The leaders of four German states wrote to Congress asking for a halt to Washington's troop withdrawal plan from the country, Reuters reported Sunday.
The premiers of the four states—all of which have U.S. bases—addressed their letters to 13 members of Congress, including Sens. Mitt Romney (R., Utah) and Jim Inhofe (R., Okla.). Inhofe chairs the Armed Services Committee, while Romney is a leading member of the Foreign Relations Committee.
"We therefore ask you to support us as we strive not to sever the bond of friendship but to strengthen it, and to secure the U.S. presence in Germany and Europe in the future,

They sure want to keep our troops in their states to spend those Yankee dollars. Is that the only approach they have considered? No mention of demanding that their federal government pony up and be a PARTNER in NATO, not a a parasite partner. If Germany wants to chum up to Russia, let them do it, but the very thought of that kind of relationship tells me that they aren't doing any better at teaching history in Germany than we are in the USA.

The deterrence to the Russians the ministers speak about now is centered on only two combat maneuver brigades in USAREUR, and one of them is in Italy. There is one combat aviation brigade and one field artillery brigade, everyone else are support troops. The total force is 25,000 which is one-tenth of it's Cold War strength. Some deterrence. The ministers are reaching the bottom of the barrel for rationale to keep us over there.

If deep state Romney is on one side of the issue, I will take the other side.

I don't have any hard facts, but if there are 35,000 u.s. troops in germany spending anywhere from $1k to $3k per month on the german economy per troop, it's pretty clear why germany doesn't want them to leave. Move them all to Poland where I understand the U.S. is actually liked.

....And on the other hand, in Japan a provincial government (Okinawa) and its people have sound reasons for asking that U.S. forces be reduced or removed. The central Japanese government is opposed and the U.S. government is uninterested.

Ha. They hope we don't "sever the bond of friendships" which WE pay for. Like the gold-digging girlfriend of a rich old man, they suddenly become real friendly when it looks like he's gonna break it off.

The "bonds of friendship" are nothing more than $$$$. NATO is an idea that has outlived its practical value. We don't ask Germany to base troops on NATO's western flank. Why should the USA defend the eastern front? Seems those Euros have it all figured out.

So the Germans want our troops and $$$ to remain, while the mayors of Portland and Seattle want Federal troops out. Strange world, perhaps the Germans understand better the result of anarchy?

This indicates to me that Germany is in far worse shape than they care to reveal to the world. The great muslim experiment to bolster the work force didn't work out so well for you, did it. Don't feel bad, Angela, it didn't work out well for anybody else who tried it either.

I have no problem with the asking but they should not be putting themselves in the middle of domestic politics. They should only be asking the person who's job it is to deal with foreign policy, the Commander And Chief.

Time to stand on your own two feet Germany. But you can't can you? You cannot afford to pay for security and social programs. It would be virtually impossible. We are not your Uncle Sugar, and your internal problems are your own to solve.

US Troops spend money off base to the tune of millions and that is why Germany does not want the troops pulled out. Another reason is many Americans married German girls or men and they would leave the country with their mates. There are actually Armed Forces Exchange Service auto station on the Autobahn. The troops are so interwoven into the German culture they do not want them to leave.

Notice the German states in the southern part of the country are requesting we keep our troops there. This is the more conservative part of the country, and basically is the Catholic part or the country. That may not be relevant to the issue, however. Historically the southern part of Germany was annexed last by Prussia, and it resulted in religious persecution by the dominant Ev. Lutheran government in Berlin. So, they may be more guarded in their approval of the big government in Berlin, i.e. less progressive/Marxist. Just my opinion.

The problem #25, is that generations of GIs married Germans and decided to homestead and retire there. They adopted a third way culture and politics as long as the US provided medical care, commissary etc. These people are passing on or their dream bars and gasthauses have gone bust with so few troops there. There is no reason to keep these support facilities or the few combat units in Europe (except maybe Poland). Cut the cord and go native or go home.

Now you want US to stay ? Want to pay ?
Reminds us of PR screaming about closing the base because they hated the noise. After the based closed and left, they cried because it hurt their economy. Stop whining.
