JACKSON, WYO.—You can drive through the sprawling hills and snowy peaks of southeastern Idaho and cross the state line at Freedom, Wyoming — just north of Old Man Mountain. Turn left there, and take the two-lane Route 89 past horses, barns, ranch homes and log cabins until you meet a friend every fly fisherman in the country pines for: the Snake River. Follow that river east, winding through the 9,000-foot mountains until you find a valley that hearty mountain men of the 1820s, like David Jackson, called the hole. We know it as Jackson Hole, and to many, it’s the most beautiful place in the country.

Jackson is a weird place.
I've been going to Jackson most years since about 1972. It was an odd place in the 70s and has gotten a LOT odder since then. About 30-50% California-Hollwierd type folks layered over real live cowboys. Some good restaurants, but prices are really high, way too much California influence there, not much like the rest of Wyoming really. Went in to that bar once...looked around, and since I don't drink alcohol, left.
The pasture land south of town to the west is all big fancy homes from California folks, lots of movie folks have a home there, live part of the year. Their jets and demands for fancy airport service makes the FBO a pretty uptown operation these days, a lot fancier than the first time I flew in in my old 150.
The Merry Piglets was just starting back in the 70s, an slightly odd California hippie BBQ place. We sought it out several times over the years, and ate lunch there a couple of years ago again, still has that odd hippy ambience air dropped into cowboy country.
Jackson is a weird place.

As a young geologist, I visited Jackson, the Tetons, and Jenny Lake many times before shifting focus to oil & gas exploration. While Jackson is a fine place to visit when looking for iconic Western American scenery, I prefer the nearby Wind River Range, where the headwaters for three great rivers begin as a trickles of melted snow. South Pass City, at the southern end of the Wind River Range, is more historic than Jackson, and one can still see old wagon train ruts from the Oregon Trail heading through the South Pass, a natural crossing point of the Rocky Mountains for settlers headed for points in California and Oregon.

Camped there years ago, with a direct view of the Tetons out the tent flap.
Like a lot of really gorgeous places in America, infested with libtard vermin. Surprised stupid liberal women haven't been fighting to change the name of the mountain range.

Interesting timing of this article. We were supposed to go to the rodeo at Frontier Days in July, but it just got cancelled. I would’ve thought WY was tougher than that, but the above comments put things into perspective. Still trekking through the state in an RV this July, though. Should be an interesting adventure.

#2, I agree that the Wind Rivers are the best.
I have backpacked and climbed both sides of the Wind River Range from Green River Lakes down to The Cirque of Towers and every single trail in between. Summitted Gannett and Fremont, many others. More on the western slope than the eastern slope, as the south eastern part is Indian reservation. Some of the finest country on this continent, and going over it for almost 50 years, I still never tire of it, although my old knee kept me from much serious packing in the last 5-6 years, a couple of day trips were made. The new knee may let me go again this fall. I have a nephew that I have never shown it to who loves backpacking in the mountains. I should get him up on Squaretop.
