how does he plan on paying for these buildings? Oh, well... what's money to a big deal like him, huh?

Given the number of people fleeing NYC, he has lots of empty buildings to chose from.

I took ECON 101 in college as a requirement for my major. I learned plenty about the law of supply and demand, and how it applied in many different scenarios. Given that, I am convinced that no liberal or Marxist types ever sat foot in an ECON classroom; either that, or they flunked royally. I think about that every time I read about people fleeing Marxist utopias like DeBlasio’s NY. The trouble with liberal politics is demand (consumers) insanely exceeding supply (producers).

#3: My first Econ professor in my MBA program was a hippie communist visiting professor, who believed he had reduced the entire concept of macroeconomics into seven curves on a graph.
The final test was seven graphs, with a single curve on them, with no scale , no numbers, no other data. For each each graph we were required to write - exactly- 200 words describing what each graph meant in his system of Marxist theory..
Maybe De Blasio studied under him.

NYC is going down hill economically until Mayor Bill de Blasio is no longer in office. Already 15,000 restaurants are out of business permanently and the number is increasing. Most are tenants who are no longer paying rent. Related taxes will be lost forever. This is just one example. Who knows how many other landlords are receiving no income from their real property. It's going to take years before NYC recovers. Sometimes I wonder whether de Blasio is doing his damage on purpose.

So, THIS is what the leftist Utopia looks like. Mistakenly, I was assuming they wanted perpetual rainbows, "perfect" temperatures, smiley faces, a brilliantly clean environment, sweet smelling flowers in your hair and an Earthly community where love trumps hate. Since they are commies, I should have known better. Every day I am thankful that I was not born with the commie mental disease. To pay for the buildings, Warren Wilhem Jr. is probably using the money "saved" from defunding the police.

The law of supply and demand informs us that even more homeless will floid into NYC as the weather cools for nice digs in a hotel.
It also informs us that NYC's tourism and business travelers will drop off, further exacerbating the financial decline.
The wealthy will not return for higher taxes for the privledge of rubbing elbows with people urinating in the streets.
It also informs us that NYC will have no choice but to increase taxes and fees on everyone. Thus driving all taxpaying classes out of the city.
And then what happens when the money dries up and all of these homeless are forced out of the hotels?

#8 and #10....the ONLY good news out of all of this when the city hits rock bottom, is that in a few years when NYC starts to return, (when they elect another Rudy) then real estate will be very cheap compared to where it was....BTW, wonder if Trump Tower is still there in a couple years??

A smart guy like de Blasio could have a bright future. Biden, are you paying attention? You need a guy like this in Washington.
Doubling down on stupid is exactly what we expect from this pothead clown. Make it cozy and comfortable for the dregs of society while insulting the taxpayers and driving them out of town. I don't know why the police are wasting their time stopping people with out-of-state license plates from coming into the city. There can't be that many out there who want to enter New York unless they are vultures who want to feast on the ruins.
This situation is why Nasty Piglousy is demanding two trillion dollars at the federal level, to bail out places like New York City that are hopelessly falling into the pit of debt and decadence. Donald Trump can not even consider doing this or the terrorists will have won.

One of the inherent curses of capitalism is that it provides surpluses of nearly everything and thus gives all the stupid people the belief that this is the way things are no matter who is in charge or what goofy/crazy policies they implement. This is exactly the situation we are in, with about 50% of our people being terminally stupid and thinking this insanity is no big thing.

If de Blasio were to lease the Empire State Building he could fill the place with just about every houseless person in New York City in one sweep, set up an auxiliary mayor’s office there, and have a merry old time chatting with his constituents.

Great opportunity for conservatives. Quit this open the "schools" nonsense. Let them close. No money for schools and "teachers". Then the empty school buildings can be used to house the homeless. Kill two birds with one stone as the old wisdom of the past tells us. Conservatives won't of course. No guts.

Yeah right Mayor Wilhelm, this will bring the rich back to NYC! Basic rule of economics - when you tax something you get less of it, when you subsidize something you get more of it. And economics is a behavioral science, not finance. This rule simply illustrates how people (both rich and homeless) respond to incentives. It’s human nature.

Like what Castro did to Cuba and Chavez did to Venezuela, these two communists took two of the best economies in the Caribbean and destroyed them and their countries. And, as communists do, they blamed everybody but themselves. To this day, under communist rule there is no stability in site. Enter the pathetic communist DeBlasio, following the same communist script that is leading to the same outcome. HE blames everyone else, not his communist policies. See, you can learn from history, but you can't learn from history if you ignore history. Got it.

Liberalism on display. Cater to the losers who neither produce or contribute anything and stick a knife into those who do. Then act shocked when the producers and contributors flip you the bird on their way out of town. The sad truth is that these are the same people who voted for him.

So the mayor wants producing taxpayers to be "ashamed" they left the city. Why should those residents feel shame? Should people who want to live in a safe, secure, calm, law abiding area; who want to protect their families from harm be ashamed for moving to places that are able to provide that security?
The one who should be ashamed is the mayor who was elected by a very small percentage of voters. Sadly, he's probably thrilled that he was able to destroy in a short period of time what once was a great city. I'm sure that was his goal from day one. I had always enjoyed my visits there. No way will I ever visit again.

DeBlasio could leave tomorrow and NYC would be in even worse shape, because the Democrats vying for the mayoralty and other citywide elected positions will make DeBlasio look like Bill Buckley. NY is doomed. The state chair of the Republican party is quivering under his bed, so there is no Republican presence in the state or city. There are no viable candidates who could even fill Giuliani's socks let alone shoes. As a lifelong New Yorker to see the city and state deteriorate so rapidly under DeBlasio and Benito is shocking. RIP New York.

NYC needs to remove the awful scaffolding they impose on the sidewalk of most high-rise buildings. Then, stop painting 5th Avenue with the name of a Marxist anti-nuclear family organization.
They should then re-elect their best Son ever, he who changed the skyline and built the skating ring. Viva Trump!
