To Mask or Not to Mask

I have for most of my adult life been a practicing hypochondriac. So, it will come as no surprise to you to hear that I am a zealous reader of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). I find something of interest in practically every issue. Recently I found myself engrossed in the thoughts of Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who is also, if I am not mistaken, a noted bird-watcher. I, of course, know very little about the birds. Yet, thanks to Dr. Redfield and the JAMA, I am now very much up-to-date in my knowledge

Author says wear a mask, then presents no evidence whatsoever for his decision. I have no problem with author deciding to wear a mask. What I do have a problem with is his deciding for me to wear a mask. I haven't liked Kellyanne Conway or Trump deciding for me recently either. Trump shut the economy down, and the ramifications of this whole fiasco is far worse than if he had done nothing.

Tyrrell is for the birds. Sure, there are scofflaws (scoffmasks?) who don't wear masks in public, but most of us have been doing so since April, and it hasn't made any difference at all. How is another four weeks going to make any difference? Doesn't Tyrrell realize that the issue is political, not medical?

Not.
'Doctors wear masks!' - tiresome and misleading. Their masks are sterile. Their masks are changed at short, regular intervals. The rest of the room is sterilized. They usually wear other PPE.
What have most people got? Cloth. You can see the sun, even a light bulb through it. It is woven. It has pores. Holes. Gaps. Most people aren't washing theirs regularly.
Some geniuses are carrying a one-time-use mask around as their everyday mask. They hang it on their rear view mirror (!?!) when not in use.
The cloth or 'Pitta' mask is 98% superstition. Do you know how small a virus is? A bacterium is 3-5 microns. CV is .125 microns. Web site study: 'The Pitta mask captured an astounding 0% of 0.3-micron particles.'
That's zero. As in none. As in useless.

Wearing a mask is a perfect way for the liberals and those in power to “see” who is complying and I’m sorry to say, it looks to be at about 90% right now.
The doctor in the article says 6 to 8 weeks and we get this under control. Riiiight, and I have ocean front property to sell you in Colorado.
You can bet, that even if every single one of us wore them for 8 weeks, they would say “we need to extend this for another 8 weeks” and on and on it would go.

I'm anti mask but we lost that battle.
Masks aren't mandatory in my county, you just can't get into any business without one.

Trump did not shut the economy down. That was done by the governors. I've lived through the polio epidemic and every type of flu and other diseases since then and didn't have to wear a mask, why now?. No mask for me Mr. Tyrrell. By the way, why "stand at two paces" if masks are so great?

I wear one in stores but I don't wear one outside. I'm not around a lot of people then and it's too hot now. I also wash my hands a lot.

If you say you have a medical condition, stores will almost always let you in. By law they can't even ask what that condition is... HIPPA laws. Try it. I go to stores all the time and have only been denied once.

I only wear a mask in stores which require them. It goes on just before entry and off as soon as I clear the exit. I have many concerns with masking and most are listed in the article and by commenters except the one which concerns me most. Ironically it is the same issue as the climate change alarmists - CO2. A mask traps the CO2 we exhale, is reinhaled and starves us of the O2 we need for proper respiration. Short periods OK but I worry about long term use especially with kids in school, daycare, etc.

Here in Colorado, thanks to the edict passed down from on high by the Fairy Prince, you can’t enter a store, a bank or any business without one if those stupid masks. It would be just as effective if I wiped my butt with it and threw it away.

If masks are as effective as the "experts" say, then require everyone to wear a mask AND reopen all churches, businesses, schools, sports and music venues, beaches and pools, etc. without limits on the venue's capacity. Masks either make life safe or they don't, put it to a test by fully reopening the country.

Well, I had an experience today at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I work on a floor of a building that rarely sees visitors or even medical staff, and if medical staff or visitors are on the floor, then they're lost. While going to do my job, I immediately ran into a nurse with a face mask telling me to back up and move around the corner. The nurse was accompanied by a mid twenties young man NOT wearing a mask. I asked if this was a Covid case, and was told yes. They proceeded to get on an elevator where the nurse told me it was ok to proceed. I didn't take that elevator, but what got my attention was that neither the Covid patient or the nurse was wearing a mask, and what the hell were they doing on this floor where patients and medical staff don't go, and just where were they coming from to board elevators on this floor?

Masks are just the beginning of the Woes. A local Walmart super center recently went cashless. Ours no longer takes cash at the self scan. Just a matter of time. Vaccine will be mandatory to retain employment at all large corporations. Of course it will have a chip for verification. It's coming, folks.

#10 Don't give our "leaders", or "experts" any more ideas. Doing what you mentioned might sound to them like a good idea since it might make the mask sticky to help trap germs.

Interesting that three people in the photo telling us to wear masks aren't wearing masks. And they are also within 6 feet of each other. My county now has an ordinance requiring masks unless you have a religious objection and then you have to obtain an exemption from a judge. I'll compromise. In public I wear the Quid Pro Joe mask and inside my hovel I'll wear my Lone Ranger mask. If the dims defund the police who will you call to report people not wear a mask?

I hate these mask rules. They are not for my protection, no I am supposed to be doing it for the good of others. This was what we called “legalism” in my fundamentalist youth; no evidence that we shouldn’t drink, dance or smoke, but if it keeps others from stumbling than you just have to do it. Sorry. No thanks.

The virus measures 50 to 100 nanometers. A sheet of paper’s thickness is 100,000. Even medical masks don’t filter a virus. Read the disclaimer. For 37 years the CDC has told us masks don’t prevent the passage of a virus.
They should be worn by sick people who are coughing around others. They are causing more harm than good when worn by healthy people.
If masks worked they would not have released all of those convicted criminals in prison. They would have merely forced them all to wear masks.

I was perfectly willing to wear a mask to engage in public life after two weeks of lockdown. I advocated it as the immediate solution to the problem. Instead, they kept us locked up for more than six weeks. It was only when our governments were preprared to release us to public life, again, that we started hearing about how masks are really, really effective at stopping the virus.
Well, then why did we stay locked down for so long?
The only thing of which I'm sure is, there are a significant number of people in public life who will say and do anything if it advantages them politically. I count masks very high on that list.
