The sheriff does not have enough deputies to be of any use. The Governor needs to put the state police and national guard in Jacksonville, along with federal agencies.

He's an elected sheriff.
Pandering to what he imagines is the sentiment. Maybe even looking for tix to the Vanity Fair party.

No worries, Sheriff Mike. We Ldotters will come out and provide the necessary security. You can count on it. I only have a Smith & Wesson 45 MP and an AR15. And a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380 to carry. Will these do it?

Reminds me of the words of a great mayor on the eve of a convention in his city: "Gentlemen, let's get the thing straight. The police aren't there to create disorder, the police are there to PRESERVE disorder!" I have a feeling Jerry Rubin, Rennie Davis, Abbie Hoffman, Dave Dellinger, John Froines, Tom Hayden, and Lee Weiner are looking up and smiling, despite the blazing eternal heat surrounding them.
Jacksonville is the largest city in the lower 48, square-mileage wise. There must be a few extra folks who can be deputized.

The governor will provide National Guard troops if needed. Maybe we can hope for live ammo, too.

My retired last boss from work is about 6 years older than I am, and we got to be good biking buddies and he told me about 1968, when I was in HS, and he was in the National Guard. During the riots, the burning and looting crew was heading south on a particular large N-S road, and his unit was told to set up on a particular
cross street, which was where a lot of the businesses started. They were issued M-14 rifles and live ammo and their orders were
"Don't let them get south of this street. Whatever it takes."
He says he was glad that the rioters saw the armed Guardsmen and decided not to try them on, because they would have fired on them. The rioters turned around and the looting and burning was contained.
Sometimes a show of force with some real resolve behind it is all that is needed to stop the rioting.

Settle down Sheriff Buford T Justice. Its not like the Republicans are planning on smuggling beer from Texarkana to Jacksonville. There will be Federal Law Enforcement, Staties, National Guard and lots of concealed carry aficionados willing to lend a hand.

Put out the call to veterans to provide private security. The terrorist scum will not be able to get near the place. No charge!
