Homicides in Memphis are up more than 30% percent compared to this time last year. While the number is alarming, a different statistic is even more brutal—18 children and teens have been killed in 2020. So far this year, 120 Memphians have been killed in unjustifiable homicides, up from 92 at the same point last year, per city data. Officials in Memphis begged the public Wednesday for both information and further community involvement in measures like neighborhood watches and community programming.(Snip) Of the 18 children and teens killed this year, 14 were murdered and three were killed in accidental shootings.

More than 100 lawmakers are urging the U.S. Department of Defense to immediately end the military ban on transgender troops put in place by the Trump administration in 2019. On Wednesday, Rep. Suzan DelBene, a Democrat from Washington, joined by 116 members of Congress, signed a letter addressed to Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and Attorney General William Barr calling to the end of the policy, which they called “an attack on transgender service members who are risking their lives to serve our country.” The move comes just weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Trenton, N.J.—New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy joined the leaders of both houses of the state legislature in supporting the phasing out of the title of "freeholder" within state government, calling it an "outdated designation." Freeholders are a unique part of the state's political system. The term comes from the Garden State's first constitution which was written in 1776 and declared a county representative must be worth "50 pounds proclamation money, clear estate in the same and have resided in the county in which they claim a vote for twelve months immediately preceding the election."(Snip) “As our nation tears down symbols of injustice,

Wells Fargo is preparing to cut thousands of jobs later this year in an effort to reduce costs, according to a report from Bloomberg Law. The plans being drawn up by Wells Fargo executives could eventually lead to tens of thousands of jobs being cut, according to Bloomberg, citing people with knowledge of the confidential talks. Wells Fargo declined to comment on the report. Wells Fargo Chief Financial Officer John Shrewsberry had alluded to cuts in June. "There will come a time, and I assume at some point this year, when we get back to executing on programs that are in place and some

To help small businesses survive the pandemic, Wells Fargo announced Thursday that it is donating the $400 million in fees it earned off the federal Paycheck Protection Program to nonprofit organizations that primarily assist Black and other minority owners. Wells Fargo, which lost many business customers after bungling their PPP applications, wound up processing more than 185,000 PPP loans worth a total of $10.4 billion, the fifth highest loan total in the banking industry, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. “We can see that small businesses are hurting,” said Jenny Flores, head of small business growth philanthropy at Wells Fargo.

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a large swath of eastern Oklahoma is actually an Indian reservation belonging to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, meaning that hundreds of prosecutions could be tossed because the state does not have jurisdiction there, including in part of Tulsa. The 5-4 decision notes that only federal prosecutors have jurisdiction over American Indians on the reservation, which includes most of Tulsa, the state’s second-largest city. Justice Neil M. Gorsuch joined the court’s four liberal justices in the majority decision in McGirt v. Oklahoma.(Snip) The federal government established the reservation in the 1830s with the Creek

Footage posted online this week captured the moment a vandal sprayed graffiti outside a Lower Manhattan courthouse, right under the noses of several cops—who do nothing but watch. The video, posted by the Sergeants’ Benevolent Association on Tuesday and taken in broad daylight, shows the man tagging the base of a lamppost in front of the Surrogate’s Courthouse at 31 Chambers St., which had already been vandalized amid Occupy City Hall protests last week. After the man finishes his scrawl, he strolls away, as three cops on the corner—and four on the next block—stand idle. “Watch this carefully, it’s not another

Democratic presidential candidate Joseph R. Biden on Wednesday formally embraced citizenship rights for 11 million illegal immigrants and a full erasure of all of President Trump’s get-tough border policies, as part of the party’s new unity platform. He would expand sanctuary locations, limit ICE’s ability to deport criminals in local jails, and reverse deportations for some military veterans already ousted because of criminal records.(Snip) The unity platform, developed by backers of Mr. Biden and one-time chief rival Sen. Bernard Sanders, would wipe clean every major immigration policy of the last three and a half years, replacing them with more legal immigration

The perennially losing NFL team that uses a slur as its nickname will have its merchandise scrubbed from Amazon’s website, the online shopping giant said Wednesday. Amazon joins other retailers including Walmart and Target that have moved to drop products bearing the Washington franchise’s mascot.
The team said last week it would review its long-controversial moniker, an offensive term for Native Americans, after it came under fresh fire amid nationwide protests against racism. “With the announcement from the Washington team and the NFL, we are removing products with the team’s name and logo from our stores,” Amazon emailed sellers.

The counterfeit $20 bill that cost George Floyd his life is now part of the murder case against the ex-Minneapolis cops charged in his death, according to court records made public Wednesday. The lawyer for accused former cop Thomas Lane said the crumpled bills found between the seats of Floyd’s SUV put the officer on alert from the start after Floyd repeatedly reached down and ignored 10 requests to show his hand. “From the initial interaction with Floyd and his vehicle, Lane noticed the driver and passenger in the vehicle digging underneath the seat, as if reaching for something,” defense attorney Earl Gray

Rosalie Weisfeld doesn’t skip elections–she just doesn’t. The 64-year-old lives in McAllen, near the Texas-Mexico border, and she votes in the contests that a lot of people sit out–races for school board, water district and local runoffs. In the more than 40 years she’s been registered to vote, Weisfeld only remembers missing one election.(Snip) More than a month later, Weisfeld got a letter back saying election officials had rejected her ballot. They examined the signature Weisfeld put on the ballot, compared it to one they had on file, and determined they weren’t from the same person.

Earl Gray Esq. with an awesome Elvis/Warhol coronamask? No one would believe it in a novel, yet here we are. Meanwhile, had George Floyd not knowingly tried to pass counterfeit bills (a federal felony), had not been high on a cocktail of illegal drugs, and not repeatedly refused to comply with the police, he'd be able to breathe today.
