A major teachers union is claiming that the re-opening of schools in its district cannot occur without several substantial policy provisions in place, including a "moratorium" on charter schools and the defunding of local police.
United Teachers Los Angeles, a 35,000-strong union in the Los Angeles Unified School District, made those demands in a policy paper it released this week. The organization called on local authorities to "keep school campuses closed when the semester begins on Aug. 18."
The union outlined numerous major provisions it says will be necessary to reopen schools again, including sequestering students

I am quite sure the teachers have been getting paid all during this shutdown. With this move by their union, all pay and benefits should stop as of right now, and not start up again until school starts. No unemployment benefits for the teachers or any union workers either. Those lazy bass terds need a taste of what the general public has been receiving lately.

Remember what the head of the teacher's union stated when asked about the students: 'we'll be concerned about them when they have the right to vote.' So, between not voting, and not paying any union dues (which go directly to democRAT pockets, the 'children' are not anywhere on their list of concerns.

Of course, they’re serious. The corrupt .teacher’s Union OWNS the schools, teachers and you kids’ futures! They are an activist group with very nefarious interests. Look at who they fund! Trans whatever, PP, immigration of any and everybody, why, they sell “insurance” to their teachers but hardly ever step up to defend them. They need to be dissolved!

Students are not any more vulnerable to COVID-19 then to influenza. That is the science. Open the schools. Expand charter schools to meet the demand. There are plenty of landlords with empty buildings that would like house them in exchange for rent.
Ideally as long as the lock down is in place no government worker should be paid and all benefits suspended.

These demands have nothing to do with educating students. This is nothing but left wing radical blackmail. The planting of radical seeds is now starting to bare fruit. The union doesn't like charter schools. Why? Competition. The demand for defunding the police because of the murder of blacks? The numbers do not support that charge. The union does not follow the carnage that goes on in Chicago every weekend. Double digit victims shot. Double digit murders. many of them young people. And the underlying factor in 90% percent of these crimes. Black on black crimes. Blacks killing blacks. That's the problem that no one wants to talk about. I'd be curious to find out where the union gets its funds from? Mr. Soros maybe?

LA teachers have done a poor job of educating their students, yet they demand that charter schools be curtailed so parents of those students have no alternative opportunity for a quality education for their students.
Charter schools should be promoted as a way to provide alternative, quality education for minority students.

A person of my close aquantence taught in both a charter school and a public school. With the charter only extending to 6th grade, she said the charter students are going to be bored with they have to transfer. They would be going over material they knew, only waiting for the others to catch up, which some would never do completely. The charter was disciplined, studious, and loving. The public school was much less disciplined; it was noisy, chaotic at times. There is variety in both types of schools, but on average, I suspect this is a common situation.

Well there you go. Anyone surprised? I once sat on a school board and was incredibly disappointed to discover that their agenda had absolutely nothing to do with children or curriculum. It was all about money and influence. School children have been ignored for a very long time.
Have you ever heard teachers interviewed during one of their marches while on strike. They are required to have teaching degrees from accredited colleges and seem barely able to express themselves. It is appalling and only getting worse.

#7, PDT has already stated that he will pull funding from any public school which remains closed. When the left went nuts, he simply asked why a closed school would need funding at all. But that’s way to logical for leftists to absorb.

Defund the teachers' unions. These groups of democrat voters put money first and the education of children last. Many small towns have nearly gone bankrupt while being squeezed for money to build new schools, pay high salaries and benefits to too many teachers and being forced to support the democrat party through property taxes.

First re-outlaw all public sector (includes teachers) unions and everything else will follow. Union thugs led by the left have been running the country since the sainted martyr signed an EO allowing them. They have been pushing us leftward and deliberately mis-informing our school children for three generations and counting. Kids can't do simple arithmetic or sign even sign their own names -- forget history -- they get the left's version of it.

Think about it. Now teachers unions are putting demands in our cities. You see, these communist coul care less about your children. Sure get rid of Charter Schools which are in direct competition with public schools. Its easier to indoctrinate your kids when they're all under the same umbrella. Now they even want to control the police. This is what unions do. All they do is disrupt, collect their dues and with your dues they support every communist campaign. This is how they suppress blacks in democratic/communist cities like Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore and others. They refuse to give black kids school choice. Keep'em dumb and you keep their vote. Its been working for over 60 years. Wake up...

An education apparatus that delivers such poor results is in no position to make demands. The leftists are currently emboldened by the lack of a response towards rioters who can deface and destroy with impunity anything between a statue of Frederick Douglass and one of a kitchen sink. Classroom teachers and brick and mortar schools are no longer the only game in town. The COVID-19 crisis has shined a light on education and the leftist teachers are the scurrying cockroaches running around in circles.

Teachers wanting to defund the police.
And when they are cowering in their classrooms as a shooter has hours (not just minutes like if the cops were on their way) to walk around campus and shoot anyone he wants, I guess they will find comfort in knowing that the city will provide social workers to comfort their survivors.
If my kids were young today, I would be home schooling. No ifs, ands, or buts!!!!!

These demands that have nothing to do with the teachers union, like defunding the police, federal bailout of school districts, Medicare For All, shuttering of independent charter schools, new CA taxes on the wealthy, etc., have NOTHING TO DO with the public school teachers union, is none of their concern, and are impossible to meet by the California Dept of Education, because they have no jurisdiction over them.
In a word, the demands are CHILDIDH, and have nothing to do with public school teachers, and are beyond the teacher union's say.

LA spends $13,000+ per student. Offer all parents vouches of $12,000 per child to go to school of choice and decrease the school budget accordingly. Also, if public schools are not open, no pay for public school teachers.

First, YES, they are serious, and it's about getting rid of any sort of competition.
Charter schools are popular with Hispanic and African-American parents looking for a better opportunity for their child.
This could be a winning slogan asking why they don't want your child to have the best chance for success?
Also, this would present a good time to talk about breaking up the excessively large LAUSD system, and use a lot of the same rhetoric about not being truly representative.

Of course, if they don't want to work because of "safety" considerations (Does anyone listen to sanitation men with the same fear?) they don't have to. They can stay home and feed themselves some other way. As the abortionists say: "If you don't want an abortion, don't have one."
