Trenton, N.J.—New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy joined the leaders of both houses of the state legislature in supporting the phasing out of the title of "freeholder" within state government, calling it an "outdated designation." Freeholders are a unique part of the state's political system. The term comes from the Garden State's first constitution which was written in 1776 and declared a county representative must be worth "50 pounds proclamation money, clear estate in the same and have resided in the county in which they claim a vote for twelve months immediately preceding the election."(Snip) “As our nation tears down symbols of injustice,

No requirement for literacy, eh?
In 1796 (the first truly competitive presidential election), John Adams beat Thomas Jefferson with popular votes of 35,726 to 31,115, and electoral college votes of 71 to 68..
Only five states held popular votes. New Jersey did not. Its legislature appointed seven electors who all voted for Adams and Pinckney.

When I lived in Burlington County NJ, we had Chosen Freeholders. I always had to think when I said that for fear that I would say Frozen Cheeseholder.

The term “Freeholder” appears to be a traditional term in the State of New Jersey. These days dumping anything that is traditional is not going to hurt any leftist and liberal Democrats as that is a part of their political platform.

I'm astonished these pols have so much free time on their hands and such a trouble-free society, such that they have time to focus on these inconsequential matters.

I actually agree with this. Chosen Freeholder sounds kind of silly.

While phasing out "freeholder" from government, can they also phase out the freeloaders from government?

These New Jersey Legislators seem to have too much spare time. This proposal regarding "Freeholders" is not as simple as it may seem - and there will be costs. There are 21 counties in New Jersey. These counties together contain 565 municipalities, 250 boroughs, 52 cities, 15 towns, 244 townships, and 4 villages. It's probable that most, if not all, of these entities have ordinances that refer to "Freeholders." Are these entities going to amend their ordinances' references to "Freeholder" to avoid potential future confusion? Moreover New Jersey has female as well as African-American Freeholders.

I grew up in Bergen County, NJ. When I was a kid I thought the term was 'freeloader.' Meanwhile, the state gov't is increasingly dysfunctional, witness the fiasco at the motor vehicle offices this week. they were opened for the first time in months. people were on line from dawn to closing in the heat without getting in. A little bit of forethought would have opened the offices early (since the staff apparently reported a couple of hours before regular hours), extended the hours at the end of the day, and kept a count of those on line and handed out priority numbers if they had to come back the next day (which, of course, not everyone can do. Like we live for the motor vehicle bureau.) Murphy was on the news saying how unacceptable was the situation. A little bit of planning, just a smidgen, could have saving a lot of people a lot of pain. But they have time to obsess over an obscure term dating back more than 200 years.

What about the word Governor? Isn't that a word that slaves used to describe their 'masters'?

The better days when only landowners could vote is now Problematic, and in NJ, even reflects the days when we wuz slaves. With this issue resolved and with NJ reconfirming its disavowal of having been a slave state, Governor Phool is now free to disarm the public pension time bomb that at some point is guaranteed to level the state economy.
