The video below is close to, but distinct from schadenfreude, because while I enjoy the utter dismay, I sympathize with the teenager who has discovered the extent to which government grabs money away from those who earn it. Welcome to the club, young man! And be aware that the harder you work and more successful you are, the more the government is going to take away from you. (snip) this video has special charm, in part because the narrator, who may well be the dad, is so understanding of what lies ahead. This is an absolute classic.

This reminds me of that old joke: Who the hell is FICA, and why is he getting all my money?

That's exactly how the rest of us would react if we actually saw our true tax bill. There's a reason why there is a complex matrix of things that get taxed, it's all designed to keep us in the dark as to the actual tax burden those of us who actually pay that is.

Tax Freedom day is roughly April 24. So this kid, and all of us, are basically indentured servents tot he US goobernment until April 24. We get to work 5 months of the year to pa the goobernment, and only 7 months a year for ourselves and family.

Too bad his dad didn't tell him just how much would be taken out of his paycheck if we start giving free college and free health care to every single person who comes here illegally.

Nothing like a cold, hard slap in the face from the Tax-Man, is it? Get used to it, kid.

I have seen this type of scene dozens of times. In a normal summer I would be running a Boy Scout Camp, but not this year because the democrat governor of New York banned overnight youth camps in that state. But, back to the story--when the first paycheck is issued to my young staff of high schoolers and college kids, I get a lot of questions about why they didn't "receive" the weekly amount that was promised in their job contract. I take the opportunity to tell them about the tax system, socialism, and the sneaky way the government does "payroll deduction" so you don't notice how much they tend to extract from your earnings. The working population would be much more aware of the tax system if payroll deductions were eliminated, and every April we had to pay our annual tax bill all at once.

First. Back in the early 90's Tx Representative Dick Army had a great idea - let workers get their gross pay and at the end of each month have them write a check and send it in to the Treasury for all their withholdings for the month that were / are being taken out each paycheck. Second. Illegal aliens have an advantage over American workers by getting paid cash, under the table simply because their employer doesn't have to worry about all the paper work and tax withholdings they have to deal with for American workers.

Tell him that someone has to pay for all his buddies on welfare and the ones in prison for drug dealing and the other crimes they commit.

Welcome to the world where the rich don’t pay their fair share of taxes. It only goes up from there kid. But be assured the government doesn’t take away your money they just take their money.

Contrary to #9 I saw responsible black men fathering their sons. I saw two men who obviously have been working their whole adult lives; that was a nice vehicle in which they were sitting, nice clothes and speaking in a normal manner. They took Joe-Joe through an adult right-of-passage in an understanding guy-way. I found the video rather endearing and reminded me of my first check...from Toys R Us at Christmas time. LOL
Welcome to adulthood, Joe-Joe. God bless you with a meaningful life.

I saw the same scene as #12.
It would have been refreshing, though, if the Dad had informed him that voting for Democrats will always make that check smaller.
Why do people not get the connection?

The best part of the whole video is when the kid says “but they didn’t ask me...”

So many of today's youth are ignorant of the realities of life. I KNEW from day 1 of starting my first job that taxes would be withdrawn when I got paid. Of course, when I was young, abortions, protesting, and riots were only a fantasies, and family was the keystone of life. Those days are long gone.

I was that kid. I remember my first check and seeing how much less I got than I expected. I felt his pain. Lol!
Hopefully he takes the same lesson and grows up to be a responsible adult who votes intelligently instead of for communists/Democrats.

#s 12 and 14: I saw the same thing, but we don't know our kid's friends, and don't want the kid to think it is better not to work because crime does not pay in the long run.

Those who never make enough will always complain about the rich. The rich will always complain about the poor and the politicians they have to support. And the middle class will always complain about not making enough. ....and the millennials demonstrating for more free stuff. Life is not Fair. Yet, America is still a land of opportunity. You can choose to be Rich and choose to be Poor. Be productive or a burden, be a winner or a loser.

Don't worry, kid. Your chest will swell with pride when you learn your money helped fund a battery charging station for Chevy Volts at one of our embassies!

I'm entirely with #12. These good men were speaking English, not Ebonics, and there wasn't a single "M-F'n" uttered. If more African Americans were like these good people, this country would be a far better and safer place to live. These good men deserve our praise with no unfairly judgmental, snide comments. From what I've seen on television and on the Internet, the majority of the anarchists in Portland are white millennials.

My daughter had a similar experience with her first paycheck as a teen shampoo girl at a local salon. She was outraged about the taxes. Our response to her anger was to tell her, “Never, ever vote for a democrat.”

I'll never forget nearly 60 years ago when I had to join a union to get a summer job. I had that same look when I received my first paycheck.

#12 Every nonprofit helping minorities get ahead tells them about the racial wealth gap and never talk to them about wealthy blacks living nearby.
Wait until he becomes an adult and they take more.
