Close to 300 New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers have filed for retirement over the last month amid riots against the police and as violent crime keeps surging.According to figures released to the New York Post, about 272 NYPD uniformed officers have filed for retirement since riots over the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd began in late May. At the same time last year, about 183 officers had filed for retirement, indicating a nearly 50 percent spike in retirements this year. One officer, who wanted to wait to retire until he hit 30 years with the NYPD, told the Post “It’s an all-out war on cops and

The next question is: How many current police officers have their homes up for sale? (and are looking for employment in a sensible place)

This is what you get when the Enemedia and the city government turn against police officers unfairly.
Enjoy what you have created.

This is the beginning of a vicious cycle - as riots rage, there will be fewer applicants for big-city police forces, older police will retire and the cities will have to lower their standards to fill the ranks. That means more marginally-qualified cops who might have been screened out in the past - the morally challenged, the hot heads, the power-drunk. Add the general demoralization because of feckless mayors, and the "Ferguson Effect," and you have a recipe for more violence in minority neighborhoods, and possibly more police brutality of suspects. Not good.

As much as I respect the police and worry about my family’s safety when the police avoid certain criminals because of their race, a major problem we all face are the incredibly generous pensions for police and fire. Cities and states cannot afford to have officers retire at 50 to 55 with pensions almost equal if not greater than their final salaries. Especially since the politicians who provide these retirement benefits in exchange for the police unions’ contributions and endorsements cannot afford to properly fund these lavish pensions.
So enjoy your brief retirements before taking new police jobs in low tax Florida. And know that your pensions mean fewer police and fire in the cities you helped bankrupt.

As they say, those retirements and also coming resignations from local police departments are just the tip of the iceberg, especially if the leftist and liberal Democrats pass their bill stripping qualified immunity from police officers doing their duties.
If that were to occur individual police officers would have to purchase very expensive liability insurance to cover every encounter and incident that they become involved in, including arresting and restraining criminals, as without qualified immunity anyone, even violent criminals, could find liberal lawyers who would file civil law suits against individual officers anytime after the officer or officers encounter their clients.
That would mean that police officers would have to hire defense lawyers anytime such a law suit was filed, resulting in bankrupting the officers, and their families, just to pay lawyers fees. Once that starts happening nobody qualified to do any other sort of work would continue to apply to become a police officer. The leftist and liberal Democrats seeking utmost political power to transform America into a socialist utopia could care less about police officers and their families, and instead back anarchist and leftist calls for crimes to be considered to be public health situations to be handled by social workers.
If that were to occur in the inner cities the law of the jungle would reign supreme, and would be a complete disaster for innocent people who reside there. Clearly the result of the November general election will be the decider as to which course the nation will take.

This article lacks two important elements to put the number retiring into perspective:
Historically, on average how many NYPD officers file for retirement each month?
How many police officers in total does the NYPD employ?
Without at least one of those numbers, we do not know if 300 NYPD officers filing for retirement indicates something of grave significance, or if it is just a blip.
I did a little research and was able to find out that the NYPD has about 36,000 officers, so this represents less than 1% of the force. On the other hand, back in January when the NY MTA was hiring 500 officers at a higher wage than the NYPD, there was concern about the thought that most of those would come from the NYPD.

I hate this for a number of reasons:
Not supporting the police should be punishable by prison time. I agree that there are some bad cops but the overwhelming majority are good (as is the case with most groups/organizations).
This is not fair to law-abiding citizens who are now targets of the infidels with their mayor and governors blessing.
Many of these people are starting to make moves to leave the state and plant roots in others. We don't need them coming to our states and bringing their damned liberal feelings with them. If you're going to stay a liberal then stay in your self made hell hole.

Public service payroll taxes can't fund public service costs, as everyone who's not a liberal or Paul Krugman knows. With private sector fleeing the city and taking the city's tax base with them, I have a feeling that the rank and file that are leaving are going to be renegotiating their retirements. Union officials won't be affected.

I don't blame them at all. In fact, I'm surprised it's only 300. Now that the Mayor has said he will cut the Police Budget by one BILLION dollars, I think there will be more and more leaving NY. If the Mayor doesn't have your Back, why put yourself in a position of shooting some Thug only to find out you will be charged with Murder, need a very expensive attorney and then maybe still spend the rest of your life in Jail. Hell No! I wouldn't work in NY for any amount of money! That goes for ALL of the Democrat inner cities!

People hesitate to say anything #8, but many even mid-size cities have no idea the goodies retired firefighters, police and city officials enjoy. Union officials financial benefits & details guarded like Fort Knox. My sibling is retired and she even said so. Retired at 51, all medical, dental, vision 100% covered for however long she lives. Our family history predicts she will live well into her 90’s. Not sustainable folks. There is a reason there are usually plenty of applicants for these jobs. When citizens do not pay attention, the administration and elected officials can take great advantage.

The whole DEFUND THE POLICE concept will, of course, backfire big time in so many different ways. Who will choose to open a business in a place that was looted and burned? No businesses - no tax base. No tax base - no essential services which includes police. So, the whole defund the police concept may become a given. They do not have to march for that cause anymore; mission accomplished. And all of those men and women who choose to retire and take their pensions will lessen the amount contributed to a pension fund which effects return, etc. etc. etc.

With the number of sworn officers at 38421, 300 amounts to 0.78% of the sworn officers. 300 may sound huge....but will get a ho hum out of new yorkers.

The Marxist long game here is to make the local police departments totally dysfunctional so they can usher in a national police force in every city. The hallmark of American law enforcement was it was local and accountable to local government and citizens. Communist countries always replace local LE with national police that have no ties to the community. Its easier to oppress strangers than neighbors.
TK is retired LAPD after 21 years. He does not get 100% medical or dental with monthly premiums on the health insurance deducted from the monthly check, and believe me it is no where near his once full salary, its about one third. He contributed 7% of his salary, off the top, towards his retirement. Because its a police retirement he was dinged by Social Security (earned in private employment before after PD) and receives $1,000/month less than his full benefit had he not been a policeman also. He was a beat cop in 77th (south LA) and was downtown for the Rodney King riots. He moved into traffic enforcement, specializing in accident reconstruction. He was on a special team that only handled the bad ones with 4+ fatalities. He was never home for New Year's Eve past 11pm. He also gave constant in-service training to officers as part of the driving safety program. For all this service for 21 years he gets the princely sum of $2,800 a month.
